DTV vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
DIRECTV, which we also refer to as the company, we or us, is a leading provider of digital television entertainment in the United States and Latin America. We operate two direct-to-home, or DTH, operating segments: DIRECTV U.S. and DIRECTV Latin America, which are differentiated by their... More

- Thursday, June 13, 12:02 PM A deal which will see DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) purchase Hulu (CMCSA, DIS, NWS) by the end of the month is imminent, sources tell PandoDaily. The acquisition would fill a large void in DirecTV's offerings which would be difficult to build from ground up and also allow it to play some defense against Hulu falling into a rival's hands. 3 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 12, 1:47 PM Executives with cable companies (CHTR, CMCSA, TWC, DISH, DTV) made it crystal clear during yesterday's National Cable & Telecommunications Association meeting that they will go to great lengths to protect original content. The group says it has contracts in place which will provide incentives for media outlets to limit content for online pay-TV services. What to watch: A report from BTIG makes the case the FTC needs to investigate the anti-competitive practice. If the agency does get involved, it could open up the web TV industry for the likes of Apple, Intel, and Google. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, June 12, 9:51 AM The number of households with pay-TV is forecast to rise to 1B homes globally by 2018 led by growth in China and India, according to Digital TV Research. Though it's tricky separating the potential winners from losers in the sector (DTV, DISH, TWX, NFLX), the PowerShares Dynamic Media ETF (PBS) is something of a catch-all for the trend toward growth in the media industry. Top holdings: Dish 5.13%; Disney 5.11%; Google 5.10%; DirecTV 5.07%. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, June 6, 1:32 PM Unanswered questions about the NFL's deal with Verizon: 1) Are CBS (CBS -0.9%) and Fox (NWS -0.8%) getting a free ride out of the arrangement between the NFL and Verizon which will see games steamed live on mobile phones or will it cut into the benefits of their own deal to stream games on devices other than TVs and smartphones? 2) If the deal allows games to be viewed on phones, but not tablets, where will the line be drawn as the two wireless products increasingly resemble each other? 3) Will Verizon (VZ +2.3%) recoup its investment over the long-term as new subscribers stay on board or will the fees subscribers pay for access to the NFL cover the cost? 4) Is DirecTV (DTV +0.2%) the odd man out as its NFL Sunday Ticket package begins to look outdated? 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 8:59 AM DirecTV (DTV) buys LifeShield Home Security in what looks like a bid by the company to enter the home security business. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. DTV -0.9% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Sunday, June 2, 2:53 AM Satellite operator DirecTV (DTV) and two other unidentified suitors have reportedly bid over $1B each to acquire Hulu. The owners of the online video service, which are News Corp (NWS), Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA), have received seven offers for the company, and intend to cut the shortlist down over the next few weeks. Previous reports have said that other bidders include Yahoo (YHOO), KKR (KKR) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). 5 Comments [Consumer, M&A, Top Stories]
- Thursday, May 30, 3:14 PM The next big thing in TV might be called Fan TV. BTIG Research is raving about the IP-based set-top box from two-year old startup Fanhattan which is trying to solve the riddle of how to enable consumers to watch TV and movie content across devices. If video distribution partners sign up, the device just might be the Holy Grail of providing one-stop content access. The big picture: According to BTIG, the technology could give an edge to cable companies (CHTR, CVC, TWC, CMCSA) over satellite players (DISH, DTV). (Fan TV demo) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 24, 1:40 PM Add KKR and Silver Lake Management to the list of bidders for Hulu (CMCSA, DIS, NWS), according to Bloomberg. Earlier reports indicated Time Warner Cable (TWC -0.8%), Guggenheim Digital, and DirecTV (DTV -0.6%) are in the hunt. What to watch: Some analysts think Hulu could evolve into a payment authentication system for the cable industry, while others bet that a single media/tech company will snap up the firm to create a unique position for itself in video - either as a premium streaming service or an ad-supported content monster. Either way Netflix (NFLX -0.5%) is watching. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, May 22, 1:03 PM The Xbox One is far from the future of television unless cable providers (CVC, CMCSA, CHTR, TWC) can work with Microsoft to create a superior video product that captures market share from satellite players (DISH, DTV), according to BTIG's Rich Greenfield. Under the status quo, the Xbox One only offers a clunky way to control the TVs and DVRS of consumers without a complex home configuration. Greenfield says an edge exists for the cable industry, as long as it works quick before the Apple Television launch or an improved Google TV product is debuted. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, May 17, 4:11 PM DirecTV (DTV) has joined the ranks of companies weighing a bid for Hulu (DIS, NWS, CMCSA), with an eye towards expanding its arsenal of TV Everywhere content, the WSJ reports. The scoop shortly follows a report Time Warner Cable and other MSOs are talking about a possible bid. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:50 AM Seth Klarman added two new positions to Baupost in Q1, with Elan (ELN) now 3.5% of his portfolio and DirecTV (DTV) 0.38%. He added to already major positions in BP, AIG, ROVI, and IDIX, and completely sold out of GNW, and ANV. 1 Comment
- Monday, May 13, 8:20 AM DirecTV (DTV) plans to float bonds in euros for the first time as the widening yield spread between euro-denominated corporate bonds and dollar notes continues to attract the attention of U.S. companies. Ford, Microsoft, and AT&T are just a few of the large firms raising funds by taking advantage of rock-bottom euro corporate bond rates. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 10, 2:18 PM The Television Consumer Freedom Act backlash: 1) The bill introduced by Sen. John McCain is getting lots of attention from the cable industry, uniting big cable giants such as Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) with smaller regional cable companies. 2) Beyond just attempting to force a la carte cable pricing, the legislation also seeks to bar broadcasters from converting to cable networks to avoid tech upstarts like Aereo. 3) The icing on the cake might be what McCain wants to do with sports. The bill calls for banning sports blackouts (bad for DirecTV's (DTV) Sunday Ticket?) and would create havoc with new "super" conferences that are banking on big cable revenue for bundled access (bad for Time Warner (TWX) and New Corp (NWS)?) 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 8, 7:53 AM Sports were a big topic of conversation during the DirecTV's (DTV) earnings call. Renewing the contract with the NFL for the firm's NFL Sunday Ticket programming and striking a carriage deal for the new Time Warner Cable L.A. Dodgers network look intriguing, but could be too costly either now or in the future. CEO Mike White on sports programming costs: "Just because you ask for triple the fees doesn’t mean you’ll receive triple the fees." (transcript) Comment! [Consumer]

Wow, Buffett is also buying stakes in Intel (INTC) and DirectTV (DTV). Guess this is a sign to buy tech. http://yhoo.it/v8hlRh;_ylt=Au8IVVmRB3VMFmPCLiy0aWWiuYdG;_ylu=X3oDMTQzb3E0cWwzBG1pdANGaW5hbmNlIEZQIEp1bWJvdHJvbiBMaXRlBHBrZwM2YzMwYmViMC0xNGMxLTNiYWMtYTY3ZC05OTUxZTU2MGE1NTAEcG9zAzEEc2VjA2p1bWJvdHJvbgR2ZXIDZTU5ZTgwNjAtMGYxNy0xMWUxLWJlZjgtNjc2MzNiYTkxZmFm;_ylg=X3oDMTFpNzk0NjhtBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANob21lBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25z;_ylv=3 - View all 2 replies
