eBay: Bottom Is a Few Months Away [view article]
Bob C. and Chaug: I couldn't have said it better. Plus I'll add, I sold months ago at a profit before the stock took a dump into the plague-infested dumpster. I bought stock way back when it first went on the stock exchange. I sold some at a profit thru the years and bought more. When I saw where Ebay was headed months ago, I sold the remaining shares I had at a profit just in the nick of time....the only "good" thing that's come from Ebay this year.BTW, I was a 10+ year seller who helped make Ebay the great auction site it USED to be. Now it's a mountain of B.S. I don't foresee it ever becoming viable again. They have flipped the finger to us all and we will not forgive and forget. I hope the ship sinks with all the management freaks onboard. Reply

Bob C has it right, Dan, and I 2nd this suggestion. Just give it a try, and see what you think of Donohue after a month.Reply

Its not turnaround, its spin. This company has damaged its core base of customer, some severely thus damaging its brand, Donohoe is ultimately responsible for this! The Wizard of Oz springs to mind. No Dorothy for Donohue but hundreds of thousands of people called noise who will damage the brand further. The right ship, nay lad your history should remind you of the Titanic! Reply

By the way Dan,I just checked your Bio, and see that you don't have a full time job.
Try selling on eBay part time for one month, and then report back to us about your warm and fuzzy feeling about John Donahoe. Reply

I keep laughing at all of the analysts looking at numbers rather than reality. Ebay provides a service. It doesn't sell anything, it doesn't manufacture anything nor does it provide raw materials, it provides a service. Ebay relies on other people/businesses to use their service to gain access to foot traffic. Ebay WAS unique when it started and grew becouse of it. Under John Donahoes command it is no longer unique. He may be , as you state "making all the right moves" but it doesn't apply to Ebay. JD has "maddened" most, if not ALL of the people/businesses that made Ebay the 800lb gorilla it once was. Donahoe's vision was to trim the lower 10% of the sellers and become a mega-mall with "Buy-it-now" sales of the usual "New" items. Nothing "Unique" about that. He is piloting the world's largest garage sale into being a mall with very few stores and nothing you can't buy anywhere else. Ebay's stock WILL NOT RECOVER until Donahoe is removed. Ebay needed to "fix" it's problems not make new ones. As a tylical example, the new "beta" operating platform is available for review and it has less usable features and all the same redundant links. It's amazing, for years user's of Ebay have complained about customer service, difficulty of use, scams and lack of "buyer education". Have these issues been addressed? NO! Same problems, new boss. Good Luck Ebay! I will recommend a "sell" status until Donahoe is removed and a new CEO installed that will "FIX" the problems and bring back the uniqueness of Ebay. Bah, it was guys like Scot giving their input that caused eBay to make these sorts of changes in the first place. If you went to the PowerSeller boards when the changes were implemented, you got mostly cheering. After they say how they were affected, now they are complaining with the rest.
Scot, beware what you ask for as you may get it. Reply

"I believe Donahoe is doing the right things to right the ship."Do you get paid to write this crap??
Donahoe tried to make eBay's customers, the sellers, walk the plank. Instead they have been, and still are, abandoning the the rat infested ship in record numbers.
You Are right about its shares not being at the bottom yet, but Enron shares will look good by the time Donahoe floats off in his golden lifeboat. Reply

Starting Oct-20th ,some sellers as well as Buyers have Civil Cases that will be filed against E-bay.This is the same day E-bay will stop accepting checks and money orders, forcing some people to use there Paypal, which lawyers view this as discrimination,to there advantage. #5) Nuke UPII'm curious what you mean about this? Both you and TameBay have thrown this idea around before but what exactly do you propose eBay do about this? Last year over 10% of my sales went unpaid and it cost me a serious amount of money in lost sales, unsold inventory, and eBay fees because I didn't want to get retaliatory feedback from the buyers by filing a UPI dispute.
Are you saying we should have non paying buyers and just let it go? Or are you saying that eBay should just know these are unpaid and handle everything automatically? eBay's new "electronic only" payments would allow that to finally be possible. Reply

