Monday, May 13, 11:06 AM A downgrade to Equalweight from Barclays leads EZchip (EZCH -1.4%) to slide a bit. Shares took off last Thursday after the network processor vendor delivered roughly in-line Q1 results, but provided an upbeat earnings call. CEO Eli Fruchter stated sales to Juniper, which have been slumping for some time, grew 27% Q/Q and could rise Y/Y in 2013. Moreover, Ericsson, Tellabs, and Huawei have begun placing production orders for EZchip's NP-4 processor (Huawei has been a concern), and that while sales to top customer Cisco (32% of revenue) fell 30% Y/Y in Q1 due to "lumpiness," they're still expected to grow significantly Y/Y in 2013. Monday, March 11, 4:19 PM EZchip (EZCH +2.6%) had a roller-coaster ride after Kerrisdale Capital issued a report voicing concerns about Broadcom's (BRCM) entry into the carrier network processor market, arguing the company's ability to offer an end-to-end solution for line cards gives it an edge. Kerrisdale also warns of competition from Marvell's (MRVL) Xelerated unit, and argues EZchip's NPS processor will be at a manufacturing disadvantage relative to private Netronome. Thursday, February 14, 12:10 PM EZchip (EZCH +4.4%) rebounds a bit from yesterday's freefall after Oppenheimer upgrades shares to Outperform, arguing the selloff "exaggerates the impact" of lowered guidance. Thanks to Huawei's change of heart, EZchip now sees revenue growing 3x from 2012 levels over the next several years, well below prior guidance. On its earnings call, EZchip talked up the potential of its NPS processor, whose programmability and support for application-level analysis makes it well-suited for software-defined networking. The chipmaker stated Huawei hasn't yet placed production orders for EZchip's NP-4 processor, is developing a low-end network processor in-house, and might not use EZchip's next-gen NP-5 processor. Unfavorable comments were also reportedly made about ASPs and port counts at Cisco (43% of Q4 sales), though Cisco sales are still expected to grow in 2013.
