Obama says violent video games will be studied as part of his administration's response to the Newtown, CT shooting. - Friday, January 11, 9:54 AM Electronic Arts (EA -1.1%) and GameStop (GME -1.7%) open lower after NPD reports U.S. physical retail video game hardware and software sales for the pivotal month of December fell 27% and 23% Y/Y, respectively. Those numbers are much worse than the 13% and 11% drops reported for November, and are particularly discouraging in light of hopes new game launches would stabilize demand. But traditional developers such as EA, ATVI, and TTWO are finding it's more than what many mobile gamers are willing to pay (up-front, at least), as they increasingly opt for free titles monetized via in-app purchases. Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a $5 title, had fallen to #25 on the iPhone app chart, and #52 on the iPad app chart, as of Christmas. Though Electronic Arts (EA +3.7%) reported a 45% Y/Y increase in FQ2 digital revenue - something that covers downloads, mobile and Internet games, and ads - it also saw its social gaming monthly users fall 58% Y/Y to 42M. User activity for The Sims Social has plunged after a strong 2011 reception, and SimCity Social, launched in June, hasn't been a smash hit. FQ3 guidance for revenue of $325M-$375M and EPS of $0.45-$0.60 is below a consensus of $434.1M and $0.73, but Take-Two investors, accustomed to seeing such forecasts, seem to have priced that in. - Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 7:07 PM "Our [fiscal] Q3 looks soft mostly due to Medal of Honor," spoke Electronic Arts (EA) CEO John Riccitello on his company's earnings call. The Street has been concerned for a while about the reception for Medal of Honor Warfighter, which went on sale last week to underwhelming reviews.
