- Tuesday, June 18, 9:45 AM MSCI's reclassification of Greece to emerging market is a yawner as far as ETFs go, writes Dennis Hudachek, as the country's presence in the EFA is less than 0.10%. With Coca-Cola Hellenic (CCHBF.PK) no longer part of the MSCI Greek Index, the country's addition to the EEM will be of minimal effect. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, June 18, 8:54 AM "The biggest contrarian play in the market today is assets linked to China (FXI, CAF)," says Michael Hartnett, summarizing BAML's latest Fund Manager Survey, which shows money flowing out of commodities (DBC) and emerging markets (EEM, DEM, VWO). Where's the money going? The eurozone and the U.S. Where it's not going is fixed-income (AGG, BND) - 50% of managers say they're now underweight bonds as opposed to 38% last month. Comment!
- Tuesday, June 11, 9:18 AM The EEM slides 1.9% and the VWO -1.8% premarket amid panicky selling overnight in emerging markets. The sector treaded water for most of the year, but began a steep turn downward about one month ago, and is now underperforming the S&P by about 2,400 basis points YTD. There's no premarket action in the DEM, but it's tracking the other 2 popular emerging market ETF plays. 3 Comments [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 11, 5:45 AM The rout in emerging markets has continued today, with the South African rand (EZA) sliding 1.6% to 10.35 to the dollar, the yield on 10-year government bonds jumping 27.5 bps to 8.17%, and the JSE Top 40 sinking 1.8%. Meanwhile, Thai shares lost 4.5%, Indonesia 3.9% and the Philippines 4.6%. (See rupee hits record lows) Comment! [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Monday, May 20, 9:47 AM UBS' 5 "suspected" asset bubbles: 1) Risk-free rates - specifically Treasurys (TLT), Bunds (BUND, BUNL), JGBs (JGBL, JGBT, JGBD, JGBS) 2) Credit (HYG, JNK) 3) Real estate in Asia (WPS) 4) Certain EM equity markets (EIDO, IDXJ, EPHE, THD, EWW) 5) Australian banks (WBK, NABZY.PK, ANZBY.PK, CMWAY.PK). Comment!
- Friday, May 17, 9:26 AM Thai stocks (THD) rise 0.62%, helped by 7% gains for Shin Corp. (SHNZY.PK) and Minor International (MNILF.OB) which will both be added to the MSCI Emerging Markets (EEM) index. Elsewhere in the region, stocks in Indonesia (IDX) rise 1.32%, continuing to defy analysts' predictions (I, II) of a steep sell-off, and post-midterm election profit-taking continues in the Philippines (EPHE), where stocks fall 0.42%. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 14, 10:42 AM "Contrarians should start buying emerging markets (EEM, DEM, VWO) and think about global energy (XLE) and material companies (XLB) and commodities (DBC)," says BAML's John Bilton, noting a "marked uptick" in concern about China (FXI, CAF) in his firm's latest fund manger survey. One-in-four now consider a Chinese hard landing as the biggest risk to their investment. Where respondents are not fearful? Japan (EWJ, DXJ). (previous) 4 Comments [Global & FX, Commodities]
- Tuesday, May 14, 8:59 AM GMO's 7-year asset allocation model for U.S. stocks (VTI) is now predicting negative returns, says James Montier, presenting at the London Value Conference, and telling the audience GMO is now 50% in cash. Liking Europe (VGK, EZU, FEZ) a year ago, the big run has GMO less excited now. The best value could be emerging markets (EEM, DEM, VWO), but China's property bubble has GMO allocating less to EM than its models suggest. 14 Comments [Global & FX]
- Friday, April 19, 9:18 AM Shanghai posted its biggest gain in a month, +2.1% as regulators look to lure more money into stocks, mulling plans to allow A shares to be added to well-known international indexes, including the MSCI Emerging Markets Index (EEM, VWO). FXI +2.9%, Morgan Stanley China A Share Fund (CAF) +5% premarket. 1 Comment [Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 16, 11:00 AM BAML's fund manager survey shows a slide in exuberance with just 49% of respondents expecting a stronger global economy in the next year - a 12 point drop from last month. Particularly noteworthy is the 30-point, 2-month decline in emerging market (EEM. DEM, VWO) confidence - at the lowest level in 2 years and with a small majority now underweight. 1 Comment
- Monday, April 8, 3:17 PM VelocityShares launches 3 emerging market ETFs comprised exclusively of depository receipts (DRs) listed in developed countries. The funds cover broad Emerging Market DRs (EMDR), Emerging Asia DRs (ASDR) and Russian DRs (RUDR). By sticking to DRs, the 3 new funds are far more concentrated in their holdings than existing ETFs in the space (example, EMDR has 305 holdings vs. 1,280 for IEMG). The 0.65% charged by the funds means they're generally pricey relative to established competitors like IEMG/VWO (0.18%), EEM (0.66%), SCHE (0.15%), GMF (0.59%), RSX (0.62%) and ERUS (0.60%). Comment!
- Wednesday, March 27, 12:28 PM Emerging markets have been big underperformers in 2013 and outflows from their ETFs (EEM, VWO) have picked up speed in recent days. Single country ETFs are beginning to see spillover, with EWZ and RSX notable for redemption activity of late. Every single one of the top 7 single-country components of the MSCI EM Index (EEM) is down YTD. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, March 22, 12:09 PM Western markets are mostly marking time alongside the events in Cyprus, but emerging market debt continues a downtrend begun some time ago with the EMB hitting an 8-month low today. It's likewise with equities - off more than 5% YTD, EEM, VWO, and DEM are getting smoked by the SPY. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Friday, March 22, 4:29 AM President Obama's historic visit to Israel (which continues through today) appears to have sparked Israeli markets, in the midst of a global sell-off. iShares MSCI Israel (EIS) is +1.03% over the recent 5-day period, with global counterparts trailing behind over the same period: SPY -1.51%, EFA -1.51%, ACWI -1.62%, EEM -3.14%. Comment!
- Tuesday, March 19, 11:01 AM More on the BAML survey: Just 14% of respondents expect the Chinese economy to be stronger a year from now, representing "one of the sharpest falls in this reading in the survey's history." The thinking is behind a shift out of emerging equity markets (EEM. DEM, VWO) and into developed - notably the U.S. and Japan. It also coincides with a sharp correction in Chinese stocks (FXI, CAF) over the last month. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Monday, March 18, 4:57 AM Ron Rowland offers additional highlights on the recently expanded lineup of commission-free ETFs over at Fidelity including the following caveat: Funds not held for 30 days by retail investors or 60 days by RIAs using Fidelity as a custodian will be subject to a $7.95 per-trade commission. Some RIAs have complained that the longer holding period directed at them is unfair. Rowland spells out the full list of affected ETFs here. Comment!
