    General Discussion on DRYS
WILL DRYS RECOVER NEXT or FOLLOWING WEEKS?

Based on recent meetings (disclosure by DRYS of their future prospects) and fleet expansion, DRYS should do much better. Still I do not understand why DRYS loss significant value in last ten days or so. This quarter their earning will be way up than expected. I know that DRYS - most of their fleets are under fixed rate contract - therefore oil concern and current economy condition should not affect the stock value at least in foreseeing future. Unfortunately, that's not the case based on what happened in the last few weeks where stock value got hammered. This is true with entire shipping industry as all the indexes are showing down trend for the last one month or so. I would appreciate if anyone who can comment on DRYS particularly emphasizing the prospects of stocks in particular and shipping industry in general - going up or down until the day of their earning announcement (2nd quarter) on August 21st(?).

David, In late January you liked VSH. Today it is much cheaper, but every quarter they seem to take a new non-recurring charge that turns out to be anything but non-recurring.The stock was moving up from 8.5 to 10.5 and now after a couple of terrible weeks, its back under 9 again. It looks cheap to me, but I don't see any catalyst on the horizon for it to go up. What are your thoughts today on VSH? Reply

Thanks for the list. I a always looking for starting points unique from my own. I will run through on my P & F charts, then start my fundamental analysis. A few on my watchlist are DHR, GPC, TECH, SYY and VFC. For growth, i am watching TSCO and BWLD. Reply

Why NM David? I know it's highly leveraged, but I think with patience it will shine. My one concern is how the relationship will work between NM and NMP, how the assets will shift and of course, the distribution of profits. That being said, I'm long NM and just think that in this market investors have to be more patient with their speculative holdings. Maybe I'm just willing to hold on longer than you are. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Reply

Why don't you just list every stock in the world? There would probably be some good bets in there some where. Reply

David...add ANAT to the list. It is the sister company of NWLIA - both controlled by the Moody Family. Also, KCLI is another unappreciated insurer trading below book. Disclosure - I am long both. Reply

Enter your comment hereAs the market continues to go down, shipping, which used to be a safe haven, now looks like it may be subject to a downward trend. Here's a pretty good podcast that discusses what to during this down market and what's going on with coal, steel, bulk shipping, and agriculture.

the main idea is that individual investors dont have to act like institutional investors and this market and may be better holding cash than trying to beat the market.

To quote a term, I think she is spot on. There is already backlog in the shipyards and then drydocking for some co's carriers. As emerging markets are still vying for large shares of iron ore and coal not to mention grains and fertilizers I concur with the predictions. Those ships within companies that are in service will be kept busy. Lest we forget oil double hull tankers and then conversion rigs. Q4 looks promising. I agree that 09 looks cloudy but not bleak.
