DTV vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
DIRECTV, which we also refer to as the company, we or us, is a leading provider of digital television entertainment in the United States and Latin America. We operate two direct-to-home, or DTH, operating segments: DIRECTV U.S. and DIRECTV Latin America, which are differentiated by their... More

- Monday, October 29, 2012, 10:40 AM DirecTV (DTV) launches a new channel with dedicated 24/7 coverage on Hurricane Sandy. The company has drawn praise in the past for its ability to adjust programming on-the-fly to breaking stories. The bigger issue: While keeping up with rivals with programming in the U.S. is necessary to maintain market share, in high-growth Latin America the company lacks high-tech cable competition and is looking at proprietary channels as a revenue driver. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 2:07 PM Dish Network (DISH +0.5%) and DirecTV (DTV +0.6%) should be forced to pay the same fees that cable operators kick in to support the FCC, according to the American Cable Association. The cable industry pays $0.95 per subscriber to support regulation in the sector. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, October 15, 2012, 1:49 PM Cable and satellite stocks show gains after Softbank's deal to purchase Sprint shines a spotlight on potential M&A activity in the sector. Analysts think the field of players could narrow rather quickly if a few more regulatory hurdles can be cleared. Movers: Dish Network (DISH +4.1%), DirecTV (DTV +1.1%), Time Warner Cable (TWC +1.7%). Comment! [Consumer]
- Sunday, October 7, 2012, 5:09 AM Time Warner Cable (TWC), Comcast (CMCSA) and other cable TV operators may withhold non-sports programming from their rivals after the FCC allowed program-sharing requirements to expire on Friday. The change is a blow to the likes of Dish (DISH), DirecTV (DTV), Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T), which had wanted the rule to continue. (see also) 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Saturday, October 6, 2012, 8:45 AM EchoStar (SATS) is reportedly in talks with Brazilian companies to launch a JV satellite-TV service in Brazil. The move would expand Dish Network's (DISH and EchoStar are controlled by Charlie Ergen) minimal exposure to fast-growing Latin America, and be a threat to DirecTV (DTV) which is counting on the region to fuel its own growth. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, October 5, 2012, 12:34 PM The FCC is expected to ease rules mandating cable providers such as Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) offer rivals access to regional sports networks they own. Instead of requiring cable providers to provide access in the event satellite links are used to get the content onto cable networks, the FCC's chairman will handle enforcement on a case-by-case basis. The policy shift could be a negative for DISH, DTV, T, and VZ. (previous) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 7:05 PM Dish Network (DISH) is planning to launch a U.S. satellite broadband service on Monday with relatively aggressive pricing. The service, which will be available nationwide but aimed at rural areas with poor broadband availability, will cost TV subscribers between $40-$70/month and deliver speeds of 5-10 Mbps, but will come with data caps. Dish currently offers costlier services in partnership with ViaSat (VSAT). Rival DirecTV (DTV) says it plans to offer nationwide broadband in Q1. 7 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 9:15 AM DirecTV (DTV) CEO Michael White has the floor at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference as he cautiously notes the delicate balance the company faces with pricing and promotion in a "tough" consumer environment. He says DirecTV expects a slightly elevated churn in Q3, but will still see a net add of subscribers. A rigorous approach to content costs and digital rights looks like it will be the norm, which reading between the lines could lead to stalemates with networks. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 3:00 PM DirecTV (DTV -1.3%) is one of a number of companies considering a bid for Vivendi's (VIVHY.PK) Brazilian phone operator GVT. The deadline for a first round of bids hasn’t been set, but apparently Vivendi is preparing a list of potential suitors that will be given access to GVT’s financial data. Comment! - Thursday, August 9, 2012, 9:51 AM Cord-cutting might have picked up a bit in Q2, according to data industry. Though the net loss of 400K customers was affected partially by a seasonal trend of college students cutting their service, analysts dissecting the sector still see a slow downward trend as more streaming options proliferate. Cable/satellite/telco players: CMCSA, TWC, CHTR, CVC, DISH, DTV, T, VZ. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 7:06 AM The recent net subscriber losses reported at pay TV operators such as Comcast (CMCSA), DirecTV (DTV), Dish Network (DISH), and Time Warner (TWX) doesn't overly concern Bernstein Research's Craig Moffett. The analyst says seasonality - not Netflix - is behind the trend in recent years of a summer dropoff, influenced in part by colleges cutting the cord between June and September. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 2:05 PM How alarming is DirecTV's (DTV -1.9%) first-ever decline in U.S. subscribers? The drop of 52K subscribers wasn't gigantic in the context of the 19.91M customers it still retained, but with streaming options continuing to draw interest it is of note that the company is increasingly relying on Latin America to hammer out results. 9 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 8:34 AM More on DirecTV (DTV): Net subscribers declined by 52K due to lower gross subscriber additions that were only partially offset by a reduction in the average monthly churn rate. Results in Latin America strong, with 645K net additions and 20% revenue growth. Free cash flow $527M, compared to $320M a year ago. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Consumer]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 8:22 AM DirecTV Group (DTV): Q2 EPS of $1.09 misses by $0.04. Revenue of $7.22B (+9.5% Y/Y) in-line. Shares -2.4% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]
