Monday, June 10, 10:57 AM Education stocks (CECO, STRA, APEI, LINC, DV) are ripping higher again, led by Apollo Group (APOL +5.9%) and Corinithian Colleges (COCO +6.8%). Traders are buzzing about technical indicators in the sector, but SA contributor David Waldron is looking down the road to see a "shakeout" in the education market that could lead to a resumption of consistent growth and profits even with regulation higher. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
Wednesday, June 5, 11:09 AM The for-profit education sector has been beaten up too much by investors and analysts, reasons SA contributor Daniel Philip. He thinks after student loan balances begin to decrease, the industry will benefit from the higher rate of high school graduates and the improved cost structures at major providers. The sector (APEI, APOL, CECO, COCO, STRA, LINC, LOPE, BPI, DV, CPLA, EDMC, NAUH) should rally again eventually, although ITT Educational Services (ESI +11%) might be getting a nice little head start. 2 Comments [Consumer]
Thursday, May 23, 1:14 PM Overdue student loans reached an all-time high of 11% during Q3 of last year, according to the DOE. The news comes just as the House approved a Republican-led proposal to allow interest rates on student loans to float. Still up for debate is whether or not a two-year extension of the 3.4% rate for subsidized Stafford loans will be legislated. Monday, May 20, 4:46 PM DeVry's (DV) Harold T. Shapiro, Ph.D., a board member since 2001 and chairman since 2008, has notified DeVry that he at tdoesn't intend to stand for re-electionhe next annual meeting of shareholders on November 6. The board doesn't plan to immediately fill the vacancy, therefore the board's size will be reduced from 12 to 11 directors following the meeting. Additionally, it appoints Connie Curran, Ed.D. to replace Dr. Shapiro as board chair effective on that day, and at which time Dr. Shapiro will be named director emeritus. Comment! [Consumer]

CEO Daniel Hamburger blamed the slump on low cyclical demand occasioned by a weak economy, tepid job growth, and questions about the value of a college education. Average time from student inquiry to application rose to 50 days from 20. When asked by Deutsche's Adrienne Colby how high school enrollment trends were shaping up for July and September, Hamburger said: "Unfortunately, [they are] a little bit soft for us."
