- Wednesday, April 17, 12:26 PM Chip stocks have a rough day (SOXX -2.8%) following Cirrus Logic's warning, light guidance from Linear Technology (LLTC -4.6%) to go with a Q1 beat - Linear sees 1%-4% Q/Q revenue growth for calendar Q2, below a 4.7% consensus - and ho-hum Q1 results/Q2 guidance from Intel. Apple suppliers Broadcom (BRCM -4%), Avago (AVGO -5.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM -6.7%), NXP (NXPI -7%), RF Micro (RFMD -2.8%), and OmniVision (OVTI -3.3%) are among the casualties, but they're far from alone. ANAD -6.2%. STM -5.7%. FSL -5%. ADI -4.5%. TXN -4.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 9, 5:53 PM SanDisk (SNDK) has hired Henri Richard, until now the sales/marketing chief for fellow chipmaker Freescale (FSL), to be its new enterprise/OEM sales chief. RBC praises the move, and sees it as "driven by a need to manage and grow accounts" as sales of "system solutions" (as compared with retail sales) account for a growing share of SanDisk's business. After-hours top losers: INTX -14%. USMO -5%. LRE -4%. CMLP -4%. HPT -4%. 3 Comments [On the Move] - Wednesday, March 6, 7:07 PM ARM's (ARMH) CPU cores are going into Baidu's data centers ... and they might also wind up in human stomachs. Marvell (MRVL) says Baidu will use its ARM-based Armada XP server CPUs in systems handling cloud storage services. Meanwhile, Freescale (FSL) has developed an ARM-based microcontroller that measures just 1.9 x 2 mm, and says it's working with customers/partners on "products that can be swallowed." Though ARM mobile and server chips get more press, the company's growing microcontroller share is driving much of its unit growth. (previous) 2 Comments [Tech]

UPI -9%. 3 Comments [On the Move] - Wednesday, January 30, 10:13 AM Freescale (FSL +17.4%) roars higher after easily beating Q4 estimates and providing Q1 guidance well above consensus. Sales of microcontrollers (strong uptake for ARM-based designs) and base station power amplifiers (lifted by China's 3G buildout) were healthy, offsetting weakness in network processor, analog/sensor, and automotive IC sales. The results appear a validation of new CEO Gregg Lowe's efforts to narrow Freescale's R&D focus and restructure. Pac Crest thinks margins could rise throughout 2013. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 4:58 PM Tech guidance roundup: 1) Plantronics (PLT - earnings) expects FQ4 revenue of $190M-$195M and EPS of $0.68-$0.72, largely above a consensus of $184.4M and $0.68. 2) Freescale (FSL - earnings) expects Q1 revenue of $945M-$985M, above a consensus of $933.1M. 3) Websense (WBSN - earnings) expects Q1 revenue of $84M-$87M and 2013 revenue of $351M-$361M, below a consensus of $90.2M and $367.4M. PLT +2.8% AH. WBSN -7%. FSL unchanged for now. Comment! [Tech, Earnings]

- Friday, January 4, 4:03 PM In what could be a sign chip stocks have more than priced in their fill of bad news, Freescale (FSL +0.5%), a pretty diversified chipmaker, has closed higher in spite of being hit with a downgrade to Neutral from JPMorgan. The firm notes Freescale has rallied 55% from its Nov. bottom (shares are still well below their 52-week high), and thinks "persistent weakness" in automotive, networking, and industrial chip sales will lead to just 3% revenue growth in 2013. CEO Gregg Lowe provided a cautious outlook on chip demand last month. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 6:52 PM Freescale (FSL) CEO Gregg Lowe says he doesn't see any evidence global chip sales will soon rebound, even though Q4 is set to be the 6th straight quarter of Y/Y shipment declines. Gartner is slightly more positive, forecasting industry sales will rise 4.5% in 2013 after falling 3% in 2012. Rising NAND flash memory and ASIC sales, fueled by respective 33% and 38.5% increases in smartphone and tablet shipments, are expected to drive the increase, even as PC sales remain weak. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 9:34 AM Renesas (RNECY.PK) says it will receive ¥150B ($1.8B) from a government-backed fund and manufacturers to help stay in business, and expects an additional ¥50B from the fund in time. A November Nikkei report indicated Renesas would get $2.2B in exchange for a $2.2B stake and a commitment to restructure. Any downsizing efforts could provide microcontroller rivals such as ATML, FSL, NXPI, and MCHP a chance to gain share. Comment! [Tech]
