- Tuesday, June 18, 8:15 AM More on ICSC Retail Sales: The retail sector put in a mixed week with department stores, electronics store chains ([[RSH[[, BBY), and drug stores (CVS, WAG, RAD]]) strong for the period, but sales at dollar stores (DG, DLTR, FIVE, FDO) and wholesale clubs (COST, PSMT) notably weak. After last week's drop in sales cut into forward progress, the year-over-year gain in retail chain store sales stands 2.5% higher after threatening a 3% pace earlier in the year. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, June 13, 2:41 PM Are shares of Five Below (FIVE +2.8%) a good buy following Wednesday's beat and raise? Not according to Goldman's Stephen Grambling who says that while the results were "encouraging" (particularly in the face of "cooler weather"), at 53x revised NTM EPS, investors may be wise to "await a better entry point." Speaking of weather, on the CC Wells Fargo analyst Matthew Nemer asks if the cold weather will lead to pent-up demand going forward. "When the weather turns … we've had consistently terrific performance in years passed," CEO Thomas Vellios responds. (transcript) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 12, 4:18 PM More on Five Below's (FIVE) Q1: The company opens 14 new stores during the period and comps growth comes in at 4.2%. CEO Thomas Vellios notes that the results "came in ahead of original guidance." Trends improved during the second half of the quarter as consumer "headwinds abated." Outlook: FIVE sees Q2 adjusted EPS, revenue, and comps growth of $0.08-0.09, $112-114M, and 4-5% respectively. For the full year, management expects $0.65-0.68/share on revenue of $524-529M. Shares +6.9% AH. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, June 12, 4:06 PM Five Below (FIVE): Q1 EPS of $0.05 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $95.6M (+33% Y/Y) beats by $1.37M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Tuesday, June 4, 8:12 AM Though Dollar General (DG) met estimates with its Q1 report, a cut in guidance is proving painful as shares slide 6.3% premarket. Peers Family Dollar Stores (FDO), Dollar Tree (DLTR), and Five Below (FIVE) are on watch with the outlook from Dollar General for soft sales of non-consumables likely to weigh on shares in the discounting sector. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 2:34 PM Wal-Mart (WMT +1%) might be able to beat down competition from the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO, FIVE) if it can achieve two important things: 1) Take traffic directly away from dollar stores by opening new Neighborhood stores in strategic locations. 2) Drive home with consumers its pricing advantage, especially given that a new Bloomberg Industries study found Wal-Mart beat dollar stores on prices almost all the time. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 1:02 PM Retailer Five Below (FIVE +3.1%) jumps after saying sales grew 33% and comps rose 4.2% in Q1. CEO Thomas Vellios says headwinds "began to dissipate" halfway through the quarter and both "traffic and sales trends" strengthened. In light of the results, the company raises its Q1 adjusted EPS outlook to $0.03-0.04 per share from $0.02-0.03 per share previously. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 14, 6:58 AM Five Below (FIVE) files a registration statement with the SEC on a secondary offering of 8.563M shares of common stock on the behalf of selling shareholders. (S-1) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 16, 8:57 AM More on ICSC-Goldman Sachs Store Sales: Though the week of April 13 saw a drop in sales due to a sloppy weather pattern across the U.S. and a calendar shift tied to Easter, the month is still forecast to see a 2% to 3% Y/Y gain. Discounter business (DG, DLTR, FDO, FIVE) was reported to be soft for the week while apparel store traffic improved. Comment! [U.S. Economy]
