Solar Grade: A Silicon Revolution [view article]
"then there is Metallurgical Grade [MG] used by the steel and metals industry as an alloying material. MG (98-99% pure) is made from relatively crude materials"So far, I know only CSIQ producing Solar PV using UMG material which is much cheaper than the regular silicon. Reply

In additional to decreased cost of silicon, I also expect that watts/gram of poly will probably double in 5 years from todays. This will be due to two key things: (1) increasing efficiency from about 16% today to mid-20's in 5 years (SPWR should be rolling out 23% panels next year), and (2) thinner wafers.
So even if poly prices did not change, cost of poly per watt will decrease substantially over the next few years. Factor in a drop in poly costs, and overall panel prices are well on their way to costing half as much as they do now within a few years.

Great article. Eagerly look forward to your next article.Like mistermaumau I see this rather as validating the silicon solar panel technology, not really a traditional paradigm shift as it is not a new technology replacing another. Makes the outlook for FSLR look very bleak, so why do they still get these high ratings.
Also my comment on the oil prices. The "falling" oil price (very relative) is seen as tempering demand for panels, but all I really see is shipping costs for panels from China coming down...

For those Amazon fans (AMZN) I would be very carefull. I would check out the latest tricks that are happening with AMZN and GE-Money. It may not be Amazon's fault but it certainly will cost amazon some revenue and income. I have since shorted Amazon. If you look at a long history of AMZN stock. It looks like it hit a top resistance and is heading down.Check out:

Minor point - 2 to the 10th is 1024, so doubling for 10 years would be a factor of 1000; and 2 to 20th is 1 billion odd.Have you seen guntherportfolio.blogs.../ where he shows videos from InterSolar presentations last week in San Fran where they can keep up with Silicon (and its relatives) demand, which also keeps growing. They say the supply pinch is mostly inventory and logistics issues. And they can increase supply much more, as needed. Reply

Okie and anon: I think the reference to 430% is to a 20-year return not a ten year return, which comes out on my HP12c as about 8.7% annually... ReplyWhy I'm Committed to the UltraShort Financials ETF [view article]
Ames Tiedeman wrote: "SKF is a now a buy or near a buy. The financial mess is not over." The question is not whether the financial mess is over yet. The question is, will it be worse than people expect it to be. People already expect it to be pretty bad. The expectations are already in the stock prices. The article was posted the morning after SKF made its all-time high above 211. Now it's trading 3 days later at 131. Have to have a strong stomach to ride it down $80 a share. Next time I might use this author's article as a contrarian signal :) ReplySolar Grade: A Silicon Revolution [view article]
The way I see it this is bad news for FSLR and some as it will destroy the advantage they currently have over classical solars, do you agree? ReplySolar Grade: A Silicon Revolution [view article]
You should have mentioned ARISE TECHNOLOGIE'S (APV - TSX) proprietary technology for producing 7N silicon around 40% less expensive than Siemens' !!! Arise got it's technology validated ( got already 2 contracts for 400 MT ) and will start production in the beginning of the 2009 from its pilot plant in Waterloo, Ontario. This has been helpful. I look forward to more. If possible, I would like to hear more about your reservations about ETFs. Does your reasoning apply to regular mutual funds in the solar sector? Thanks. ReplyThis Week's Key Earnings Reports [view article]
Silly to list WB as more closely watched than BAC or POT... ReplyThis Week's Key Earnings Reports [view article]
My money is on BAC over Apple. Apple will have record earnings and its stock will fall 20%. BAC will lose only $5B, thats better than $5.5B expected, so a pop of 30% is in order! Welcome to Wallstreet. Home of the crooked! ReplySolar Grade: A Silicon Revolution [view article]
Indeed, a lucid article if not exceptional blog post, but mostly old news to me. And yes, Steve Amendola is a genius. How do you get in touch with seeking alpha authors privately? Reply
