- Wednesday, March 27, 10:20 AM VMware (VMW +1.2%) rises on a down day after ISI upgrades shares to Strong Buy from Buy. Shares have gradually given back most of the big gains they saw earlier this month due to the strong growth outlook provided on the company's investor day. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 4:44 PM Some enterprise IT names slump in response to Oracle's FQ3 miss, which included a surprising 2% Y/Y drop in new software license/cloud subscription revenue, and a 23% Y/Y drop in hardware product sales. InfiniBand hardware supplier Mellanox (MLNX) is the worst-hit, -7% AH. IBM -1%. HPQ -1%. EMC -1.2%. RHT -1.9%. VMW -1%. TIBX -1.2%. TDC -1%. Archrival SAP is unchanged for now. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Saturday, March 16, 12:06 PM "A retailer (Amazon), an entertainment company (Netflix), an advertiser (Google), a résumé site (LinkedIn), and an address book (Facebook) have ended up shaping the future of [tech] infrastructure," writes a bemused Ashlee Vance. Unsatisfied with the solutions offered by the likes of IBM, HPQ, EMC, NTAP, and ORCL, Web giants have used home-grown hardware and open-source software projects to fulfill their needs. Their ideas and technology are already upending the server industry ... and their impact stands to grow as more companies buy in. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 15, 6:37 PM IBM has recently eyed both Rackspace (RAX) and SoftLayer as buyout targets, a former IBM exec tells GigaOm. Meanwhile, EMC is said to be uninterested in SoftLayer - Reuters reported yesterday both EMC and IBM have been in talks to buy the company. Rackspace (unlike SoftLayer) is a major backer of the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform, which IBM just threw its weight behind. The former exec notes IBM's historical preference to flesh out its product lines via M&A. "IBM does not want to fund its own development because past history shows we’re not very good at it." Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, March 15, 1:53 PM Facebook (FB) workers love Mark Zuckerberg: the founder/CEO of the world's biggest social network has received a 99% approval rating from employees on Glassdoor; that's up from 2012's 85%. SAP co-CEOs Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann, who have been trying to remake the software giant's culture, also come in at 99%. Other tech CEOs receiving high marks include EMC's Joe Tucci (96%), Qualcomm's (QCOM) Paul Jacobs (95%), Google's (GOOG) Larry Page (95%), and Citrix's (CTXS) Mark Templeton (95%). Tim Cook (AAPL) and Jeff Bezos (AMZN) both come in at 93%. 18 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 5:42 PM IBM and EMC are among the companies in the running to buy Web hosting/cloud infrastructure provider SoftLayer Technologies in a deal that could sport a $2B+ price tag, Reuters reports. SoftLayer, locked in fierce competition with Rackspace (RAX) and Amazon, differentiates itself in part by offering hybrid solutions that feature both dedicated and virtual servers. The report comes as IBM targets $7B in 2015 cloud revenue, and EMC subsidiary VMware (VMW) launches a new cloud infrastructure service. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, March 14, 12:26 PM An upgrade to Outerpform from RBC helps VMware (VMW +3%) add to the big gains it saw yesterday thanks to its strong growth outlook and the Pivotal announcement. "A path to accelerating revenues and margin expansion was outlined [at EMC/VMware's investor day], something we had wanted to see before becoming more aggressive on the stock.," writes analyst Matthew Hedberg. Parent EMC (EMC +2%) is also trekking higher. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 13, 5:31 PM An EMC (EMC +1.8%) dividend is a matter of "when," not "if," promises Joe Tucci. Nonetheless, he argues buybacks are a better use of EMC's cash at this time. Some on the Street were hoping for a dividend announcement going into EMC's investor day. Separately, EMC forecast Pivotal will have ~$300M in 2013 sales, and forecast Pivotal's addressable market will grow to $20B from a current $8B over the next 5 years. (slides) (more on EMC) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 1:16 PM EMC (EMC +2.5%) guides during its investor day for 9% annual revenue growth over the next 5 years. The Street is currently expecting 8% growth for both 2013 and 2014. Shares are higher thanks to the guidance, VMware's rally, and the Pivotal announcement. Also: CEO Joe Tucci predicts EMC and Cisco's (CSCO) VCE JV will "far exceed" $1B in revenue this year - John Chambers recently stated VCE, 58%-owned by EMC and 35%-owned by Cisco, is on a $1B+ run rate. Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, March 13, 11:58 AM More on VMware: An aggressive long-term growth forecast is helping shares rally. VMware (VMW +8.4%), currently expected by the Street to post 15% revenue growth this year and next, is forecasting 15%-20% annual growth from 2014-2016, as its efforts to expand its cloud/data center management and software-defined networking offerings bear fruit. VMware has slightly lowered its 2013 revenue guidance to account for the divesting of assets going into the Pivotal Initiative. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, March 13, 10:05 AM In addition to the Pivotal announcement, VMware is: 1) Outlining plans to integrate the networking virtualization software found in its giant vCloud Suite with Nicira's software-defined networking platform. An integrated product called NSX will launch in 2H. EMC partner Cisco (CSCO) can't be thrilled. 2) Confirming the launch (previous) of a cloud infrastructure service that allows clients to gradually move private workloads to a VMware-run public cloud, while jointly managing the two. Called vCloud Hybrid Service, the business will be run by former Savvis president Bill Fathers. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 9:47 AM EMC (EMC +1.1%) and VMware's (VMW +5.6%) Pivotal Initiative will be taken public, EMC CEO Joe Tucci discloses during the companies' investor day (webcast). EMC will own 69% of the spinoff, and VMware 31%. Pivotal is headlined by EMC's Greenplum analytics database/hardware unit, but also features a slew of other product lines aimed at companies working on big data projects or developing Web/cloud apps. Given the hype surrounding Pivotal's addressable markets, the post-IPO valuation could be huge. 7 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 10:32 AM EMC (EMC +0.9%) and VMware (VMW +0.7%) trade higher after Longbow starts coverage on EMC with a Buy and $30 PT. Longbow's launch offsets a critical report from Bernstein: the firm notes EMC shares have a historical correlation with VMware's, and thinks VMware's challenges could affect EMC's performance. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 8, 6:37 PM EMC's flash storage refresh is more bark than bite, argues Wikibon CTO David Floyer. General availability for EMC's XtremIO flash storage system isn't expected until the summer of 2014 (EMC offers "directed availability" for now), and its XtremSF server flash cards only support the caching/reading of data found on external storage - by comparison, cards from Fusion-io (FIO) and others also support data writes, allowing them to run databases and Web/cloud services. Floyer's takeaway: EMC is still trying to protect sales of its high-end Symmetrix VMAX systems. Update: Floyer responds by stating EMC's XtremSF server flash cards do indeed support full read/write capabilities - a Silicon Angle article discussing his views had indicated otherwise. He also predicts EMC's XtremIO systems "will probably become the leading flash-only array product in the marketplace." 10 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 6, 11:19 AM EMC's (EMC +1.5%) could be open to issuing a dividend, says Stifel, which is reiterating a Buy - the company is easily the biggest enterprise IT name not to offer one. Stifel also sees EMC's March 13 Strategic Forum, where the company is likely to share its product plans, as a possible catalyst. EMC announced a big revamp for its flash storage lineup yesterday. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 2:52 PM EMC gives its flash storage lineup an overhaul, with a big assist from 2012 acquisition XtremIO. The storage giant's new XtremSF server flash cards aim to directly take on Fusion-io (FIO); they work in tandem with EMC's XtremSW Cache (formerly VFCache) server caching software, and (according to EMC, anyway) have a major edge in performance and CPU utilization. Also launched is a new XtremIO flash system that's able to linearly scale performance. Going forward, EMC plans to launch the XtremSW Suite, a device-independent flash caching platform.
