- Thursday, March 14, 6:01 AM Italy's ENI (E +1.9% in Milan) has agreed to sell a 28.6% stake in Eni East Africa to China National Petroleum Corp. for $4.21B. The deal will enable CNPC to indirectly acquire a 20% holding in the Area 4 natural gas field in Mozambique, after which Eni East Africa will retain a 50% stake in the field. (PR) 1 Comment [Energy, M&A, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, March 13, 3:16 PM Eni (E) confirms it has been approached by potential buyers for part of its 70% share in a Mozambique gas project that is the biggest discovery in its history. China National Petroleum reportedly is in talks with Eni for a stake in the project valued at as much as $4B. (also) Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 8:11 AM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) says it's in talks with potential customers in Japan to buy supplies from a joint liquefied natural gas plant in Mozambique it's planning with Eni (E). "We’re hopeful that the policy uncertainty around nuclear power and U.S. exports does not cause [the Japanese] to miss out," an APC exec says. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 8, 10:36 AM Eni (E -0.9%) is not considering a plan put forward by activist investor Knight Vinke to spin off 43%-owned oil services unit Saipem (SAPMY.PK), chairman Giuseppe Recchi says. In recent months, Saipem has issued a shock profit warning and news of an investigation into alleged corruption in Algeria revolving around a series of contracts. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 6, 10:41 AM China National Petroleum (PTR +1%) reportedly is in talks with Eni (E +1%) for a 20% stake in gas assets in Mozambique valued at as much as $4B. Eni has a 50% stake in Mozambique’s Area 4, where it has discovered ~75T cu. ft. of natural gas so far, the biggest find in the company’s history. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 5, 10:32 AM Anadarko (APC +3.2%) says it will sell a 12.75% interest in the Heidelberg deepwater oil project in the Gulf of Mexico to an undisclosed party for $860M to ensure funding until production starts in 2016. APC will continue to operate the project with a 31.5% interest; XOM, APA, E and STO own the remaining stake in the field, estimated to hold up to 400M barrels of recoverable resources. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 7:25 AM Eni (E) faces an additional €90.75M fine for its role in a 2006 synthetic rubber cartel case. Eni had been penalized €272.5M years ago, but had won a court case reversing part of the fine having to do with being a repeat defender. The EU says it has now overcome those objections. Shares -1.1% premarket (Italy -2%). 1 Comment [Energy]
- Tuesday, February 26, 7:36 AM The pain in Italy today - FTSE MIB - off 4.6% - is mainly being felt by the "politicized, debt-laden companies," notes one Milan trader (Intesa Sanpaolo -9.9%, Telecom Italia -6%). Multinationals like Eni (E) and Saipem (SAPMY.PK) are all down 2% or less. Eni +1.7%, TI -3.5% premarket. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Monday, February 25, 9:35 AM Eni (E) says it made a natural gas discovery offshore Mozambique which confirms the potential of the area at 75T cu. ft. of gas in place. As well as confirming the size of last May's Coral discovery, Eni says the find at Coral 3 also proved the existence of hydraulic communication with the same reservoir of Coral 1 and Coral 2. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, February 15, 8:46 AM Eni (E) says it plans to increase its 2012 dividend by ~4% despite a similar-sized drop in its Q4 profit, weighed by higher taxes and weaker natural gas sales. "The company will achieve industry-leading upstream growth rates," in 2013, Eni says, with production rising thanks to the start-up of big projects such as the Kashagan oil field in Kazakhstan and the Angola liquefied natural gas project. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, February 13, 9:19 AM Rio Tinto (RIO) decides not to close a struggling alumina refinery in Australia's remote Northern Territory after securing a 10-year supply of natural gas that will substitute for costly fuel oil. The government says it will redirect enough of its contracted supplies of gas to the money-losing refinery to keep it open, subject to an agreement by Eni (E) to supply gas to a government-owned power company. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, February 11, 12:45 PM Eni (E -0.3%) may consider selling its oil services subsidiary Saipem in light of a criminal inquiry into the company for alleged bribes of Algerian officials, CEO Paolo Scaroni says. Prosecutors are investigating whether Saipem, 43% owned by Eni, paid bribes to secure billions of dollars in natural gas contracts over a period of years leading up to 2009. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, February 7, 2:01 PM Italian prosecutors place Eni (E -5%) CEO Paolo Scaroni under investigation as part of a probe into possible corruption of Algerian officials by Eni-controlled oil-service company Sapiem. A source tells WSJ that prosecutors are looking into whether Saipem officials gave kickbacks to procure contracts in Algeria. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 9:54 AM Fines amounting to $8B sought by Nigeria from Shell (RDS.A) and Chevron (CVX) for oil spills are not backed by law, according to the chairman of the country’s Senate Committee on Environment. That doesn't mean laws won't be changed, but observers say tough measures are unlikely to be enforced against companies engaged in partnerships with the government. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, February 1, 8:41 AM Eni (E) will spend a total of $1.45B to develop the Jangkrik North East offshore gas field in Indonesia's Muara Bakau block in the Makassar Strait, according to the head of the country's upstream regulator. The field contains ~417.5B cu. ft. of gas reserves and is expected to start production by 2015. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 29, 2:05 PM Eni (E -3%) shares are hit after revised guidance from subsidiary Saipem (SAPMY.PK) affecting 2012 and 2013 results. For FY 2012, EBIT is forecast to come in ~6% lower than expected, at ~€1.5B and net income at ~€900M; for FY 2013, EBIT is forecast to drop ~80% Y/Y. Earlier, Reuters reported Eni is in talks with Iraq to cut its production target at the Zubair oilfield. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
