DTV vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
DIRECTV, which we also refer to as the company, we or us, is a leading provider of digital television entertainment in the United States and Latin America. We operate two direct-to-home, or DTH, operating segments: DIRECTV U.S. and DIRECTV Latin America, which are differentiated by their... More

- Wednesday, March 20, 10:03 AM A survey conducted by Deloitte Touche indicates a lower percentage of the population considered cutting the chord to pay-TV services in 2012 than 2011. Though the wording of the question leads AllThingsD to speculate that at least some of the respondents answered yes to cutting premium-TV services such as HBO (TWX) instead of traditional cable/satellite (DTV, DISH, CMCSA, TWC, CHTR, CVC) options, the reported sharp drop in the pace of cord-cutting is still something to watch. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, March 18, 8:59 AM A merger between DirecTv (DTV) and Dish Network (DISH) looks more likely now with Vivendi's Brazilian unit out of the picture, according to Macquarie. The investment firm thinks a DTV-DISH marriage would bring in both near- and long-term synergies for the combined company. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 10:30 AM Shares of DirecTV (DTV +6%) race higher as investors breathe a sigh of relief that the company won't be buying Vivendi's Brazilian unit. The decision is viewed by some as another sign that management is quite shareholder-friendly. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 6:42 PM DirecTV (DTV) is no longer in the running to buy Vivendi's (VIVHY.PK) Brazilian phone/Internet services unit, a spokesman states in an interview. The company was reportedly bidding with a slew of P-E firms for the business, which would have complemented its Latin American satellite TV ops. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 6, 1:17 PM Cable companies (CMCSA, CHTR, TWC, CVC) increasingly use their inherent advantage with two-way networks to nab customers from satellite players (DTV, DISH) stuck with a one-way network. When push comes to shove, DirecTV and Dish just can't offer customers the same breadth of video-on-demand content than cable rivals. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 26, 2:36 PM More on the pay TV landscape (previous): Any change away from the model of forcing consumers to buy TV packages with hundreds of channels in favor of picking their options a la carte could help Dish Network (DISH +0.7%) and DirecTV (DTV -0.2%) - while pinching carriage fees for providers such as Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI -0.7%), AMC Networks (AMCX -4.3%) and even Disney (DIS +0.6%) with ESPN a major profit driver for the media giant. Though high-profile blackouts have hurt both sides, analysts think its the media companies that are starting to lose the PR battle with consumers. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 19, 12:56 PM More cable transmission fee wars: DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) admonishes Sinclair Broadcasting (SBGI -2%) for threatening its subscribers over the potential to see lost programming if the companies don' get a deal worked out before February 28. Analysts think Sinclair has more to lose if a new deal doesn't come to pass before the deadline. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, February 15, 6:51 AM ISI Group lowers its rating on DirecTV (DTV) to Neutral and reduces its price target on shares to $55. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 14, 3:10 PM Heard during DirecTV's (DTV -3.4%) earnings call: 1) The company will begin charging existing subscribers a $3 fee for regional sports networks to match what new subscribers already pay. 2) Execs say programming expenses are forecast to rise 8% in FY13. 3) Housing growth will eventually be an upside driver for the company - but is factored in "cautiously" to subscriber growth estimates for now. 4) Latin America is still considered a great place for the company to look for internal rates of return and DirecTV isn't giving up in Venezuela despite the wild currency swings. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 14, 9:09 AM Shares of DirectTV (DTV) move up 2.9% premarket following the company's healthy earnings beat. Proving where the focus of the business growth is right now, DirecTV added over 658K subscribers in Latin America compared to the 103K of net adds in the U.S. What to watch: With stable subscriber growth still in place, if the firm can lock in subscribers to advanced services such as DVR, HD, and on-demand video - margins can improve. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 7:46 AM More on DirecTV's (DTV) Q4: Latin America is a growth driver again, with revenues up 23% to $6B on margins higher than the U.S. market. The monthly churn rate dropped 13 bps Y/Y to 1.43% in the U.S. as cumulative subscribers increased 1%. In Q1, DirecTV will take a $160M charge to account for the devaluation of the Venezuelan currency. The company approves a new $4B stock repurchase program. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, February 14, 7:33 AM DirecTV (DTV): Q4 EPS of $1.55 beats by $0.42. Revenue of $8.05B (+8% Y/Y) beats by $0.02B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Thursday, January 31, 5:07 AM KKR (KKR), JPMorgan's (JPM) Gavea Investimentos and Apax Partners are among those reportedly joining up to bid for Vivendi's GVT phone unit in Brazil, putting them in competition with DirecTV (DTV). The group may offer up to €5B, although that's well below Vivendi's asking price of €8B. DirecTV could be more willing to make a proposal that's closer to Vivendi's figure, due to the synergies the deal would bring. Comment! [M&A, Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, January 14, 10:42 AM A major player such as AT&T or DirecTV (DTV +0.8%) might make a run at acquiring Dish Network (DISH -0.7%), according to industry consultant Tim Farrar. The line of reasoning is that with Dish pursuing its own bid for Clearwire, a deal sooner rather than later makes sense. Last week, DirecTV CEO Mike White stoked the DTV-DISH merger fire by saying a tie-up would yield "strategic merit" and "synergies." 2 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
