DTV vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
DIRECTV, which we also refer to as the company, we or us, is a leading provider of digital television entertainment in the United States and Latin America. We operate two direct-to-home, or DTH, operating segments: DIRECTV U.S. and DIRECTV Latin America, which are differentiated by their... More

- Friday, June 15, 2012, 7:50 AM DirecTV (DTV) will try its hand at original programming with new cop show Rouge, as it keeps a focus on margins that keep shrinking. The company already offers exclusive content for shows such as Damages and Friday Night Lights that were originally broadcast on traditional networks. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 4:05 PM Culling through the list of applications for new Internet domain suffixes reveals that Dish Network (DISH) applied for the right to use the web addresses .direct and .dtv. Though the move by Dish could be purely defensive in order to protect future products, it's also interesting to note that DirecTV (DTV) doesn't plan to challenge the applications. Could a merger between the two digital TV providers be in the works? 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 1:55 PM DirecTV (DTV +0.7%) will be one of the bidders in an auction in Brazil for radio spectrum that can be used to incorporate its 4G wireless broadband services, according to reports. If it lands the license, highly-populated Sao Paulo and Rio de Janiero can be added to the firm's service coverage. Other bidders: AMX, TSU, TEF. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 6:12 PM DirecTV's (DTV) Latin American investments make it a growth story in spite of its dependence on a saturated U.S. market, says Bernstein's Craig Moffett. The pay-TV penetration rate is just 22% in Brazil, 39% in Mexico, and 38% in the other Latin markets DirecTV operates in, Moffett points out. With the company's subsidiaries in the region having market shares that range from 21% to 32%, he thinks Latin America will account for 30% of DirecTV's revenue by 2015. (also) Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:58 PM The FCC is exploring whether online video sites such as Hulu and YouTube (GOOG) should be governed by the same rules as traditional pay-TV providers. Any move in this direction could have huge implications, potentially giving video sites the right to carry channels content owners have been unwilling to license (and thus representing major new competition for traditional providers), while also requiring them to carry less popular content. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, May 21, 2012, 1:00 PM Barclays reiterates an Overweight rating on DirecTV (DTV +1.4%) to go along with its price target of $56 as analysts with the firm keep the faith that the digital TV giant still has three pillars to stand on - namely robust Latin American revenue, healthy U.S. cash flow, and aggressive capital returns. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 2:21 PM Jana Partners discloses in a SEC filing that it holds 158K shares in DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) - making it the third largest holding for the hedge fund company. While Jana is known for taking an activist role in the companies in which it invests, the stake in DTV is too small to give it a great deal of clout. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 2:02 PM Though Nielsen recently argued cord-cutting is for real, using 2011 subscriber losses as proof, Bernstein's Craig Moffett points to Q1 data as evidence the phenomenon is no big deal. Major U.S. pay-TV providers added 422K subs in Q1, Moffett notes, as gains of 375K and 185K for telco and satellite providers, respectively, more than offset a 137K drop in cable subs. Also, cable's decline was smaller than Q4's 316K. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 7:58 AM More on DirecTV Group's (DTV) Q1: Adds 81K new subscribers. Churn rate drops 6 bp to 1.44%. DirecTV Latin America revenue +33.3% Y/Y to $1.485B. Operating profit margin increased 3 bps to 18.6%. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 7:42 AM DirecTV Group (DTV): Q1 EPS of $1.07 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $7.05B (+11.6% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]

- Friday, May 4, 2012, 6:55 PM Cord-cutting is a real phenomenon, says Nielsen, even if the figures aren't huge. The number of U.S. homes subscribing to a pay-TV service fell by an estimated 1.5M in 2011, as subscriber gains of 1.1M and 280K from telco and satellite providers, respectively, failed to offset the loss of 2.9M cable subs. Nielsen also claims the amount of time U.S. consumers spent on game consoles rose 30% Y/Y in spite of mobile/social competition - Xbox (MSFT) media usage is likely playing a big role. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, April 5, 2012, 4:41 AM DirecTV (DTV) reaches an agreement to resume carrying Tribune (TRBCQ.PK) TV stations. "It's unfortunate that Tribune was willing to hold our customers hostage in an attempt to extract excessive rates, but in the end we reached a fair deal at market rates similar to what we originally agreed to on March 29." Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 11:24 AM Over 1M U.S. cable subscribers cut the cord in 2011, estimates Convergence Consulting. It also thinks U.S. pay-TV providers only had a net gain of 112K subs last year - far less than the 380K estimated by Leichtman Research, which believes a 1.6M drop in cable subs was offset by satellite and telco increases. From 2000-2009, pay-TV providers added an average of 2M subscribers/year. (previously) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, April 2, 2012, 4:07 PM Angry over Tribune's decision to yank its programming over a fee dispute, DirecTV (DTV +1.2%) has filed a complaint with the FCC seeking a ruling over Tribune's alleged failure to "negotiate in good faith." DirecTV is also questioning whether Tribune's broadcast licenses were prematurely transferred to its financial industry creditors, whose overruling of a deal with Tribune's management is derided as "another case of runaway Wall Street greed." 1 Comment [Tech]
