- Sunday, March 17, 3:47 AM Eurozone finmins have agreed to give Ireland and Portugal more time to repay their bailouts as a reward for their good behavior vis-a-vis austerity. The decision comes after Ireland enjoyed a stunningly successful return to the markets last week with a sale of 10-year debt. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 8:09 AM Wow. Ireland has reportedly drawn drawn €10B in bids for its 10-year note auction, and sold €5B at 240 bps over mid-swaps. The result is far-better than government hopes to sell just €3B in debt. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Breaking News]
- Friday, January 11, 7:25 AM The Irish debt crisis appears to be over ... unless you're an Irishman. A consumer sentiment index plunged to 49.8 in December from 63.8 previously - the fastest fall in a decade - after the government unveiled another round of tax hikes and spending cuts. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Monday, January 7, 10:24 AM Crisis over. Ireland returns to the international bond market, announcing managers for a syndicated tap of its 5.5% 2017 bond, reports Reuters' Jamie McGeever. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, January 1, 11:20 AM On the country ETF dashboard, green all around for 2012 with the exception of Brazil (EWZ -2.5%) and Argentina (ARGT -18.6%). Topping the list were Turkey (TUR +62.3%), Philippines (EPHE +46.6%), Thailand (THD +37.2%), Egypt (EGPT +34.2%) and Ireland (EIRL +32.1%). Comment!
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 11:56 AM More details on iShares' ETF fee hikes: Going to 0.53% from 0.52% (a 1.9% hike) are its Ireland Capped Investable Market Fund (EIRL), Australia Fund (EWA), Canada Fund (EWC), Hong Kong Fund (EWH), Belgium Capped Fund (EWK), Switzerland Fund (EWL), Malaysia Fund (EWM), Netherlands Investable Market Fund (EWN), Spain Fund (EWP), France Fund (EWQ), Singapore Fund (EWS), United Kingdom Fund (EWU), Mexico Investable Market Fund (EWW) and EMU Fund (EZU). 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 8:48 AM Franklin Templeton - led mostly by fund manager Michael Hasenstab - upped its holdings of Irish debt by more than a third in Q3, and now controls nearly a tenth of the entire market. "It's beyond the scale of comprehension in a small periphery-market," says a rival fund manager. Is the 'improvement" in Ireland real, or is it the result of the buys of a well-funded gorilla? (earlier) Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 12:15 PM The warning Ireland could make like Greece and inflict losses on holders of its debt is lifted by Moody's as the country nears returning to the public bond markets. The removal of this warning is likely a precursor to the agency raising Ireland's debt rating out of junk status, says Davy strategist Donal O'Mahony. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, September 20, 2012, 8:28 AM "Ireland faces an almost impossible task to get back to fiscal balance," says Citigroup's Michael Saunders, issuing a warning to those buying into one of the planet's best-performing bond markets this year. Fiscal reform is nice, he says, but "the math becomes difficult" if economic growth doesn't return. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 8:03 AM Remember Ireland? The yield on its 9-year sovereign paper has fallen to its lowest level since October 2010 (before the bailout). Lower than Spain's similar-maturity yield for a couple of weeks, the spread widens a bit more. IRL +8.2% YTD. 6 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 4:07 AM "The only country to show any sign of emerging from the downturn so far this year is Ireland, where output is beginning to increase again due to rising exports," notes Markit in its eurozone PMI report (.pdf). "The brighter picture from Ireland perhaps sends a message that other countries do not necessarily face the inevitability of deepening downturns if competitiveness can be improved..." 2 Comments [Global & FX, Breaking News]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 10:53 AM Irish bonds make a big move lower in yield (higher in price) on back of the Irish referendum result, the country's 2-year note dropping 81 bps to 6.6%. The yield was north of 20% last summer. An interesting case study will be why the Troika medicine seems to be working well in Ireland, but not elsewhere. IRL +8.4% YTD. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 1:03 PM On the eve of the Irish referendum on the EU fiscal compact, a report showing unemployment remaining at 14.3% gives a bit more juice to opponents who dub it "the austerity treaty." Polls, however, continue to show a large majority (60%) favoring the treaty (they have no choice, a "no" vote immediately turns Ireland into Greece). 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 9:40 AM Ireland may need another bailout, reckons Deutsche Bank, as even a small increase in capital requirements for its banks would require the government to pump more money in. Mortgage delinquencies actually hung in there in 2009 and 2010, but rose sharply over the past year; toss in possible easier bankruptcy laws and bank losses could be set to grow. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 7:56 AM Next up Ireland, whose fiscal pact referendum vote is set for May 31. Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams - campaigning for a "No" vote - has seen his party rise to 2nd most popular in the country. "It may not be a rush to the barricades, but there is a slow revolution taking place," "Yes" continues to lead 47%-35%, with 18% undecided. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 12:54 PM "When the economy gets back on track, I am confident supply will be absorbed," says the Mayor of Avila, Spain, where construction continues despite block after block of vacant properties. His attitude embodies the denial in Spain, a sharp contrast to Ireland, where construction halted on a dime in 2008, the banks purged their bad assets, and markets look to be clearing. 5 Comments [Global & FX]
