- Wednesday, April 24, 11:59 AM Even as many telecom equipment makers slump due to AT&T's capex cuts, Ericsson (ERIC +4.1%) is up after beating Q1 EPS estimates and providing upbeat commentary. Sales only rose 2% Y/Y - hardware +3%, global services +4%, support solutions (a relatively small business) -19% - and gross margin fell 130 bps Y/Y to 32%, something Ericsson attributes to projects that are initially low-margin. But in remarks that have to please those who see Ericsson as a mobile data traffic play, the company says it will see a higher mix of "capacity projects" in 2H. Rivals Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +2.3%) and Nokia (NOK +1.4%) are also higher, though a rally in European equities could be playing a role. (PR/slides) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 24, 5:41 AM LM Ericsson (ERIC): Q1 EPS of SEK0.99 beats by SEK0.06. Revenue of SEK52B (+2% Y/Y). (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Thursday, January 31, 10:32 AM Ericsson (ERIC +9.9%) has surged to new 52-week highs after trouncing Q4 estimates thanks to very strong North American demand (fueled by LTE buildouts from U.S. carriers). The mobile infrastructure leader also saw healthy Japanese demand and 19 new contracts for its Smart Services Routers, which handle both mobile and wireline traffic. China (declining 2G orders) and India (low investment activity) were relatively soft. Alcatel-Lucent (ALU +5.8%) is up in sympathy. (PR - .pdf) 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 31, 9:48 AM Down AH yesterday following mixed Q4 results and light Q1 guidance, STMicroelectronics (STM +5.8%) is making new 52-week highs this morning. A 16% Y/Y increase in analog, MEMS, and microcontroller sales could be going over well. On the other hand, Digital (consumer electronics) and Wireless (dominated by ST-Ericsson) respectively fell 18% and 14%. Moreover, ST-Ericsson "anticipates a very significant sequential decrease in net sales" for Q1, and STM expects to spend $300M-$500M to exit the failed basbeband chip JV. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, January 31, 2:57 AM Ericsson (ERIC): Q4 net loss 6.26B ($986M) krona vs profit of 1.49B krona a year earlier, due to an already announced 8B krona writedown of ST-Ericsson chip JV. EBIT +17% to 4.8B krona vs consensus of 4.3B krona. Revenue +5% to 66.94B krona, boosted by 51% jump in North America. Gross margin rises to 31.1% from 30.2% vs forecasts of 30.8%. Expects improved profitability in H2 as it focuses on increasing high-margin sales. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]

- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 1:59 PM Ceragon (CRNT -23.6%) is making multi-year lows after missing Q3 estimates and guiding on its earnings call for Q4 revenue of $104M-$110M, below a $121.3M consensus. The mobile backhaul equipment vendor mentioned negotiations with carriers are taking longer, and 2013 budgets are receiving more scrutiny. It's launching a restructuring program it hopes will lower opex by 11%. Peers DragonWave (DRWI -2.4%) and Aviat (AVNW -2.9%) are also lower. Plenty of other names are suffering (I, II) due to weak telecom capex. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 3:21 AM Ericsson (ERIC): Q3 net profit -43% to 2.18B kronor ($325M) vs 1.95B kroner consensus. Sales -2% to 54.55B kroner vs 54.8B kroner, hurt by cautious spending by carriers; sales for main Networks unit -17%. N American sales +16%, Western & Central Europe -21%, China, Russia, Korea also fall. Margins 30.4% vs 35% last year, with the fall a result of strategy to build market share by taking on low-profit projects. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]

- Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 3:18 AM Ericsson (ERIC): Q2 EPS of 0.78 kronor beats by 0.03. Revenue of 55.3B kronor (+0.9% Y/Y) beats by 0.5B. Networks sales down Y/Y on the expected decline in CDMA equipment sales and weaker sales in China and Russia. The negative gross margin impact (narrowed to 32% from 37.8% last year) from the network modernization projects in Europe will start to gradually decline but could depress margins for several years. Shares -4.1% in Sweden. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 5:42 PM Mobile baseband chip JV ST-Ericsson (STM, ERIC) reports Q2 revenue of $344M (+19% Q/Q, but -10% Y/Y) and a net loss of $318M (up from $221M in the year-ago period). Moreover, the company expects revenue to be merely flat Q/Q in seasonally stronger Q3. At quarter's end, ST-Ericsson finalized the transfer of its app processor R&D team to STMicroelectronics. While ST-Ericsson struggles, baseband chip giant Qualcomm (QCOM) is expected to continue posting healthy growth. (PR) (previous) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
