    With BP (BP +0.5%) meeting "technical" requirements to work off Brazil's coast, approval may come this month for its $3.2B purchase of Devon Energy's (DVN +0.2%) assets there, says a top lawyer at the country's oil regulator. Devon has been selling off international and offshore assets to focus production.

    The smart way to invest in natural gas is not by investing in a natural gas company, Dee Gill writes, but rather with oil giant Exxon Mobil (XOM). While some of the top nat gas firms have too much debt or look just plain expensive, XOM is now the biggest U.S. nat gas producer, debt levels and shareholder returns are attractive, and dividend yields are at least double those of other nat gas producers.

    The prospect of slower growth in China trumped Libyan supply disruptions, as energy stocks of all stripes were clobbered today. Among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500: BTU -5.8%, MEE -5.4%, VLO -5%, CNX -4.4%, CHK -4.3%, DVN -4%, NBL -4%. The top five by market cap: XOM -3.6%, RDS.A -2.3%, CVX -3%, BP -3.7%, COP -3.7%.

    In light of the Gulf of Mexico spill, Brazilian regulators are taking another look at BP's (BP) $7B deal with Devon Energy (DVN) to buy Brazilian assets, and plan to fly to BP's Houston headquarters next week to discuss the matter. BP says the deal is moving ahead.

    Shell's (RDS.A) acquisition of East Resources is the second-biggest oil and gas deal this year, after BP's (BP) acquisition of deepwater assets from Devon Energy (DVN) for $7B in March. Last December, ExxonMobil (XOM) agreed to buy XTO Energy (XTO), the No. 1 U.S. natural gas producer, for $31B.
