- Monday, April 15, 10:43 AM Electronic Arts (EA -1.1%) is doing a social gaming about-face: the company is shuttering Facebook titles The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society due to declining usage. "For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising," says EA in a jab at former lawsuit target Zynga (ZNGA -1.2%), which nonetheless can't be upset about this news. The closings come shortly after EA CEO John Riccitiello resigned, and a fresh round of layoffs were carried out. SimCity Social once had 10M monthly users. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 11, 6:24 PM Electronic Arts (EA) has carried out a fresh round of job cuts, with its Montreal studio ops reportedly hard-hit. The specific number isn't known, though EA does say an initially reported range of 200-250 is too high. The cuts come on top of February layoffs that hit multiple studios, and a couple days after EA was voted (for the second year in a row) the worst company in America by Consumerist readers in an NCAA Tournament-style competition, beating out Bank of America in the final round. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 4, 9:42 AM Electronic Arts (EA) is your latest social sharing app developer: the gaming giant has launched Vue, a free iOS app that doesn't allow you to play any games, but does let you match songs and text with photos to create slideshows, and share them with friends. "We hear this is a low-budget exploratory project," says VentureBeat. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 3, 3:12 PM The Forensic Accounting ETF (FLAG) drops Nike (NKE) and Wal-Mart (WMT) from its portfolio, giving each "F" rankings based on its forensic accounting model. Other "F's" include SNI, XLNX, MOS, and TIF. Those garnering an "A" include CHK, HES, EA and AKAM. Since its Feb. 1 inception, the ETF has matched the S&P's performance. 2 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 2, 10:03 AM Activision (ATVI +2.2%) nears its 52-week high again after UBS starts coverage with a Buy and $17 PT. Archrival Electronic Arts (EA -0.1%) has been started at Neutral. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 28, 6:49 PM Even as console game sales tumbled and PC demand slipped, PC game sales grew 8% last year to $20B, estimates research firm DFC - this figure includes money spent on online titles. Demand from China is believed to have risen 9% to $6.8B, and positive growth was also reportedly seen in the U.S. and Japan. Interestingly, industry trade group PCGA argues mobile is helping PC gaming enabling smaller developers to launch cross-platform initiatives. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 2:10 PM Battlefield 4 will arrive this fall and be available on both PCs and consoles, Electronics Arts' (EA +0.2%) DICE studio announces. No word yet on PS4/Xbox 720 support. A 17-minute trailer (video) has been released to show off the latest addition to the franchise, which remains in pitched battle (pardon the pun) with Activision's (ATVI +0.3%) Call of Duty series. EA claims there are 65M Battlefield players worldwide, and reported having 2.9M Battlefield 3 Premium subs in its Dec. quarter report. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 26, 9:13 AM More on Piper's upgrade of Electronic Arts: Analyst Michael Olson is encouraged by EA's CEO transition, greater clarity about next-gen consoles, the calendar Q4 launch of Battlefield 4, and (given the popularity of EA's FIFA franchise) the 2014 World Cup. Olson admits shares were lower when he downgraded them in January on concerns about weak Dec. and March quarter results (proven justified), but argues the aforementioned factors have led to a better risk/reward. EA +2.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 26, 7:02 AM Piper Jaffray upgrades Electronic Arts (EA) to Overweight and raises its price target on shares to $23. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:21 AM Longbow upgrades Electronic Arts (EA +2.9%) to Buy just two days after shares tumbled due to the FQ4 warning accompanying John Riccitiello's departure. Rival Take-Two (TTWO +1.7%) is also rallying. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 12:29 PM Electronic Arts (EA -7.7%) is now seeing big losses, as the Street concludes its March quarter warning takes priority over John Riccitiello's resignation. Game developers Activision (ATVI -2%), Take-Two (TTWO -1.8%), Zynga (ZNGA -1.7%), and Glu Mobile (GLUU -6.8%) are also lower, as is retailer GameStop (GME -2.3%). EA's warning comes a few days after NPD provided more downbeat retail sales data for the industry to chew on, as aged consoles and a shift to mobile gaming continue taking a toll. - Tuesday, March 19, 9:13 AM Electronic Arts (EA) +1.1%, giving back most of the AH gains it initially saw following news of John Riccitiello's resignation and an FQ4 warning. Needham has cut shares to Hold, arguing Riccitiello's departure "underscores the industry’s difficult transition to new platforms, business models and genres, and seeing yesterday's announcements as a possible "sign of tougher challenges ahead." However, Brean Murray and Stifel view the executive shakeup as a positive. Riccitiello has issued a farewell letter in which he takes responsibility for EA's recent woes. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 18, 4:12 PM John Riccitiello is resigning as Electronic Arts' (EA) CEO, and from EA's board, effective March 30. Chairman Lawrence Probst is now executive chairman, and will run the company while it searches for Riccitiello's successor. EA is also warning it expects FQ4 (March quarter) results to be "at the low end of, or slightly below" prior guidance. The company previously forecast revenue of $1.025B-$1.125B and EPS of $0.57-$0.72; the consensus stands at $1.08B and $0.65. It looks like the Street cares more about the former news than the latter, shares +4.8% AH. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Monday, March 18, 4:03 PM More than 1.1M copies of SimCity were sold through the game's first 2 weeks of availability, Electronic Arts (EA -0.9%) boasts, trying to soothe concerns the server and gameplay issues encountered by early users have badly dented sales. No details on how many sales took place before user complaints soared. 54% of sales have involved downloads, and 44% via EA's Origin online gaming service. EA notes SimCity has led Origin's peak concurrent users to hit a new record of 1.3M. The game still has a rating of just 1.5/5 stars on Amazon. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 4:56 PM More on Electronic Arts: The SimCity launch has gone from bad to worse. While EA offers free game downloads to soothe customers angry about connectivity problems, users are increasingly upset about gameplay issues that lead to huge traffic jams and surreal character movements, among other things. EA says it will fix the issues. On the other hand, mobile game Real Racing 3 is proving a hit, in spite of reviewer complaints about EA's shift to a free-to-play model. The game has snagged the top spot in App Store rankings in 90 countries (it's #10 in the U.S.). Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 3:59 PM NPD's latest round of bleak video game sales data is leading Electronic Arts (EA -2.4%), Activision (ATVI -2.6%), and Take-Two (TTWO -1.6%) to close lower. A 27% Y/Y drop in U.S. physical retail game sales was worse than the normalized 19% drop seen in January, as demand remains tepid ahead of this fall's PlayStation (SNE) and Xbox (MSFT) refreshes. Console sales fell 36%, worse than January's normalized 17%. The Xbox was the best-selling console for the 19th straight month, and the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo's (NTDOY.PK) Wii U saw strong M/M growth off small bases. 1 Comment [Tech]
