- Tuesday, March 5, 2:52 PM EMC gives its flash storage lineup an overhaul, with a big assist from 2012 acquisition XtremIO. The storage giant's new XtremSF server flash cards aim to directly take on Fusion-io (FIO); they work in tandem with EMC's XtremSW Cache (formerly VFCache) server caching software, and (according to EMC, anyway) have a major edge in performance and CPU utilization. Also launched is a new XtremIO flash system that's able to linearly scale performance. Going forward, EMC plans to launch the XtremSW Suite, a device-independent flash caching platform. - Tuesday, February 26, 12:36 PM EMC's Greenplum unit adds to its big data product arsenal by launching a home-grown version of the Hadoop software framework, widely used in big data projects. The product, called Pivotal HD, competes with offerings from fast-growing startup Cloudera. EMC argues Pivotal HD is differentiated by its scalability, response times, and ability to integrate with business intelligence apps and Greenplum's database software. Greenplum is one of the businesses comprising EMC and VMware's (VMW) Pivotal Initiative. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 2:58 PM Pac Crest is showing rivals VMware (VMW +1.2%) and Citrix (CTXS +1.6%) some love: the firm argues VMware's Horizon PC virtualization/mobile management suite will be a 2013 growth driver, and that Citrix can beat 2013 estimates with the help of strong enterprise mobility spending. VMware just announced the Q1 availability of Horizon, which competes with Citrix's XenDesktop. Citrix, meanwhile, just announced a mobile software bundle that fuses Zenprise's device management software with its CloudGateway platform for remote mobile app/data access. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 11:25 AM On its FQ2 call, Cisco (CSCO) boasted its VCE JV - 58%-owned by EMC, 35%-owned by Cisco - is now on a $1B+ run rate. But as ZDNet's Larry Dignan observes, Cisco and EMC's latest 10-Qs (I, II) indicate the JV has generated huge losses since its '09 inception. EMC claims a $430M cumulative loss for its stake in VCE, and Cisco a $325M loss. Last year, Gartner estimated VCE generated $222.9M in sales (+53% Y/Y) in Q2 '12 for its costly Vblock server/storage/networking systems. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 14, 12:59 PM More on NetApp: The company also disclosed the acquisition of ionGrid, a developer of iOS apps that enable secure access to corporate files. The purchase is off the beaten path for NetApp, which typically doesn't sell apps for client devices. But archrival EMC is making a push in this space, courtesy of online/mobile file-syncing platform Syncplicity. Also, EMC-controlled VMware (like other major IT software names) offers mobile file-sharing tools, via its Horizon Suite. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 14, 12:46 PM NetApp (NTAP -1.7%) is lower after beating FQ3 estimates and issuing in-line FQ4 revenue guidance. FQ3 product gross margin fell 50 bps Q/Q to 53.1% (services margin rose), OEM revenue (much of it involves IBM) fell 17% Y/Y, and management noted it's seeing a mix shift towards "low-end platforms." However, shipments of high-end clustered systems rose 70% Q/Q, and bookings for systems with flash memory rose 67%. Piper thinks share losses to EMC are narrowing - on the call, a Credit Suisse analyst seemed worried about market share trends. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 13, 6:05 PM More from Cisco's (CSCO) call: FQ2 router sales -6% Y/Y, partly blamed on lumpy service provider orders. Switches were better, +3%. Service provider video (-1% exc. NDS) and security (+1%) were ho-hum, and collaboration (-11%) remains weak. Data center (UCS server) sales soared 65%. Wi-Fi was strong (+27%), but growth slowed from FQ1's +38%. Services +10% and still growing as a % of sales. Americas orders +2% (enterprise strength, federal weakness) and Asia-Pac +3%, but EMEA -6%. Cisco and EMC's VCE JV is on a $1B+ run rate. Shares -1.8% AH. (FQ1 data) (earlier) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Monday, February 11, 4:31 PM VMware (VMW -2.7%) is acquiring Virsto, developer of software that significantly improves storage performance for systems running virtualization software, both from VMware and others. Virsto also enables more efficient storage use through its support for thin provisioning tech. The purchase is the latest in a string of acquisitions (I, II, III) VMware has made as it tries to evolve into an IT infrastructure management leader. Terms aren't disclosed; look for VMware to integrate Virsto's solutions with those of parent EMC. (earlier) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, February 11, 1:09 PM VMware (VMW -2.5%) slides after Barron's suggests shares could fall another 20%+ on top of their post-earnings bludgeoning. The paper notes revenue growth has steadily decelerated over the last several years thanks to a saturating virtualization software market, and argues a forward P/E of 25 means shares are still expensive (ed: thanks to deferred revenue, VMware's price/free cash flow multiple is lower). The decline comes in spite of an upgrade to Overweight from Evercore. EMC -1.2%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 5, 11:29 AM Coming off a quarter where its non-mainframe server sales fell considerably, IBM (IBM) is expanding its integrated PureSystems line, and moving its Power server line downmarket. New offerings include: 1) The PureData System for Analytics (competes with big data/analytics systems from Oracle, EMC, and Teradata). 2) The PureApplication System, meant for cloud app deployments. 3) Power servers starting at less than $6K. 4) High-end PowerLinux servers for analytics apps. 5) A performance boost for the expensive and share-losing XIV storage line. Comment! [Tech]
- Sunday, February 3, 2:14 PM VMware's (VMW) restructuring, which includes plans to eliminate non-core products, stems from its wish "to go back to the basics of infrastructure and not the whole stack," says VC Bipul Sinha. The announcement follows VMWare and EMC's Pivotal spinoff, and leaves VMware focused on virtualization and data center/cloud management software. There's a logic to this strategy: sales of the comprehensive vCloud Suite (competes in some way with Microsoft, Amazon, Red Hat, Citrix, and OpenStack) are taking off, with customers such as AT&T singing its praises. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 30, 1:53 PM After getting clocked yesterday thanks to downbeat guidance from the company itself and VMware, EMC (EMC +2.6%) is rebounding with the help of an upgrade to buy from Monness Crespi. The rally comes as EMC introduces a refresh for its Greenplum Data Computing Appliance, often used in big data projects. The update includes major performance gains, Isilon storage integration, and joint support for Greenplum's database and the Hadoop analytics framework. Also, EMC's RSA unit is rolling out new security analytics software. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 11:40 AM VMware (VMW -20.2%) has been hit by 7 downgrades in response to its poor Q1/2013 guidance. VMware's soft transactional (individual license) sales "will raise questions about the appetite for SMB customers to expand their virtualization footprint," says Goldman, which has removed shares from its Conviction Buy list. However, the firm has "yet to pick up on any material changes in the competitive landscape" in this segment. "We'd buy the shares after the smoke clears," says Oppenheimer, viewing guidance as conservative. (also) (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 9:55 AM More on EMC: The company expects 2013 revenue of $23.5B and EPS of $1.85, below a consensus of $23.6B and $1.90. $1B in buybacks expected. Along with VMware's restructuring, EMC plans a $75M restructuring of its own. Q4 high-end storage sales +6% Y/Y (+5% in Q3), mid-range +5% (flat in Q3). Greenplum and flash hardware strong. Total storage product sales +5%, services +8% (-1% and +11% prior). $290M in shares repurchased, $168M spent on VMware shares. 2012 free cash flow was $5.02B, above net income of $3.76B. EMC -6.6%. (PR) (slides) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 6:57 AM EMC (EMC): Q4 EPS of $0.54 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $6.03B beats by $0.05B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]
