FNMA.OB vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Fannie Mae is a government-sponsored enterprise that was chartered by Congress in 1938 to support liquidity, stability and affordability in the secondary mortgage market, where existing mortgage-related assets are purchased and sold. Our charter does not permit us to originate loans and lend... More

- Wednesday, May 29, 2:02 PM Bruce Berkowitz has taken about a $500M stake in the preferred stock of Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB -23%) and Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB -23.2%) - please note the symbols here are for the common. "The time to restructure (Frannie) is upon us," he tells CNBC. "Taxpayer dollars ... will be fully repaid ... and equitable treatment of taxpaying shareholders, including community banks and insurance companies must be restored." The common stock has rebounded somewhat from an early plunge, and the preferred shares have turned higher. 2 Comments [On the Move, Financials]
- Wednesday, May 29, 11:40 AM Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB -33.8%) and Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB -37.6%) both crumble - perhaps under their own ridiculous weight, or maybe given a push by SA's Dividend Monkey. He points out the two businesses - technically with intrinsic value of zero - were being valued (as of last night's close) at 40-60% of their 2007 market caps. The music's stopped - time to find a chair. 13 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 11:11 AM From John Hempton's lips to the market's ears. The "just insane" bidding up of the almost certainly worthless common stock of Fannie and Freddie (FNMA.OB, FMCC.PB) savagely reverses, with both falling more than 50% within minutes. 3 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 21, 10:11 AM Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB +31.5%) and Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB +26.9%) continue a torrid run, now closing in on quadrupling this week. Buy the stocks for a trade, but the idea there is any value at all in the common when it's likely the preferred may even be worthless is "just insane," says John Hempton (an owner of the preferred). 7 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 12:56 PM Can't get enough of the Treasury/GSE news? Behind the move, speculates ZH, is Tim Geithner's fury at FHFA head DeMarco's snubbing of administration plans to impose principal reductions on mortgages ahead of the election. More? From the Treasury PR: "(This ends) the circular practice of the Treasury advancing funds to the GSEs simply to pay back dividends to Treasury." Did Treasury just admit it was running a Ponzi operation? 6 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, August 8, 2011, 1:47 PM Mortgage-backed securities (MBB +0.2%) gain slightly even after S&P lowers its rating on Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB), Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB) and FHLBs, although yield spreads versus Treasurys widened. Analysts expect the bigger concern for mortgage securities is increased interest-rate volatility and uncertainty on prepayments. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
