After-hours top losers: DATA -5.1%. QEP -3.8%. CPRT -3.8%. RPAI -3.6%. EA -2.3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, May 17, 5:04 PM GameStop (GME +4.5%) closed with a big gain after NPD reported U.S. physical retail video game sales fell 17% Y/Y in April, better than some feared; they fell 1% in March, and 27% in Feb. Hardware sales fell 42%, as gamers wait for this fall's launches. Total industry physical retail sales fell 25%; as Electronic Arts (EA +0.9%) and Activision's (ATVI +0.5%) latest results show, such sales make up a declining portion of industry revenue. Take-Two's (TTWO +1.9%) Bioshock: Infinite and NBA 2K13 were the month's 3rd and 7th-most popular titles, and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Skylanders Giants were #4 and #8. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, May 7, 5:52 PM Electronic Arts (EA) now +7.7% AH as better-than-feared FY14 guidance overshadows an FQ4 EPS miss. Activision (ATVI) +1.1%. EA's "Digital' revenue (inc. downloads, subscriptions, ad sales, etc.) rose 45% Y/Y to $618M, while packaged goods/other revenue fell 25% to $396M. Consoles 65% of net revenue (66% a year ago), PCs 21% (25% prior), mobile 9% (6% prior), handhelds 3% (1% prior). Free cash flow was $208M vs. net income of $169M. Battlefield 3 Premium subs rose by 600K to 3.5M. The Simpsons: Tapped Out produced almost $10M in net revenue in March; Real Racing 3 is also doing well on iOS. (PR) Comment! After-hours top gainers, as of 5:30 p.m.: PSE +20%. WBMD +14%. ARAY +12%. EA +9%. WFM +7.7%.
After-hours top losers: VCLK -14%. RBCN -12%. SYNC -12%. CORE -7%. CIE -7%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, May 7, 4:06 PM Electronic Arts (EA): FQ4 EPS of $0.55 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $1.04B (+6% Y/Y) in-line. Expects FQ1 revenue of $450M and EPS of -$0.62, below a consensus of $542.7M and -$0.36. Expects FY14 revenue of $4B and EPS of $1.20 vs. a consensus of $4.1B and $1.10. Shares +4.9% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 5:47 PM Electronic Arts (EA) +2.1% AH after announcing a multi-year deal with Disney (DIS) to make new Star Wars games "spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres." Disney maintains the rights to develop mobile, online, and social games for the franchise. The deal comes shortly after Disney decided to shutter LucasArts' game development studio, and close to 18 months after EA launched Star Wars: The Old Republic, whose performance has underwhelmed. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, April 19, 4:31 PM Take-Two (TTWO +3.8%) closes with a strong gain after NPD reports BioShock Infinite was the best-selling traditional video game in the U.S. in March. NBA 2K13, another Take-Two title, came 8th. NPD's industry-wide data was mixed. Retail console sales fell 32% Y/Y, nearly as bad as February's 36% drop, but game sales only fell 1% after declining 27% in the prior month. Accessories sales rose 15%, thanks in part to strong demand for Skylanders (ATVI +1%) merchandise. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 10:03 AM Activision (ATVI +2.2%) nears its 52-week high again after UBS starts coverage with a Buy and $17 PT. Archrival Electronic Arts (EA -0.1%) has been started at Neutral. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 26, 9:13 AM More on Piper's upgrade of Electronic Arts: Analyst Michael Olson is encouraged by EA's CEO transition, greater clarity about next-gen consoles, the calendar Q4 launch of Battlefield 4, and (given the popularity of EA's FIFA franchise) the 2014 World Cup. Olson admits shares were lower when he downgraded them in January on concerns about weak Dec. and March quarter results (proven justified), but argues the aforementioned factors have led to a better risk/reward. EA +2.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:21 AM Longbow upgrades Electronic Arts (EA +2.9%) to Buy just two days after shares tumbled due to the FQ4 warning accompanying John Riccitiello's departure. Rival Take-Two (TTWO +1.7%) is also rallying. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 12:29 PM Electronic Arts (EA -7.7%) is now seeing big losses, as the Street concludes its March quarter warning takes priority over John Riccitiello's resignation. Game developers Activision (ATVI -2%), Take-Two (TTWO -1.8%), Zynga (ZNGA -1.7%), and Glu Mobile (GLUU -6.8%) are also lower, as is retailer GameStop (GME -2.3%). EA's warning comes a few days after NPD provided more downbeat retail sales data for the industry to chew on, as aged consoles and a shift to mobile gaming continue taking a toll. (earlier) 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 4:12 PM John Riccitiello is resigning as Electronic Arts' (EA) CEO, and from EA's board, effective March 30. Chairman Lawrence Probst is now executive chairman, and will run the company while it searches for Riccitiello's successor. EA is also warning it expects FQ4 (March quarter) results to be "at the low end of, or slightly below" prior guidance. The company previously forecast revenue of $1.025B-$1.125B and EPS of $0.57-$0.72; the consensus stands at $1.08B and $0.65. It looks like the Street cares more about the former news than the latter, shares +4.8% AH. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, February 19, 2:46 PM Electronic Arts (EA +3.4%) and Take-Two (TTWO +3.1%) have rallied today; EA is within a hair's breadth of its 52-week high, and Take-Two is only 4% away from its own. The latest reports (I, II) about Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 (expected to be announced tomorrow) could be stoking investor optimism. Both game developers rallied (I, II) following their calendar Q4 reports. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

TruffelPig: If you bought EA January 3 or so and they would be bought for $20 you would have lost money! That is NOT bullish really.

Chris Lau: Still expect big short term rallies on the way down. Until ad growth justifies current size, valuation will limit upside.

PandaBearish: EA has no cash cows. SWTOR was a huge flop that never broke 2 million subscribers and D3's cash auction house is $$ in the bank for ATVI
