F vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Ford Motor Company (referred to herein as "Ford", the "Company", "we", "our" or "us") was incorporated in Delaware in 1919. We acquired the business of a Michigan company, also known as Ford Motor Company, that had been incorporated in 1903 to produce and sell automobiles designed and... More

- Friday, March 29, 5:45 AM Nineteen people are seeking to sue Ford (F) on behalf of customers in 14 states over an alleged defect that they say causes vehicles to accelerate unintentionally. The plaintiffs want damages for the loss of value to their cars. A similar case saw Toyota shell out $1.1B last year. 11 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 28, 8:04 AM The Big Three automakers (GM, F, FIATY.PK) are impressing analysts and consumers at the New York International Auto Show with a fresh slate of models that consumers will actually want to buy. It's in stark contrast to the recent Geneva Motor Show where a parade of struggling European automakers bumped up against each other with glitzy cars aimed at competing with high-end models from Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Rolls-Royce. What to watch: March auto sales in the U.S. could topple a 15M annual selling rate with the Big Three picking up momentum. 2 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 27, 5:01 PM Ford (F) expects an operating margin of ~10% for its North American ops this year, down slightly from 2012's 10.4%, Americas chief Joe Hinrichs discloses at a BofA conference. Ford's mid-decade outlook forecasts an 8%-10% margin for North America, and 8%-9% for its global ops. 2013 U.S. industry auto sales (on a SAAR basis) are pegged at 15M-16M, up from 14.8M. Ford estimates its Feb. '13 U.S. share was 16.1%, up 80 bps Y/Y. South America is seen having a roughly breakeven op. margin for 2013, below 2012's 2.1%. (slides) 2 Comments [Consumer, Earnings]
- Wednesday, March 27, 10:52 AM Though sales of pure electric vehicles have been a disappointment for most automakers, the hybrid segment is showing strength. March is expected to see a record 48K units sold with some forecasts ranging as high as 60K. A fresh slate of offerings and lower prices is attracting new buyers. What to watch: Ford (F -0.8%) could make a big splash this year with the compact C-Max and Fusion hybrids priced right in the sweet spot for many consumers and EPA-certified mpg ratings a shade above competing models. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 27, 10:19 AM Another firm is out with an optimistic outlook for U.S. car sales in March. Kelley Blue Book sees 1.45M units sold during the month with hybrids set to have their best month in history. The Big Three are all expected to put in a solid month, with sales gains of 6.5% for General Motors (GM -0.4%), 4.5% for Ford (F -1%), and 3.4% for Chrysler (FIATY.PK) forecast. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 27, 6:47 AM Ford (F) recalls 3.5K vehicles on concerns of a possible fuel tank leak. The recall by the automaker covers Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans as well as Explorer SUVs. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 2:11 PM Toyota (TM +0.1%) says it is "very optimistic" about the outlook for its U.S. operations citing jobs growth and (ironically) rising consumer confidence. VP for U.S. operations Bob Carter says March was very good to "all manufacturers" and predicts Toyota will sell 2.2M vehicles in the U.S. this year representing a 5.5% increase from 2012. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 5:40 AM Ford (F) CEO Alan Mulally says the company will continue to oppose Japan's entry into free trade talks with the United States until the nation opens its markets for more U.S. cars and works on measures to strengthen the yen. The exec called the automobile market in Japan the most closed in the world. 14 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 9:42 AM Ford (F +0.5%) plans to put a new spin on auto sales categories by lumping subcompact, compact, midsize, and compact SUV all into one "supersegment" batch. Auto industry analysts think Ford may be ahead of the curve with the supersegment category as a whole looking more appealing to buyers than large-sized cars. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, March 22, 8:40 AM Another electric vehicle bombshell: A new report from McKinsey indicates a third of all electric vehicle owners in Japan say they won't buy another with the nation's infrastructure not yet ready to support a network of charging stations. Sluggish sales and the looming threat of federal subsidies getting pulled away seems to have more major automakers subtly shifting their focus toward hybrid production instead of pure EV. 49 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 22, 6:56 AM U.S. auto sales will rise 8% in March to 1.465M at an annual selling pace which should top 15M, according to a new forecast from LMC. The average retail sale price is expected to increase 3% to $28,504 per vehicle. The outlook is a slight improvement over earlier forecasts and bodes well for the Big Three (GM, F, FIATY.PK). (full report .pdf) 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:44 PM Ford (F) could see even steeper losses in Europe than forecast with the automaker's pace of plant closures and layoffs based on sales estimates which have now been wadded up and discarded. Sales on the continent for Ford have tumbled 23.4% during the first two months of the year. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 21, 8:46 AM General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) are making solid progress selling cars to younger U.S. buyers, increasing market share in both the 18- to 24-year old demographic and the 25- to 34-year old range of buyers. The key appears to be the push by the U.S. automakers to offer smaller fuel-efficient vehicles with modern on-trend design. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 8:10 AM Automobile sales fell 10.2% Y/Y in Europe during February to 829K, according to the Association of European Car Manufacturers. Volkswagen (VLKAY.PK), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), and Fiat (FIATY.PK) all had another tough month on the continent, while South Korean automakers Hyundia (HYMLF.PK) and Kia (KIMTF.PK) tread water with sales. By region, sales in Germany and Italy were disappointing again while the U.K. is a bit of an outlier with car sales up 10.3% YTD. 9 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Sunday, March 17, 5:14 AM Ford (F) lowered CEO Alan Mulally's compensation by 29% to $20.95M in 2012 after the car maker missed its goals for profit, cash flow and market share. Mulally's package was made up of a $2M salary, a $3.95M bonus, and $15M of stocks, options and other compensation. Despite the wage cut, Mulally is still probably the world's best paid automotive CEO. 13 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 8:47 AM Automobile prices on new vehicles once again lagged overall consumer inflation, down 0.3% M/M in February and only up 1.1% compared to a year ago. Though automakers have been making a big deal on their earnings conference calls about being less promotional in recent quarters, today's CPI report showed the largest monthly drop in new car prices since 2010. 17 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
