- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 9:33 AM Juniper (JNPR +9.2%) soars on a slightly old rumor it has hired JPMorgan to help find a buyer, and that one bid is reportedly in the mid-to-high $20s. EMC, long rumored to be thinking about acquiring a networking vendor as its partnership with Cisco frays, is named as a potentially interested party. Juniper (current market cap of $9.7B) wouldn't be an easy fish for EMC (current market cap of $53.8B) to digest, especially after baking in a premium. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 10:14 AM Enterprise IT stocks slump following IBM's (IBM -3.7%) Q3 revenue miss, which had much to do with drops in mainframe, storage, and middleware sales. Earnings call remarks about weak September demand aren't helping either, though some might be encouraged IBM's Chinese sales rose 19% Y/Y at a time when others (I, II) are seeing Chinese demand slump. EMC (EMC -1.5%), VMware (VMW -1.9%), Citrix (CTXS -2.2%), Red Hat (RHT -1.7%), and Tibco (TIBX -3.6%) are among the losers. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 10:02 AM EMC has named John Roese, most recently Huawei's North American R&D chief, its new CTO. Roese replaces Jeff Nick, who has been "transitioned to a new CTO role" in support of Chief Strategist and ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz. EMC and VMware (VMW) saw a major executive shakeup in July. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, September 24, 2012, 1:48 PM IBM has acquired Butterfly Software, a U.K.-based provider of data analysis and migration software, for an undisclosed sum. The purchase should help IBM better compete with EMC and Symantec, each of whom offer an extensive array of data migration/replication solutions. IBM's Tivoli storage software business posted double-digit Y/Y growth in Q2, even as storage hardware sales fell 4%. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 12:27 PM EMC (EMC +1.8%) outperforms a bit after Jefferies' Peter Misek starts coverage with a Buy and praises the storage giant's product line. EMC is benefiting from quality flash storage solutions and a recent high-end refresh, Misek argues, and it's Isilon unit should continue gaining share in the growing NAS segment thanks to new hardware that will result in broader enterprise interest. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 11:30 AM EMC is picking up share in both storage hardware and software. IDC estimates EMC's share of the external disk storage market rose 180 bps Y/Y in Q2 to 30.4%, and that its software growth of 7.4% outpaced the 0.9% growth seen by the overall market. NetApp's (NTAP) external storage share fell 70 bps to 12.1%, though that's an improvement from recent figures. CommVault's (CVLT) software sales rose 21.4%, as the company continues to gain share in the backup software market. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, September 6, 2012, 5:55 PM EMC discloses CEO Joe Tucci will remain at the company until Feb. 2015. Prior to that time, he'll step down as CEO, and transition to solely being chairman of EMC and 80%-owned VMware (VMW). Tucci, 65, recently cancelled plans to retire at an earlier date. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 2:01 PM EMC has begun showing off Project X, a flash memory-based storage system developed by recently-acquired XtremIO. Project X, due to begin shipping in early 2013, contains an advanced software feature set that includes thin provisioning, deduplication, and VMware API support. The hardware arrives as IBM digests flash storage vendor Texas Memory, and speculation swirls that NetApp, H-P, or Dell will make a bid for one of the remaining independent vendors, such as Violin Memory or Nimbus. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 1:27 PM EMC was reportedly the lead investor in a $38M funding round for Zscaler, a rapidly growing provider of cloud-based security services that monitor corporate Web traffic. EMC execs have repeatedly expressed their interest in buying security firms, as the company tries to lower its exposure to a slow-growing storage hardware business. An Akamai (AKAM) exec recently named Zscaler as the kind of startup his company might want to buy. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 11:45 AM Deutsche's Brian Modoff is encouraged by the expansion of Cisco's (CSCO) partnership with VMware (VMW): he thinks the tie-up demonstrates VMware's networking virtualization solutions (courtesy of Nicira) won't fully eliminate the value-add delivered by Cisco's switches and routers, as many have feared. He also sees VMware's new cloud management solutions and related partnership with F5 (FFIV) creating a barrier to entry for F5's application delivery controllers. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 5:57 PM Announced on day 2 of VMware's (VMW) VMworld conference: 1) The Horizon Suite, a set of VMware mobile software tools for managing enterprise apps/data (previous). 2) New reference architectures and proclamations of loyalty from Cisco (CSCO) and EMC related to their VCE JV, no doubt meant to calm customers reading the news. 3) The addition of data deduplication tech and stronger VMware integration for EMC's VFCache server flash modules, which compete with FIO's solutions. (Day 1: I, II, III) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 5:14 PM Some notable partnerships announced on the first day of VMware's (VMW) VMworld conference: 1) Cisco (CSCO), in spite of tensions with VMware, will be making "joint engineering investments" with the company, and will integrate its switches and servers with VMware's virtualization and management software. 2) Parent EMC's Avamar data protection software will be bundled with VMware's virtualization software - that's a potential negative for SYMC and CVLT. (other partnerships: I, II, III, IV) (earlier: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 1:26 PM More on VMware: The company is also announcing new storage and security-related virtualization solutions for SMBs, a relatively under-penetrated market, and a partnership with Intel related to the latter's Trusted Execution security tech. Also, in the latest sign of its willingness to support open platforms (in spite of selling the proprietary vCloud), VMware is now supporting the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform, backed by Rackspace (RAX) and many IT giants. Recent acquisitions Nicira and DynamicOps are both OpenStack backers. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, August 27, 2012, 1:07 PM In tandem with the start of its VMworld conference, VMware (VMW -0.2%) is introducing upgrades to its vSphere virtualization platform and vCloud cloud management suite. vSphere, which has ditched a DRAM-based license fee structure that gave rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and Citrix (CTXS) an opening, now includes more advanced networking and data protection capabilities, and vCloud now promises the ability to provision "virtual data centers" featuring thousands of virtual servers. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, August 24, 2012, 2:17 PM NetApp (NTAP +4.2%) has gradually moved higher after Reuters reported Cisco (CSCO) has discussed buying a storage rival to current JV partner EMC. Interestingly, EMC (EMC +2.5%), is also catching a bid today. NetApp's low valuation and enterprise storage clout have often made it the subject of M&A speculation, but the company's $12.8B market cap and likely demand for a decent premium would make it tough even for Cisco to digest the company. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 7:00 PM Though the companies keep saying the right words, Cisco's (CSCO) partnership with EMC is fraying, sources tell Reuters. The companies' VCE JV hasn't turned a profit, and Cisco has reportedly discussed acquiring an EMC storage rival (ed: Are they looking at NetApp? Or a startup such as Nutanix?). EMC, meanwhile, has thought of buying or partnering with a Cisco networking rival Also, Cisco had a $750M deal to acquire startup and long-term threat Nicira, only to see EMC's VMware (VMW) outbid them. 3 Comments [Tech]
