Among the Fission Energy assets being acquired by Denison (DNN +3.4%) is a 60% stake in the Waterbury Lake uranium project, part of a deposit attached to Rio Tinto’s (RIO -1.9%) Roughrider deposit - which Cantor Fitzgerald says "ties a neat bow on top of Denison for a potential takeout offer" from RIO. The analyst also considers Cameco (CCJ -1.2%) a potential source of a competing offer for Fission.

Denison Mines (DNN) will acquire a portfolio of uranium exploration projects from Fission Energy (FSSIF.PK), including Fission's 60% interest in the Waterbury Lake uranium project, as well as exploration interests in the eastern part of the Athabasca Basin, plus assets in Namibia, Quebec and Nunavut.

Denison Mines (DNN +2.9%) is upgraded to Outperform by Raymond James after yesterday's update which corroborates high-grade critical mass at the flagship Wheeler River project and consequently increased takeout potential. Also, DNN says its 2013 exploration plans are focused on the Athabasca Basin with 44K meters of drilling planned, a 25% Y/Y increase.

Denison Mining (DNN) +7.7% premarket after announcing significant increases in mineral resource estimates for its high grade Phoenix A and Phoenix B uranium deposits on its Wheeler River project in Saskatchewan. The total indicated mineral resource contains ~52.3M lbs. U3O8 based on ~152K metric tons of mineralization at an average grade of 15.6% U3O8.

Japan's cabinet backtracks on plans to phase out nuclear power by 2040, deciding to take the proposals "into consideration" when deciding energy policy rather than giving them formal approval. The plans have met strong opposition from business, which fears increased electricity bills and an unstable electricity supply.

Japan's government says it will phase out nuclear power by the 2030s, marking a major policy shift and the first formal decision to retreat from atomic energy since the Fukushima disaster 18 months ago. Japan aims to triple the share of renewable power to 30% of its energy mix, but it is sure to remain a top importer of oil, coal and gas for the foreseeable future.

BHP's delay to the massive expansion of its Olympic Dam mine could have an outsized impact on the uranium market, which is small and concentrated. Though the immediate impact likely will not be significant, "as higher cost projects will be needed to fill the deficit, the uranium price is likely to increase in the intervening years,” BMO says.