Coin Dealers Sue eBay In Antitrust Class ActionClass Action 2008/09/03 08:55
eBay conspired with the American Numismatic Association and the Professional Numismatists Guild to exclude small coin dealers and grading services from the Internet coin market, four plaintiffs say in a class action antitrust complaint in Federal Court. Universal Grading Service claims the defendants, including Barry Struppler & Co., conspired "to obstruct the ability of the smaller coin grading services to participate in the coin marketplace on eBay."
Led by the Professional Numismatists Guild, the defendants did this by forming an "'Internet rules committee' made up of coin industry insiders, including Barry Struppler, in his capacity as then ANA governor and chairman of the ANA Consumer Protection Committee," the complaint states.
It continues: "(A) primary purpose of the PNG 'Internet rules committee' from 2001 through 2004 was to interfere with and obstruct the ability of the smaller coin grading services, including UGS, to participate in the then burgeoning coin marketplace on eBay by, among other things, formally and informally accusing Plaintiffs of selling 'counterfeit' coins and otherwise engaging in fraudulent conduct with regard to purchasing and selling certified coins and/or grading coins that were purchased and sold on the Internet via eBay."
Plaintiffs claim the defendants formed their "Coins Community Watch group" for the purpose of defaming and excluding smaller coin services from the marketplace.
Plaintiffs demand treble damages and an injunction. They are represented by Marina Trubitsky.

Footnote:I now make a solid living wage by working other sites.
There are several regular posters "not posting" as much as previous. I suspect they are busy, busy, busy selling on their new sites. Working. Hard.
The shopping season is rapidly approaching. Do NOT delay, the time is NOW to start if you have not already begun to diversify. Do not miss the opportunity.
Do you want to survive, or thrive?

I hope all these (justifiably) outraged and enraged sellers are helping to build up other sites in the meantime! I realize it is a tremendous amount of work... but necessary!Paypal will keep ebay afloat for many a year unless other venues are promoted and worked. Go to other sites that are fast growing; they offer Googlecheckout etc. Promote alternate pay venues actively and help to solidly establish and make their revenue healthy.
It will be a lot of work, I know. Often I put in 12 to 14 hours a day. But without a doubt current ebay sellers now put in this kind of time, and are now not rewarded with suitable monetary value.
In these uncertain financial times it is best to diversify. Life is now much more stabilized for myself and I'm sure others, too, that have gone elsewhere.
ebay is freely spending your hard earned money acquiring other venues while dumping employees just at the start of holiday time. They have a healthy balance sheet now but if there is a world wide financial crash...?
I hope to be ready. By the way, all this turmoil ebay has created has opened a Pandora's box that ebay can no longer close. Smug enough not to realize how fully it has taught MANY to conduct searches and shop elsewhere. The quality of buyer seems to have VASTLY deteriorated since Donahoe took over.
But that's another post. Reply

