- Monday, January 28, 11:07 PM VMware's (VMW) weak Q1 guidance sparked an AH selloff in enterprise IT names. CTXS -3.1%. RHT -2.2%. CRM -1.2%. WDAY -1.3%. FFIV -1.3%. NTAP -2.4%.The guidance comes amidst concerns the virtualization software market is becoming saturated, and that Microsoft's free Hyper-V platform is proving a tough competitor. On the earnings call, VMware boasted of strong vCloud sales, but added it's seeing soft demand in the U.S and remains worried about Europe. Headcount is expected to grow by 1K in 2013 in spite of the job cuts. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]

Shares -13% AH; EMC, majority owners of VMW, -4.7%. 6 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 24, 2:35 PM VMware (VMW) furthers its data center/cloud management ambitions by investing $30M and forming a partnership with Puppet Labs, a developer of software that automates a variety of management tasks for IT admins. Puppet's tools complement those of cloud automation vendor DynamicOps, which VMware acquired in July. Unlike VMware's traditional vCloud offerings, both DynamicOps and Puppet can manage non-VMware virtualization environments. (August launches: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 23, 10:09 AM Deutsche Bank's David Bianco lists his 30 favorite big-cap stocks, each with a P-E ratio on 2013 EPS below 18 and EPS growth above 5%: DD, APD, MSFT, INTC, IBM, ACN, GOOG, APH, EMC, AAPL, QCOM, ITW, ROK, UTX, HON, GD, ALL, C, USB, PNC, SLB, HAL, CAM, BHI, LYB, DIS, VIAB, NWSA, CBS, MCD. 10 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, January 18, 6:49 PM ~85% of enterprise server workloads are targets for being virtualized and 60-70% will be virtualized by year's end, estimates Craig-Hallum. That leads it to think demand for VMware's (VMW) vSphere virtualization platform could slow down this year. CH also believes Microsoft's free Hyper-V platform is now good enough for 90% of workloads, something that will lead to price pressure. However, the fact vSphere workloads can only be moved onto other servers running and managed by VMware's software acts as a switching cost. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 16, 2:03 PM VMware (VMW -1%) CTO and long-time employee Steve Herrod has resigned to become a partner at VC firm General Catalyst; he'll remain with the company for now in an advisory role. VMware and parent EMC saw a big executive shakeup last year. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 14, 9:24 AM "Within tech, we think that prospects of a potential bottoming in consensus estimates are improving ... relative safe haven stocks could be used as a source of funds," writes JPMorgan's Mark Moskowitz, explaining why he's downgrading EMC (EMC -1%) and IBM (IBM -1%) while upgrading H-P (HPQ +1.6%) and Fusion-io (FIO +6.1%). Apple and NetApp are his top large-cap picks, and Fusion-io, which he argues continues to "hold the pole position in server-side data acceleration," is his top small/mid-cap pick. EMC has already seen a raft of negative sell-side notes. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, January 14, 7:18 AM Hewlett Packard (HPQ) is upgraded to Hold at JPMorgan with price target raised to $21 from $15. Shares +2.6% premarket. At the same time, the analysts cut EMC to a hold. Shares -0.8%. The busy desk also upgrades Fusion-io (FIO) to a Buy. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 10, 12:15 PM EMC (EMC -1.5%) catches another downgrade, this time from Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty. "While C4Q turned out to be challenging for hardware in general, our channel checks suggest storage experienced the largest negative change," she writes, while lowering her rating to Equal-weight. BlueFin Research is slightly more positive, stating its reseller/distributor contacts mostly believe EMC booked enough in Q4 to meet estimates in spite of some deal slippage. William Blair, Craig-Hallum, and Oppenheimer have all issued downbeat notes recently. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 8, 2:45 PM EMC (EMC -1.5%) has acquired iWave, a developer of software that automates the provisioning of storage systems and private clouds, iWave's CEO discloses. Both EMC proper and VMware have been investing heavily in IT hardware/cloud automation solutions, and the fact iWave already had a reseller deal with EMC should simplify product integration. Red Hat, Citrix, and Microsoft have also been growing their presence in this space. (also) (William Blair downgrade) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, January 8, 11:15 AM More on William Blair's downgrade of EMC (EMC -2.2%): Analyst Jason Ader says checks indicate EMC had trouble closing deals with large companies in Q4, something that will likely lead results to be in-line or below consensus. He's also worried about the threat posed by newer, more efficient technologies - many Internet/cloud companies have been eschewing traditional storage gear in favor of flash storage and commodity hardware. Oppenheimer and Craig-Hallum expressed concerns about EMC last week. NTAP -3.9%. BRCD -2%. ELX -1.8%. QLGC -1.7%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
