YTD is rather short period. For example Slovenia and China have rallied last year, and some correction is in line with expectation. It would be interested to have 3 year comparisement. Reply

    Thanks.

Visually this is the equivalent of being smacked in the face. There is a new world out there a la Columbus when he found America. The rewards for the Intrepid Investor are in the Frontier markets.

Most of the people on the street I speak with are talking about buying hybrids, motorcycles or scooters. I could see oil going to $141 as GS predicts but the numbers are beginning to show demand destruction here in the U.S.

$5 or $6 gas or diesel will not be pretty here in the States. Besides a few major metros, our public transportation system is horrible and the real major point is if 25% of the U.S. household income is now spent on energy and it goes to 40%, will U.S. consumer continue buying non-essentials? I think not, that means continuing GDP shrinkage until recession is declared turning into something uglier over a few years. The U.S. government could take drastic steps in subsidizing alternative energy independence but that is unlikely in the short-term as inside information comes easy in Washington and there are no restrictions for politicians investing in energy or agriculture.

Kind of hard for the investment community to invest in alternatives during a credit crunch period and also resist further plowing dough into oil & agriculture. I am guessing we'll go the Paul Volcker way and raise rates after this summer at least in the U.S. so it will likely be a crappy time for consumer and businessman alike for a good long time to come :(

Why do americans get huffed up about $200/barrel or $4/gallon oil?

Because the media wants them to. And the leaders can drum up sentiment to go to war over it. All Europe pays (and has been paying) more than $4 for several years ($8/gallon in London). Most of Asia pays about $4/gallon

"Geopolitical Issues Dominate" - they don't. Economy is just in a cyclical downturn. Can't make sense of the stock market - don't.

Don't get huffed up about oil prices!

icandoitdon, as you very well know it is the radical leaders in Iran that have been supporting the terrorists all around the world that makes Iran unique and therefore needs to be destroyed...before they can severly damage us. All the other wackos will behave themselves once we have demonstrated the consequence of Iran's support to Islamic radicals to the world. This generation has not seen the mushroom cloud and needs to be shown another demo in their own land. Reply

    igorisky:

i understand the rationalization for not wanting iran to develop nuclear weapons. but the genie was out of that bottle long ago. nuclear proliferation is a fact of life and it cannot be stopped. it's like wack-a-mole. are we going to bomb them all?
