With WiMAX and 3G on Your PC, What Will Happen? [view article]
Don't forget that Sprint is also coming out with EVDO/WiMAX combo cards later this year. Sprint also roams on Alltel EVDO, which is greater than Verizon and ATT coverage (for now).

When Intel puts out WiMAX/WiFi chipsets out at nearly the same price as WiFi only, the game will be over. The laptop makers just need to drop in the chipset. With 3G, they have a lot of extra overhead to work with the carriers.

WiMAX will also likely make it to a variety of devices since its controlled by the IEEE. The consumer electronics industry is already tied to IEEE. LTE will probably not make it into a wide array of devices because it is controlled by the telcom industry. Just ask Apple how fun that has been.

    Thanks Stricklybiz

Fair point - although that's possibly because I spend most of my time looking at the mobile industry, for whom pretty much all the computers of interest are notebooks. Certainly I hear a lot of folk in the wireless business talking about PCs as a synonym for laptop or notebook.

Another case of the tech industry using the same words in different ways, in different contexts.... (you should see the range of possible uses of the word "application"...

As it happens, it wouldn't surprise me to see more desktops getting used with mobile modules or external modems as well.

Well, Mr. Bubley, you really faked me out throught the first part of your article, leading me to read it. Your (unintentional) bait and switch was in using the abbreviation "PC" to indicate the topic and then switching (properly) to "laptop". I'm all PC/desktop and no longer travel or even roam around town, but I thought how nice it would be to have a PC equipped as you described. Maybe I'm making a distinction that doesn't really exist, but among my coterie of 2 or 3 we use "PC" and "notebook" to indicate the different configurations. Reply

Just How Late Is Nokia with HSUPA devices? [view article]
I agree that it's not immediately obvious what the applications for UPA are - most of the ones I can think of are not necessarily operator-friendly: VoIP, filesharing, using the phone as a web server etc.

On the other hand, it could be used for *operator* VoIP or other rich communications, managed P2P, decent-quality realtime video uploads & as a means to compete with home DSL/cable in some places.

Some operators have been quite aggressive deploying UPA - especially T-Mobile in Europe, Vodafone, some of the 3 subsids, AT&T etc.

Either way, it's unusual for Nokia not to have at least *some* devices supporting it before its main competitors do. It's been first to market with radio technologies like UMTS900 before.

devices are already field upgradable, operators dont want you to have this capability on the cheap phones. it takes up too much ota bandwidth.

You can already replace themes etc.... on just about every phone on the market.

the big guys can build out ecosystems but they still have to get operators to agree to let them be accessible on operator versions.

Consolidation is happening on platforms, google, symbian!! whats new in the article?

phones are already lifestyle devices ... else why would the refresh rates be so high?

The iphone? Actually, it seems like he is describing a high-end WM device! Apple really just copied existing smart phone technology and stuck in an ipod (which still won't transmit over stereo bluetooth)! But since they market so well, and the phone is thin people are willing to overlook the myriad of bugs in the device. Reply

Gee, you just described the iPhone. A long article to say that everyone is going to try to copy the iPhone based on 5 of its unique features/benefits.

Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
"Wednesday August 20, 6:46 pm ET The banks are the three biggest players in the auction-rate securities market that have not already reached a settlement with Cuomo, who is seeking deals on behalf of regulators and state authorities. Five major Wall Street firms including Citigroup Inc. and Switzerland's UBS AG have agreed to $42 billion in settlements.

For the next phase, Cuomo has directed staff to spend more time gathering facts and talking to the three banks about the sale of the risky securities, said a person inside the attorney general's office who asked not to be identified by name because he was not authorized to speak publicly."

    [[t]he $330 billion auction-rate securities market ...]

MSM [aka corp/media according to george Ure] may be playing games with this story.

"The courts, in practice, can do anything they want for the reason their actions are invisible to the public. But citizens are generally powerless to do anything about it for the reason of the reason of unaccountability in this system.

"Newspapers don't report the news, they shape the news." quipped Libertad co-founder John Gowan.

Mark Twain expressed a similar sentiment when he wrote "Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR. That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse."
