Please let them bide their time until they "graduate" from Congress into that multi-million dollar position as a lobbyist. Our expectation level for our "representatives" is so low ... all we hope for is they offset each other; that's what is has come to.
Estimating Future Dividend Growth

Estimating future dividend growth is difficult if not impossible. Companies which might have had a long history of consistent double digit increases might stop raising dividends and might even cut them. It is easy to predict whether or not a company’s dividend is sustainable in the short run, by evaluating EPS trends, dividend payout ratios and cash flows. It is difficult to forecast however whether the dividend won’t be cut several years down the road.

Financial companies such as Bank of America (BAC) and US Bancorp (USB) are two prime examples of this. After raising distributions for several decades, and always spotting above average dividend yields, the companies had to cut dividends amidst the global financial crisis of 2007-2009.

The transaction is worth $44B, including $10B in outstanding debt. Here's what Warren Buffett had to say: "Our country's future prosperity depends on its having an efficient and well-maintained rail system. Conversely, America must grow and prosper for railroads to do well. Berkshire's $34B investment in BNI is a huge bet on that company, CEO Matt Rose and his team, and the railroad industry. Most important of all, however, it's an all-in wager on the economic future of the U.S. I love these bets."

Stocks slide; futures fall. Global stock markets painted a gloomy picture Tuesday, with bourses in Asia and Europe taking 2%-plus losses as risk appetite took a breather and investors clamored for safe-haven assets, sending the dollar and U.S. Treasurys climbing and futures tumbling (see data below in Today's Markets). "The basis for the correction seems to rest on three legs," Merrill economist Bill O'Neill said. "Worries over prospects for holders of equity in banks; concern that interest-rate hikes are imminent; and paradoxically, that recovery in 2010 will be crippled by a U.S. consumer unwilling or unable to open his or her wallet." Others took the recent downturn as a sign equity prices had gotten ahead of real improvements in the economy.

Stanley, B&D craft $8.4B merger. Stanley Works (SWK) agreed to buy rival Black & Decker (BDK) for $4.5B in stock, the culmination of a courtship that spanned 27 years and three other attempts. The bid values B&D at about $57.57/share, a 22% premium to Monday's close. "The more we talked, the more we felt like these were two very complementary and unique companies," BDK CEO Nolan Archibald said, adding both CEOs were "totally swayed" by potential synergies of $350M. Stanley shareholders will own about 50.5% of the combined company; B&D shareholders will get 49.5%.

Lloyds, RBS diverge on aid. Lloyds (LYG) and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) unveiled agreements with the U.K. Treasury over their participation in its program to insure toxic assets, and detailed the divestments they will need to make to satisfy EU regulators. Lloyds opted out of the expensive U.K. asset-protection scheme, saying it would raise £21B, including a £13.5B rights issue; the government will maintain its 43% stake in the bank. The move subjects Lloyds to more modest EU demands: Lloyds said it will dispose of "a retail banking business" with a 4.6% market share and about 19% of its mortgage portfolio; sell £180B in noncore assets; and limit acquisitions over the next 3-4 years. RBS will enter the asset-protection scheme to insure £282B of its illiquid loans, with the first £60B in losses borne by RBS. UBS posted a fourth straight quarterly loss of 564M francs (-$552M), worse than the 207M loss expected by the Street. Total client outflows rose to 36.6B francs ($35.8B), led by a doubling of outflows at its Americas wealth-management division. On a media call, CFO John Cryan cited UBS's "residual reputational issue" along with "some morale issues among advisers" that it needs to face, and said UBS expects "modest outflows from Swiss clients until we return to profit."

EU sees gradual recovery. The EU lifted its 2010-2011 growth forecast to 0.75% and 1.5% respectively, but cautioned its outlook is "highly uncertain" given that "significant fiscal and monetary policy measures" are supporting the recovery. There lies another problem however.

Most younger investors tend to ignore dividend stocks, which typically are mature, slower growing companies with dependable cashflows a portion of which are distributed back to investors. Younger investors view these dependable income stocks as boring and too slow moving, which don’t have anything better to do with their cashflows but send them back to owners in the form of dividends. Instead these investors prefer investing in growth stocks with high price earnings ratios and high expectations for growth. While most companies that distribute a portion of their profits in the form of dividends realize that double-digit growth cannot last forever, most growth stocks sell at rich valuations, supported by analysts who have perfected the art of predicting high growth rates for decades to come. As soon as the music stops, these growths stocks stumble, dragging investors' fortunes with them.

Sentiment

Stocks are holding gains, amid strength in some commodities and optimism for the third quarter earnings reporting period. Many of the energy, metals, and mining names saw gains after crude oil rose 55 cents to $70.96 a barrel and gold rallied $20 to $1037.80 an ounce. Meanwhile, Alcoa (AA) is up 3.4 percent to $13.88 and the best gainer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average ahead of earnings. Alcoa unofficially kicks off the earnings reporting season tomorrow after the closing bell.

With no economic data on the calendar, investors don't have much other news to work with Tuesday and the bullish underlying tone from Monday's session seems to have carried forward to Tuesday's trading. The Dow is up 100 points heading into the final hour. The CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX) slipped .95 to 25.89. Trading in the options market is much more active than Monday, with approximately 5.13 million puts and 7.80 million calls traded so far (a ratio of .66, compared to a 22-day average of .79).

While the market has enjoyed impressive gains ever since it hit a multi year low in March 2009, investors are beginning to get nervous about valuation. If valuation is too high, chances are that investors are overpaying for stocks purchased, which could lead to lower performance over time.

Luckily however, the rally off of March lows has been led by speculative names from the financial sector. Most of the high quality names that dividend investors follow, such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) or Pepsi Cola (PEP), have mainly followed the market higher in its ascent. If we were truly in a new bull market however, then we should expect that most investors would switch to quality blue chip companies. Another positive part is that stock prices are still lower, in comparison to their levels in September 2008.
