Baskin Robbins faces a familiar foe in China with the Dairy Queen chain on an aggressive growth track in the nation and seeing early success. The Dunkin' Brands (DNKN +2.1%) unit says it hopes to follow the path of Dairy Queen by using master franchisees and refining its brand to local tastes.

Restaurant blues: The consensus estimate of economists for consumer spending growth in February is for a 0.6% gain after the measure rose 0.2% in January but don't expect restaurants to report strong numbers for Q1. Inside tracking and guidance warnings from key companies indicate that the sector is feeling the pressure of higher payroll taxes. Major chains also face a tough period of comparable with last year's winter much milder on average in the U.S.

Coffee watch: Coffee futures (chart) continue to drift lower this year. Though some relief for bagged coffee sellers on wholesale costs is already built into estimates, the margin boost could be even better than expected. No retail chain has more outlets than 7-Eleven and the convenience store operator is still growing. The company says it added 5K stores in 2012 and will hit 50K stores by the end of Q1. It's a pace of expansion which should draw the notice of quick-stop rivals Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN -0.2%), Starbucks (SBUX -1.2%), and McDonald's (MCD -0.2%).

Heard during Dunkin' Brands' (DNKN -1.5%) presentation at the BofA Consumer & Retail Conference: 1) The NYC ban on soda would have had no impact on the company overall. 2) The company sees FY13 EPS $1.48-$1.51 vs. consensus $1.53 on revenue growth of 6% to 8%. 3) In the U.S., expect net unit development of 330 to 360 units and 450 to 500 remodels. 4) Look for a different restaurant mix, with 70% of new restaurants including a drive thru and ~2K outlets of the 24-hour variety. 5) On tech, a mobile app launched late last year improved speed of service and conversions on location-based offers. It's a smart play for many retailers to welcome Passbook integration, highlighted recently by Target when in noted during its earnings call (transcript) that Passbook compatibility helped boost mobile traffic and sales.

Margin pain on the horizon: Restaurants could get squeezed this year from a combination of higher commodity costs and frugal consumers, according to AlixPartners. Though traffic is forecast to rise 3%, the average ticket is expected to decline 4.7% with coupons, promotions, and discounts gaining favor. Chains that are expected to ride out the expected tough environment are those that can deliver healthy food fast. Chipotle (CMG -1.8%), privately-held Subway, and Panera (PNRA -1.5%) fit the bill.

Restaurant operators could take a hit from store closures this weekend with a major snowstorm expected to bring street traffic to a standstill over a wide area, according to Miller Tabak. Dunkin' Brands (DNKN +1.4%) could see a drop in traffic along with other East Coast-heavy chains such as Cheesecake Factory (CAKE -0.3%), Darden Restaurants (DRI -0.2%), and Panera Bread (PNRA +0.3%). Power outages lasting until next Valentine's Day when store traffic is expected to be high is a particular concern if widespread.

More on Dunkin' Brands (DNKN) Q4: Despite its increasing pace of adding stores, the company was still able to register a 3.2% gain in comparable store sales to outpace some of its peers. During the period, 149 new stores were added in the U.S. and 256 worldwide. A dividend increase to $0.19 per share is implemented. Targets for 2013 include new unit growth of 4.5% to 5% and an increase in revenue of 6% to 8%. 2013 EPS is forecast to fall in a range of $1.48 to $1.51. (PR)
