- Monday, December 24, 2012, 10:23 AM Microsoft (MSFT), EMC, Expedia (EXPE), and Terex (TEX) all generate free cash flow well in excess of their earnings, notes Barron's, something it thinks value investors should give heed to. Microsoft trades at 9.6x estimated EPS for its current fiscal year, but just 7.9x FCF. For EMC, the multiples are 15.1x and 11.5x; for Expedia, 19.2x and 15.2x; and for Terex, 13.3x and 6.9x. Also, though by no means a value play, Red Hat (RHT) trades at 23x next year's FCF, compared with 40x EPS. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 5:54 PM Dell (DELL) continues its software acquisition spree, reaching a deal to buy data protection software provider Credant for an undisclosed sum. Credant's products encrypt and control access to data for PCs, mobile devices, and flash drives, among other things. The purchase meshes with Dell's acquisition of firewall/security software vendor SonicWALL. Credant competes with Symantec and EMC's RSA Security unit. (PR) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 9:40 AM H-P (HPQ -0.6%) opens lower after Topeka's Brian White, best known for praising all things Apple, downgrades shares to Sell in response to their rally. H-P's product line issues, a weak IT spending environment, and Cisco and EMC's ambitions to become broader IT solutions providers are named as concerns. White also notes H-P's European exposure (EMEA was 36% of FQ4 sales), and says his firm believes "IT spending in the region has deteriorated further over the past few weeks." (yesterday) 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 9:50 AM EMC (EMC -1.2%) ticks lower after JPMorgan removes it from its Analyst Focus List. EMC was added to the list (and upgraded to Overweight) back in January, with JPM citing the potential for mid-range share gains (possibly at NetApp's expense) following a product refresh. IDC's latest figures suggest EMC has picked up some share. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 2:28 PM EMC has announced a big refresh for its Atmos cloud storage line. A new system is the first in the line to support Intel x86 CPUs, and the software Atmos hardware runs on has been upgraded to support linking with Amazon's S3 cloud storage service. Enterprises looking to support cloud storage could embrace Atmos, which is also available as software interacting with regular EMC gear. But major Internet companies have been opting for some combo of cheaper hardware and flash memory solutions. (May refresh) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 6:09 PM Aided by a big product refresh, EMC's storage system share grew 150 bps Y/Y in Q3 to 30%, estimates IDC. Whereas NetApp's (NTAP) share fell 30 bps to 11.9%, IBM's 110 bps to 11.7%, and H-P's (HPQ) 150 bps to 9.7%. Industry sales rose 3.3% - nothing special, but better than what the server and networking industries are doing. H-P is counting on new hardware and price cuts from its fast-growing 3PAR unit to lift growth; NetApp has also been busy updating its lineup. (Q2 figures) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 12:44 PM EMC and VMware (VMW) have made their rumored spinoff official. Called the Pivotal Initiative, VMware says it will feature not only the Greenplum, Cloud Foundry, SpringSource, and Gemstone units, as has been reported, but also EMC's Pivotal Labs Web/mobile software development tool business, and VMware's Cetas big data analytics software unit. As expected, ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz will be in charge. Virtually anything offered by VMware/EMC that's aimed at Web/cloud developers or big data projects is in the mix. If an IPO happens in the future, it could be a big one. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 5:55 PM Ahead of a rumored spinoff involving its Greenplum database/analytics unit, EMC has acquired More IT Resources, a developer of database/system resource performance monitoring software, for a reported $10M-$20M. EMC declares More IT's ability to optimize resource allocation in real-time "revolutionary," and says the company will be integrated with Greenplum immediately. Greenplum has been growing quickly, but also faces competition from Oracle, IBM, H-P and others. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 3:55 PM TechCrunch backs up this week's GigaOm report (I, II) about VMware (VMW) combining three non-core businesses servicing Web/cloud app developers with EMC's Greenplum database and analytics hardware/software arm, whose products are often used in big data projects. Like GigaOm, TechCrunch claims ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz will head the new unit, while adding about 1K VMware employees will be working for him. An announcement is expected next week. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 3:27 PM More on VMware/EMC: Paul Maritz, who went from being VMware's CEO to EMC's Chief Strategist in a July shakeup, will reportedly "play a key role" in the spinoff. VMWare is hoping to re-focus on its core virtualization and management software ops, where license growth has slowed and intense competition is provided by Microsoft and Citrix, while giving the spinoff units the attention they need. The spinoff could yield a lucrative IPO down the line, given the Street's love of all things cloud and big data. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 2:47 PM VMware (VMW -0.4%) temporarily spiked on a GigaOm report the company is set to spin off its Cloud Foundry app development platform, as well as its GemStone and SpringSource units (both provide tools for Web/cloud developers) to a unit owned by parent EMC. The unit is unnamed, but a July report about a spinoff mentioned the Greenplum analytics/database software division. Sources claim the spinoff will be announced next week. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:16 PM Gartner forecasts global enterprise IT spending will rise 2.5% next year to $2.68T. Investors should be aware these estimates get revised frequently - 4 months after hiking its 2012 IT spending growth forecast to 3%, Gartner claims 2012 will only see "scant overall growth" due to macro issues that have clearly pressured (I, II) many enterprise IT names. Decent IT spending growth from financial services, telecom, and media companies is expected to offset continued government weakness. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 6:45 PM More from Dell's FQ3 call and slides: Large enterprises (-8% Y/Y, +5% for enterprise solutions) are said to be deferring discretionary IT purchases; that's backed up by October's earnings reports. Dell was a little more positive about SMBs (-1%, +15% for ES). Sales of DCS servers, used by Internet companies for "scale-out" deployments, rose 126% Y/Y. Networking +40%, boosted by Force10. More than one analyst suggested a big change is needed in PC strategy: cost cuts, price cuts (to maintain scale), and a retreat from the consumer market were among the suggestions. 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 12:05 PM Raymond James has upgraded NetApp (NTAP +10.6%) to Outperform following yesterday's FQ2 beat (I, II): the firm expects growth to pick up thanks to product refreshes, new partnerships, and stronger flash memory integration. Goldman sees the report as evidence enterprise IT spending is stabilizing after a tough Q3, though it likes EMC (EMC +0.2%) better. During its earnings call, NetApp mentioned it saw a 20% Y/Y increase in $1M+ deals; the company is trying to boost its high-end presence with the help of new clustering capabilities. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 4:31 PM More on NetApp's FQ2: Shares benefiting from low expectations. Product sales -2% Y/Y (about even with EMC's storage growth), software updates/maintenance +11%, services +12%. Americas flat Y/Y, EMEA +2%, Asia-Pac +14%. Diluted shares fell by 3M Q/Q (boosted EPS). Free cash flow of $269M well above net income of $189M. Gross margin was 60.6%, up 30 bps Q/Q and down 130 bps Y/Y. Opex +8% Y/Y, exceeding revenue growth. Deferred revenue flat Q/Q at $2.77B. NTAP +9.9% AH. EMC +1.5%. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) (supplemental comments) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 7:04 PM A few more details from Cisco's (CSCO) FQ1 call: Analysts were surprised by Cisco's light FQ2 gross margin guidance, in light of FQ1's margin strength. Cisco attributed the guidance to a mix shift and noted its UCS server line, which carries relatively low margins, is growing rapidly. John Chambers claimed Cisco is competing better with Huawei (still a concern for many) than it was 12-18 months ago. He reaffirmed Cisco's strained partnership with EMC/VMware, but added Cisco plans to form closer ties with EMC rivals such as NetApp, Red Hat, and Microsoft. Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
