eBay Live Auctions Successor - Able Auctions? [view article]
I've only had very good experiences with eBay Live auctioneers. The applet itself is kind of clunky and does not work very well, the timing is always messed up but it does allow you to reach a variety of sellers you would otherwise never hear of. It's also been great for sellers who would otherwise never connect with so many buyers. I'm not sure where the fraud is, but with the antique and collectable sellers I've done business with, it has been very honest and fair. I think it's pretty weak that eBay is backing out of this part if the industry. Shill bidding, bad sellers and fraud are rampant everywhere else on eBay. As for their poor seller ratings, I've noticed that some of the ones I deal with have 96-98%, which is surprising but that may have to do with their commission structures, taxes and shipping fees which some buyers overlook in the fine print. Q2 Predictions for eBay Business Segments [view article]
The previous article lays it on the table very clearly for all to see. There are no lies in that article...unlike that which is commonly found in the press regarding ebay.It is certainly all there to see for those who are willing to do their homework.
Do not be stuck holding an ebay stock in their current state. Some of it is the economics of the country, while the majority of it is poor corporate decisions not being thought out or researched enough prior to implementation.
I will say it right now, you don't have to listen...
Ebay is breaking many laws and will be held accountable for their actions at some point in the near future. I can't see them hiding their "creative" accounting and business practices for much longer before they are exposed.
Mark my words...and it would be advisable to use this time to do your own investigation while you still have a shirt.
You will have to search beyond the first pages of google to get past the propaganda. Reply

What's the purpose of Seeking Alpha ?Is it to study investment strategies?
Is it to pump and dump stocks for daytraders?
Or is it for people with no lives to sit and fester in their own caves of despair? I'm beginning to think it's all of these.
I laugh at you and all who sit here saying "eBay is one of the most despised internet entities..." - by what qualification? As of now whitehouse.gov is also "one of the most despised internet entities..." yet somehow it's not going out of business either, despite the thousands of its "users" who have been defrauded and yes, even killed by its policies.
Good luck, losers. Buy now (to use an eBay term).

ShowmeDataWith all do respect, do you live in a cave? Because that can be the only possible answer to being so oblivious to the turmoil that has been roiling around ebay and paypal the last few months.
ebay has become one of the most despised internet entities known today.
Thousands, yes, THOUSANDS, of ebay sellers have closed shop. Including Yours Truly! Including many, many, many of the old-timers that have been there from the beginning. And that, in and of itself, is extremely telling!
And yes, this is World Wide... don't kid yourself.
I'm not going to re-cap all the malignant practices generated by this company. I expect you to do the research for youself. No excuses. Start right here... Seeking Alpha. Type in ebay behind that. Start reading. Go back several months.
THEN, go to some other boards. Start searching. Read some more. In truth, Seeking Alpha is one of the few sites that has anything positive to say about ebay and paypal anymore.
Now read, and read some more. No excuses. You'll get all your answers. Knock yourself out.
Here's a broadcast news reporting that pretty well sums this up:
seekingalpha.com/artic...
And yes, it really is that bad. That's a pretty good reflection of what's going on with this company today.
And paypal is WORSE around the world. Why are these companies still surviving? What makes you think, over the long haul, that they will?
Now, just so that we are all clear on this, yes, THOUSANDS upon thousands have left, both ebay AND paypal. Have no doubt about that.
Pull your head out of the sand, and look around. I think even Wall Street is beginning to get it.
Can't wait for Quarter 3. Reply

5 Key Quotes from Amazon on the E-Commerce Industry [view article]
In the earnings press release from Amazon.com today, Amazon included a $53 million one-time non-cash gain as "operating earnings" for their reported FY08 Q3, thus increasing their reported earnings per share for the reported quarter. Although I am not an accountant, this does not seem legitimate.
Making this seem even more suspect (to me), is the fact that when asked by analyst Scott Devitt of Stifel Nicolaus during the subsequent conference call, Amazon stated that they are excluding said $53 million one-time non-cash charge in their full-year "operating-earnin... guidance. Is this acceptable?
Can they use a one-time non-cash gain as operating earnings one place, but not another?
Can they use a one-time non-cash gain as operating earnings--at all ??
Sounds like Amazon, in effect, pulled a rabbit out of a hat to "make" their quarter, and please the Wall Street community. I can't imaging this is an acceptable, forthright nor an honest accounting practice. It may be even sneaky.
"Operator"
Your next question comes from the line of Scott Devitt ā Stifel Nicolaus
Scott Devitt ā Stifel Nicolaus
As it relates to the guidance and the change for the guidance last quarter you gave full year GAAP operating income guidance $740 to $940 and the GAAP operating income this quarter was I believe $57 million above expectations including the $53 million gain so Iām trying to get my hands around the updated guidance which is mostly unchanged from the prior GAAP operating income guidance and whether this new guidance includes or excludes the $53 million gain.
Thomas Szkutak
Yes, the GAAP, the guidance excludes the $53 million gain." Reply

ShowmeData -I nearly forgot something. The Restricted Activites Paypal references can be found in Section 9.1 of the user agreement.
Subparagraph n is particularly interesting. Here it is:
Have a credit score from a credit reporting agency that indicates a high level of risk associated with your use of the Services;
Subparagraph k is even more interesting. Here it is:
Conduct your business or use the Services in a manner that results in or may result in complaints, Disputes, Claims, Reversals, Chargebacks, fees, fines, penalties and other liability to PayPal, a User, a third party or you;
Have a great evening!

Dinah's response to ShowmeData -It took a while but I finally found the 6 month (180 days) hold for you buried in Section 10.2 of the user agreement last modifed on July 9, 2008. This clause should concern shareholders because it's why eBay lost several high volume sellers and I don't know any business that can survive a 6 month hold on their monies.
Here's Section 10.2 in its entirety.
10.2 Actions by PayPal. If we have reason to believe that you have engaged in any Restricted Activities, we may take various actions to protect PayPal, eBay, a User, a third party, or you from Reversals, Chargebacks, Claims, fees, fines, penalties and any other liability. The actions we may take include but are not limited to the following:
We may close, suspend, or limit your access to your Account or the Services (such as limiting access to any of your Funding Sources, and your ability to send money, make withdrawals, or remove financial Information);
We may contact third parties and disclose details of the Restricted Activities in the manner set out in our Privacy Policy;
We may update inaccurate Information you provided us;
We may refuse to provide our Services to you in the future;
We may hold your funds for up to 180 Days if reasonably needed to protect against the risk of liability; and
We may take legal action against you.
