    Spansion (CODE) says it will buy Fujitsu Limited's (FJTSY.PK) microcontroller and analog business for $175M including $65M for inventory. CODE says the purchase "aligns with [its] strategy to expand into system-on-chip solutions that require leadership in embedded Flash technology." The acquisition should be accretive to earnings this fiscal year. (PR)

    Japanese stocks move higher in early trading, as investors shrug off weak GDP data and focus their attention on a central bank decision due out later in the day. The Nikkei Average rose 0.4% to 11,291, with the blue chips most active: Sony (SNE +1.3%), Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK +0.7%), Olympus (OCPNY.PK +1.2%), Hitachi (HTHIY.PK -1%) and Nissan (NSANY.PK -0.8).

    Fujitsu is said to be in talks to sell its main semiconductor plant to Taiwan Semi (TSM), apparently as part of a plan to separate manufacturing from design.

    Japanese stocks lose ground in early trading, as overnight losses in the U.S. and the prospect of new Greek elections weigh on large-cap names. The Nikkei Average fell 0.5% to 8,856: Panasonic (PC -3.4%), Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK -1.6%) and Mitsubishi Motors (MMTOF.PK -1.3%).

    Japanese stocks open higher on overnight gains in the U.S. and Europe. The Nikkei Average is currently up 0.6%, with financial shares and exporters leading gains: Daiwa Securities (DWA +1.5%), Mitsubishi UFJ (MTU +0.7%) and Nomura (NMR +1%), Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK +1.4%) and Nissan (NSANY.PK +1.1%).

    Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK) rolls out two new Android phones designed "for girls" in conjunction with fashion magazine Popteen. Replete with a wide variety of cracking smartphone features, both models also go heavy on the pink... very heavy.

    Japanese stocks jump in early trading on the back of a strong performance in the U.S. and Europe overnight. The Nikkei Average advanced +1.4% to 8,489.19, as technology and auto export shares lead gainers: Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK +3.5%), Subaru-maker Fuji Heavy Industries (FUJHY.PK +2.6%), Nissan Motor (NSANY.PK +2.6%).

    Samsung (SSNLF.PK), NTT DoCoMo (DCM), Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK), NEC, and Panasonic (PC) are considering a JV to develop baseband processor chips for mobile phones, so as to lessen their dependence on market leader Qualcomm (QCOM). DoCoMo is expected to have a majority stake in the JV.

    Surprisingly, Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) and Hitachi (HIT) make quick and decisive moves in the face of stiffening competition from South Korea. The companies are either outsourcing, selling, streamlining, or shuttering some of their moribund business lines. Well, 2011 is the year of the rabbit.

    A recovering global server market saw $11.8B in sales in Q3, a 13.2% rise from Q3 last year, and the fastest quarterly revenue growth since 2000, says IDC. Hewlett- Packard (HPQ) led in Q3 with 33.4% of revenue, followed by IBM (IBM) with a 30.6% share, and Dell (DELL) was 3rd with 14.1% share.

    Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK) and Sharp (SHCAY.PK) unveiled 11 new Symbian-based smartphones today, showing the declining mobile software platform may at least have a future in Japan. Nokia (NOK) just resumed development of Symbian, due to neglect from other vendors. Although Symbian is the mobile OS market leader, it's steadily lost ground since the iPhone (AAPL) launched in 2007.

    Microsoft (MSFT) and Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK) team up on cloud computing, with the partnership likely to be announced this week. Fujitsu is counting on the cloud for its long-term growth, and plans to spend ¥100B ($1.13B) on cloud computing-related businesses this fiscal year.
