- Tuesday, June 18, 8:49 AM BHP Billiton's (BHP) plans to sell a coal mine in New Mexico to the Navajo Nation for ~$85M have been derailed by proposed reforms of the state's electricity market. The Navajos had expected to close a deal with BHP by July 1, but it can't go ahead until a separate deal is completed between two utilities for part of a power station that buys coal from the mine on Navajo land. Comment! [Commodities]
- Friday, June 14, 8:10 AM Consolidated Edison (ED) is upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citigroup after the firm's positive meetings with ED management and a recent pullback in shares. The upward revision is based on wide support for storm hardening spending including at Mayor Bloomberg’s recent press conference, leading to further rate base growth, and the removal of overhangs from Hurricane Sandy response. ED +0.7% premarket. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, June 7, 3:42 PM Bernstein's Hugh Wynne predicts these regulated utilities are least likely to sustain their dividends: UNS, AVA, BKH, PNM, UIL, POM, GXP and ED. Most likely to sustain dividends, in his view: CMS, EIX, WEC, OGE, EE and TEG. Comment! [Energy, Quick Ideas]

- Friday, April 26, 5:45 PM In case you missed it, Consolidated Edison (ED), the same power company that stumbled in its efforts to restore power after superstorm Sandy swept through New York and New Jersey, paid out more than $4M in incentive bonuses to top brass. ED explicitly linked the payouts to performance in a year that included Sandy, a work stoppage and a long hot summer that triggered power outages across NYC. 2 Comments [Energy]

- Tuesday, February 26, 6:08 AM Low interest rates may be hurting corporate pension funds, but companies continue to exploit the opportunity to issue debt on the cheap, with eight yesterday selling $9.9B in bonds. Pepsi (PEP) led the way by raising $2.5B, followed by UnitedHealth (UNH) with $2.25B and Caterpillar Financial Services (CAT) with $1.1B. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Sunday, February 10, 3:39 AM Airports in the North East are slowly ramping up operations after over 5,700 U.S. flights were cancelled yesterday and on Friday mostly because of the snow storm , with another 241 canceled for today. The blizzard dropped up to 40 inches of snow, cut power to over half a million customers, and left at least nine people dead. Entergy's (ETR) Pilgrim nuclear plant in Massachusetts shut down safely after losing its outside power supply. (Flight tracker) Comment! [Energy, Consumer]
- Friday, February 8, 5:11 PM With Nemo bearing down on the Northeast, it begs the question: Are power companies better prepared for this storm than they were for Sandy? Nearly 2K people in New Jersey an New York are still without power from the hurricane, and with Nemo expected to dump up to 30 inches of snow and near-hurricane gusts in some areas, it's a question worth asking. 5 Comments [Energy]
