- Wednesday, April 17, 12:26 PM Chip stocks have a rough day (SOXX -2.8%) following Cirrus Logic's warning, light guidance from Linear Technology (LLTC -4.6%) to go with a Q1 beat - Linear sees 1%-4% Q/Q revenue growth for calendar Q2, below a 4.7% consensus - and ho-hum Q1 results/Q2 guidance from Intel. Apple suppliers Broadcom (BRCM -4%), Avago (AVGO -5.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM -6.7%), NXP (NXPI -7%), RF Micro (RFMD -2.8%), and OmniVision (OVTI -3.3%) are among the casualties, but they're far from alone. ANAD -6.2%. STM -5.7%. FSL -5%. ADI -4.5%. TXN -4.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

UPI -9%. 3 Comments [On the Move] - Wednesday, January 30, 10:13 AM Freescale (FSL +17.4%) roars higher after easily beating Q4 estimates and providing Q1 guidance well above consensus. Sales of microcontrollers (strong uptake for ARM-based designs) and base station power amplifiers (lifted by China's 3G buildout) were healthy, offsetting weakness in network processor, analog/sensor, and automotive IC sales. The results appear a validation of new CEO Gregg Lowe's efforts to narrow Freescale's R&D focus and restructure. Pac Crest thinks margins could rise throughout 2013. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, November 26, 2012, 7:56 AM A fund backed by the Japanese government is set to pay $2.2B to buy 2/3 of chipmaker Renesas (RNECY.PK) from current owners Mitsubishi, NEC, and Hitachi, a source tells the Nikkei. Renesas, which rose 16.6% in Tokyo on the report, would reportedly shutter factories and cut as many as 5K jobs as part of the deal. Renesas is the top player in the microcontroller market, where it competes with Microchip, Freescale, STMicroelectronics, and others. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 1:00 PM Freescale (FSL -4.2%) slumps after UBS starts coverage with a Hold and $11.75 PT. The firm sees "few near-term catalysts," and considers the maker of analog chips and microcontrollers in the midst of a "multi-year turnaround." UBS likes the recent hiring of Texas Instruments exec Gregg Lowe as CEO, but thinks his impact won't be felt for 1-3 years. Goldman upgraded Freescale earlier this month as part of a bullish call on chip stocks. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 1:35 PM Freescale (FSL +10.9%), LSI (LSI +5.8%), and Applied Materials (AMAT +4.9%) lead a major rally in chip stocks (SOXX +2.6%) after Goldman upgrades the companies. Discussing Freescale, Goldman argues downside to estimates is limited given soft guidance and a lean supply chain, and (more importantly for peers) the firm expects EPS to be "up significantly" in 2013 and 2014 thanks to a new chip industry up cycle. MU +5.4%. NXPI +5.8%. MRVL +4.8%. ATML +5.9%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 4:32 PM Freescale Semiconductor (FSL): Q2 EPS of $0.07 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $1.03B (-15.9% Y/Y) beats by $30M. Shares -1.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 2:02 PM Microchip (MCHP -0.7%) is only off slightly following its deal to acquire fellow microcontroller vendor Standard Microsystems (SMSC +38.4%). Likely helping is Microchip's forecast the deal will be accretive in its first full quarter after completion. Capstone's Jeff Schreiner thinks Microchip may be trying to strengthen its position in the growing automotive microcontroller market. Rivals Atmel (ATML +1.6%) and Freescale (FSL +1.8%) are rallying a little. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Friday, April 20, 2012, 12:43 PM Weak results and/or guidance (I, II, III, IV) from SanDisk (SNDK -13.4%), Freescale (FSL -7.9%), Lattice Semi (LSCC -9.4%), and Altera (ALTR -6.5%) is producing a selloff in chip stocks (SOXX -1.2%), which had been rallying on evidence of rebounding demand. Among the hardest hit (aside from the guilty parties): OVTI -3.9%. SWKS -3.9%. MU -3.7%. CRUS -3.1%. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 5:25 PM In tandem with its Q1 report, Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) announces chairman and CEO Rich Beyer, who has held the top job since 2008, plans to retire. Freescale's board has begun searching for a successor. Shares are down 3.6% AH, likely affected both by the CEO news and Freescale's Q2 guidance for revenue of $975M-$1.025B (consensus stands at $1.02B). (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 4:46 PM Freescale Semiconductor (FSL): Q1 EPS of -$0.04 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $950M (-6.2% Y/Y) misses by $11M. Shares +0.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 12, 2012, 11:58 AM RBC's upgrade of Freescale Semiconductor (FSL -1.4%) is riddled with so many negatives, it's little wonder shares are lower. FQ1 results (in April), long-term revenue growth and gross margins likely will come up short, the firm says. But FSL should de-leverage its massive debt pile in coming years, which would decrease the rate on its remaining debt, boosting EPS. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 3, 2012, 11:44 AM Though most analysts seem inclined to look past the bad news in weak chip sales, Barclays now expects semiconductor revenue growth to come in flat to 4% in 2012, worse than its prior view for a 2%-5% rise. The firm lowers its ratings on INTC +0.8%, AMAT +0.9%, FSL +1.9%, MCHP -1.6% and CODE +0.8% to Equal Weight from Overweight. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, October 21, 2011, 10:30 AM Freescale Semiconductor (FSL -6%) tanks following its Q3 report. While revenue of $1.14B (-7% Y/Y) and EPS of $0.29 beat by $12M and $0.06, the company guided on its call for Q4 revenue of $1B-$1.06B, below a $1.11B consensus. Like fellow chipmaker LLTC, Freescale cites weak industrial and telecom demand as reasons for its soft guidance. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
