- Friday, March 15, 3:59 PM NPD's latest round of bleak video game sales data is leading Electronic Arts (EA -2.4%), Activision (ATVI -2.6%), and Take-Two (TTWO -1.6%) to close lower. A 27% Y/Y drop in U.S. physical retail game sales was worse than the normalized 19% drop seen in January, as demand remains tepid ahead of this fall's PlayStation (SNE) and Xbox (MSFT) refreshes. Console sales fell 36%, worse than January's normalized 17%. The Xbox was the best-selling console for the 19th straight month, and the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo's (NTDOY.PK) Wii U saw strong M/M growth off small bases. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 8:16 AM GameStop (GME), Electronic Arts (EA), and Activision Blizzard (ATVI) are on watch after NPD reports videogame sales fell 25% Y/Y in February to extend a long downward trend in sales. Physical games only account for 50% of the market now. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, March 8, 5:13 PM The launch of a revamped SimCity hasn't exactly gone the way Electronic Arts (EA) planned. With EA's servers suffering huge connectivity issues (a user needs to access them to play the game), Amazon temporarily stopped accepting digital orders - disgruntled customers have given the game a rating of 1 out of 5 stars - and EA has asked partners to suspend marketing. EA says it's adding more servers, but refuses to provide refunds. Before the server mayhem commenced, reviews were mostly positive. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, February 28, 9:19 AM Gamers buying Electronic Arts (EA) titles better get used to in-app purchases: At a Morgan Stanley conference (transcript), CFO Blake Jorgensen said EA wants to integrate "microtransactions," now a mobile gaming staple but disliked by some hardcore gamers, into every title it releases, and has created an "amazing back-end" to make this possible. Separately, EA says it has completed a project that will allow users to maintain a single identity across gaming platforms, and quickly find friends playing a given title as a result. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 19, 2:46 PM Electronic Arts (EA +3.4%) and Take-Two (TTWO +3.1%) have rallied today; EA is within a hair's breadth of its 52-week high, and Take-Two is only 4% away from its own. The latest reports (I, II) about Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 (expected to be announced tomorrow) could be stoking investor optimism. Both game developers rallied (I, II) following their calendar Q4 reports. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:15 PM Electronic Arts (EA -1.3%) and Zynga (ZNGA -0.9%) have settled their legal dispute; terms are undisclosed for now. EA sued Zynga for copyright infringement in August, alleging The Ville is a ripoff of The Sims Social. Zynga responded by accusing EA of trying to make it sign an illegal non-poaching agreement. AppData's figures (I, II) suggest neither The Ville nor The Sims Social is especially popular on Facebook these days, though the latter is faring a little better. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 15, 11:41 AM Activision (ATVI +1.7%) and Take-Two (TTWO +1.6%) are higher after Piper argues NPD's January data indicates the game developers continue to take share, and that U.S. physical retail video game sales were better-than-expected (even if they fell 19% Y/Y on a normalized basis). Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops II was January's bestselling title, and Take-Two's NBA 2K13 came in at #4. Electronics Arts (EA -1.1%) and GameStop (GME -1.4%) are lower. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 8, 11:40 AM Activision (ATVI +11.6%) is making multi-year highs following a Q4 beat fueled by a record 44% op. margin and soaring Skylanders toy sales. Sterne Agee has upgraded shares to Buy, declaring Activision well-positioned for upcoming console refreshes and predicting major buybacks are on the way. Management noted on the earnings call most of the Q4 decline in World of Warcraft subs came from China, and that Western subs were relatively stable. Electronic Arts (EA +2.2%) is higher, and so is Chinese Warcraft partner NetEase (NTES +6.7%). 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 6, 5:58 PM Electronic Arts' (EA) Chillingo mobile game publishing unit has scored a deal to handle game-publishing for Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Android app store. In an effort to take share from Google Play (and lessen its dependence on Google a little), Samsung will let developers keep 100% of revenue for the first 6 months their app is available, with Samsung's cut gradually rising to a standard 30% after 2 years. EA's mobile revenue rose 19% Y/Y in the December quarter, but only accounted for 8% of total sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 4, 5:05 PM Electronic Arts (EA) +1.6% AH after CEO John Riccitello discloses he recently bought 31K shares. The news comes shortly after EA rallied in the face of underwhelming FQ3 results and FQ4 guidance. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 31, 2:40 PM Though FQ3 sales and FQ4 guidance fell short of estimates, Electronic Arts (EA +4.5%) is having a good day. Low expectations following a torrent of negative industry data are helping, and so might decent numbers for some digital offerings. Battlefield 3 Premium subs rose by 900K Q/Q to 2.9M, FIFA 13 digital revenue topped $100M, The Simpsons: Tapped Out was the quarter's top-grossing iOS game ($23M), Origin's registered base rose by 9M to 39M (17M mobile), and total mobile sales rose 19% to $99M. Console revenue fell 28%. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, January 30, 6:11 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Citrix (CTXS - earnings) expects Q1 revenue of $670M-$680M and EPS of $0.62-$0.63 vs. a consensus of $670.7M and $0.67. Expects 2013 revenue of $2.95B-$2.98B and EPS of $3.13-$3.15 vs. a consensus of $2.91B and $3.14. 2) ServiceNow (NOW - earnings) expects Q1 revenue of $81.5M-$82.5M and EPS of -$0.05 to -$0.04 vs. a consensus of $78.1M and -$0.01. Expects 2013 revenue of $387M-$392M vs. consensus of $368.3M. 3) Electronic Arts (EA - earnings) expects FQ4 revenue of $1.025B-$1.125B and EPS of $0.57-$0.72, mostly below a consensus of $1.22B and $0.71. CTXS +11.6% AH. NOW +8%. EA -1.9%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 4:03 PM Electronic Arts (EA): FQ3 EPS of $0.57 in-line. Revenue of $1.18B misses by $0.11B. Shares -3.9% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move, Tech]
