- Tuesday, January 29, 4:06 PM Seagate (STX -9.4%) and Western Digital (WDC -5.2%) close with big losses after the former issued soft guidance to go with its FQ2 beat. EMC's guidance might be making a bad situation worse. FBN and Evercore have downgraded Seagate, which is trading around ~6x FY13E EPS even if one assumes consensus forecasts fall a bit. Management noted on the earnings call it expects hard drive industry volumes to be flat-to-down Q/Q, but added cloud-related sales remain a bright spot. LSI -2.3%. FIO -5.3%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Monday, January 28, 10:41 PM Seagate (STX) guided on its FQ2 call for FQ3 revenue of $3.25B-$3.45B, below a consensus of $3.58B. Gross margin is expected to be at the low end of a range of 27%-32% after coming in at 27.8% in FQ2. "We're trying to give a conservative outlook, because our customers [PC OEMs] are giving us conservative input," says CFO Pat O'Malley. A $40M investment has been made in server flash memory module maker and Fusion-io (FIO) rival Virident. STX -4.8% AH. WDC -2.6%. MRVL -1.4%. FIO -3.8%. After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: FAF +6%. PCL +3%. WCRX +3%. MCRS +3%. GGP +2%.
After-hours top losers: BMC -7%. EMC -5%. STX -5%. CTXS -4%. FIO -4%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, January 24, 10:10 AM Is Fusion-io (FIO -4%) another victim of Apple's FQ1 report? The server flash memory hardware maker did receive 56% of its revenue from Apple and Facebook in the September quarter. However, as CFO Peter Oppenheimer noted on the earnings call, Apple is still committed to spending ~$10B in capex in FY13, of which $9B will be unrelated to retail. Fusion-io's FQ2 report is due on Jan. 30. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: NFLX +39%. SWFT +15%. ERJ +11%. NEWL +9%.
Losers: MLNX -19%. NOK -10%. ESI -10%. AAPL -10%. LOGI -9%. KMT -7%. URRE -6%. CRUS -6%. ALTR -5%. FIO -5%. VRNG -5% . OPK -5% . Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, January 18, 6:20 PM Fusion-io (FIO) has open-sourced the hardware design behind its new ioScale server flash memory modules for use in Facebook's Open Compute data center platform, and hopes to profit by selling the controller tech needed to run the hardware. The move furthers Fusion-io's efforts to be viewed as a flash platform provider for data centers, rather than a mere hardware firm. Also: Facebook has released an Open Compute database server architecture (codenamed Dragonstone) that relies on ioScale for storage. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 16, 10:13 AM Fusion-io (FIO +0.1%) tries to win more business from Apple and Facebook (and other providers of Internet services) by launching Fusion ioScale, a cheaper, denser alternative to its mainstay ioDrive2 flash memory modules. Though the ioDrive2 line delivers top-notch performance, its premium pricing limits broader use in dense "web-scale" deployments that often have massive storage needs. A Facebook exec says his company was deeply involved in the product's R&D. (more) (cloud apps and flash) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 14, 9:24 AM "Within tech, we think that prospects of a potential bottoming in consensus estimates are improving ... relative safe haven stocks could be used as a source of funds," writes JPMorgan's Mark Moskowitz, explaining why he's downgrading EMC (EMC -1%) and IBM (IBM -1%) while upgrading H-P (HPQ +1.6%) and Fusion-io (FIO +6.1%). Apple and NetApp are his top large-cap picks, and Fusion-io, which he argues continues to "hold the pole position in server-side data acceleration," is his top small/mid-cap pick. EMC has already seen a raft of negative sell-side notes. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]

Premarket gainers: AZK +29%. CUR +14%. AVNW +13%. HWD +11%. VRNT +10%. NICE +8%. FIO +6%. FRAN +6%. DNDN +5%. ALU +6%.
Losers: NTE -11%. CRUS -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, January 14, 7:18 AM Hewlett Packard (HPQ) is upgraded to Hold at JPMorgan with price target raised to $21 from $15. Shares +2.6% premarket. At the same time, the analysts cut EMC to a hold. Shares -0.8%. The busy desk also upgrades Fusion-io (FIO) to a Buy. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 8, 9:49 AM Fusion-io (FIO -7.5%) falls hard on a downgrade to Market Perform from William Blair's Jason Ader. His checks indicate soft enterprise bookings, and that Intel's Ramsdale 910 server flash cards are gaining momentum. Ader notes the 910 is much cheaper than FIO's solutions, and that some believe it offers better write performance (ed: FIO's cards are known in part for their read performance). He adds the enterprise flash card market, demand for FIO's ioTurbine software, and partnerships with Cisco and NetApp are all developing slower than expected. EMC (EMC -1.1%) has also been downgraded. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 3, 4:51 PM Mellanox's warning fueled a gradual selloff in enterprise tech stocks. Some storage-centric names were among the hardest-hit: FIO -6.2%. BRCD -4.7%. ELX -3.9%. XRTX -4.7%. Other notable decliners: FFIV -3.8%. CTXS -3.4%. VMW -3.2%. TIBX -3%. QLIK -8.4%. (security hardware stocks) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 2, 6:28 PM Craig-Hallum has joined Oppenheimer in making cautious remarks about EMC (EMC -2%). Though believing EMC can meet Q4 estimates with the help of strong high-end storage (VMAX) and VMware (VMW +0.7%) sales, the firm thinks 2013 guidance could miss consensus in light of challenges posed by technologies such as flash storage, public cloud services (such as AWS), and open-source cloud solutions such as OpenStack. While impressed with EMC's flash efforts, CH largely sees them as defensive moves aimed at upstarts such as Fusion-io (FIO). 3 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, January 1, 1:40 PM For real-estate investors, the homebuilders ETF (XHB +55.6%) was the place to be in 2012. Retail (RTL +21.2%) outperformed residential (REZ +9.6%) and industrial (FIO -5.2%). Regionally, Asia real-estate (IFAS +39.4%) topped the list, followed by Europe (IFEU +24.5%) and the U.S. (RWR +13.3%). Full real-estate tables here. Comment! [Quick Ideas]

Ashraf Eassa: Claimed $OCZ's products were "unreliable" and that "that business model didn't work out". I mean, it's true, but still harsh.