FORGOT TO MENTION THE BEST MATCH SEARCH RESULTS- What the heck does that mean anyway? Ebay cannot QUANTIFY it. It is AMBIGOUS and nobody really knows what it means. It seems to me that it means the bigger the Seller, the better the search results, plain and simple. Despite my high ratings, my items are lower in the search results than other sellers with higher shipping and lower DSR's. It's not enough that I work my butt off to make my listings attractive to buyers, now Ebay wants to control how, when and where they show up? GET REAL, GET A CLUE EBAY. YOU ARE LOSING YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET - THE SELLERS!! Replyits
eBay: A glimmer of Hope for Feedback [view article]
I am a Silver level Powerseller for 5 years and running. I too used to love my job and now I dread it. I have been saying for months that I feel like I am in grade-school again being graded like a child. I didn't know Ebay was my employer. WE are Ebay's customers first, not the buyers.I have 100% feedback (knock on wood) and 4.9 DSR's except for shipping at 4.8. I am at the highest of all levels of everything I can be on the Seller Dashboard AND I am beating the average on the entire Ebay site for all 4 DSR categories. I should be getting the maximum discount and the highest in search results, right? Guess again! With the pitiful 15% discount I am getting, it is hardly worth it.
1) DO THE MATH: I would make more money each month if I RAISED my shipping price by one dollar and didn't receive any discount at all. My shipping DSR's will never go up. I have been through two USPS rate hikes without raising my shipping prices and I have LOWERED my cost to combine shipping on multiple purchases. When I list an item Ebay still throws up the red ATTENTION SELLER! box and tells me my shipping costs are too high? Do they know what it costs to send a package across country? NO!! If my shipping were any cheaper I would be losing money.
2) FREE SHIPPING - ARE YOU KIDDING? Why would I slit my own throat? Ebay's own statistics in their recent Power Up mailing said the average DSR for free shipping is 4.8. Even when the buyers get free shipping, they still penalize you on shipping DSR'S?? Idiots. I'll go ahead and continue to charge for shipping and keep my DSR's at 4.8 without losing money. Let's say I sell 100 items a month and my average cost to ship an item is $8. That's $800 a month in shipping costs. Even at the max discount of 20%, and doubled with items shipped free, I am still LOSING MONEY if I ship for free. 40% Discount on fees does NOT equal $800. Don't be fooled!
3) Don't do away with the Unpaid Item Process - FIX IT!! It is our only pitiful recourse for Non-payers. My non-paying bidders have tripled since the feedback changes and DSR's. A non-paying bidder sent payment AFTER I closed the dispute and resold the item. I returned the payment with a note. She had her Unpaid Strike reversed and then was able to leave negative feedback because she proved that she sent payment, even though the payment was returned. I fought hard to have the feedback removed! After I close a dispute and "wish to end communication with the buyer" don't let them pay! REMOVE THE PAY NOW BUTTON FROM THE LISTING.
4) REMOVE THE SHIPPING COST DSR - Let's face it - nobody wants to pay shipping charges. Buyers have no clue what it costs to ship an item. They agreed to pay your price when they bid. Then they get to stick it to you when they leave feedback. If you are shipping for free and still not getting a 5 on DSR's by Ebay's own admission, you are crazy.
5) ONLY POSTIVE FEEDBACK FOR THE BUYERS - Like so many others have said, this is a way to warn other sellers of bad behavior. Buyers know how to manipulate the system and know when their Unpaid Strikes drop off. THANKS EBAY FOR MAKING THE SELLER POWERLESS AND VULNERABLE. It makes the term "Power Seller" an oxymoron and a joke.
6) ANONYMITY AND THE EVIL ALL-POWERFUL BUYER - It's fun to buy an item, leave glaring positive feedback for the Seller and then give low DSR's!!! Whoo HOOO!! Nobody will know! I am empowered and my name is The Buyer. Ebay has given ME all the power!! I can be rude, demanding, pay late, not pay at all and I AM IN CONTROL. THANKS EBAY!
7) NOW WHAT? If I sound bitter, it's because I am. Ebay has punished the good sellers with their reign of control and new policies. My ratings are high and I am still pi**ed. The idiot buyers don't realize they are hurting the entire marketplace with their back door DSR's and empowered attitude. The more sellers who leave, the less supply of an item, and the higher the price of similar items due to an increase in demand. It's basic supply and demand Ebay. I challenge the Ebay executives to make a living selling on Ebay for 1 month. Go ahead. I dare you...
8) THE EBAY ALTERNATIVE - Now is the time to formulate an exit strategy. I hope Ebay has the worst holiday selling season ever. Then again, they are so stupid that they will just do more to punish the long-time loyal Sellers. If anybody has a list of good alternative auction venues, I would love to hear it! Reply
