- Tuesday, April 9, 1:41 PM First Solar (FSLR +23.8%) guides on its analyst day for 2013 revenue of $3.8B-$4B and EPS of $4-$4.50, far above a consensus of $3.15B and $3.46. Shares have spiked higher on the news, and were shortly halted due to volatility. Other solar names are also surging: SPWR +9.8%. TSL +8.7%. DQ +12.3%. STP +36.1%. LDK +15%. JKS +15.4%. WFR +7.5%. JASO +6.6%. (previous) Update (1:56): First Solar shares are now up 48.2%, and have been halted again. CNNMoney's Paul R. La Monica notes over 1/3 of the float is shorted. "Can you say squeeze?" 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, April 9, 1:32 PM More on First Solar's (FSLR +7.8%) analyst day: The company predicts its manufacturing cost/watt will total $0.63-$0.66 in 2013, and fall to $0.40 by 2017. First Solar has longed banked on lower manufacturing costs to differentiate its thin-film solar panels from silicon-based alternatives, but its edge has narrowed in recent years as Chinese rivals ramped silicon module production, leading to industry oversupply and dumping accusations. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 11:00 AM First Solar (FSLR +5.6%) is shooting higher as its analyst day presentations are made (webcast); the solar giant has struck an upbeat tone about demand and long-term margins thus far. Ahead of the presentations, First Solar announced it had developed a CdTe thin-film solar module with a 16.1% efficiency in lab tests; that's soundly above a prior record of 14.4%, and (assuming eventual production) narrows the historical efficiency edge held by silicon modules. First Solar has also rolled out new Series 3 modules, and raised its efficiency targets for 2015 and 2017. 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 8, 10:07 AM First Solar (FSLR +1.8%) and sales chief James Brown have "mutually agreed" Brown should no longer work for the company. The disclosure, which comes in advance of tomorrow's analyst day, doesn't seem to be bothering investors much, as First Solar joins a broader rally in solar names (TAN +1.3%) in the wake of Trina's upbeat comments about industry capacity and Chinese demand. JKS +8.2%. CSUN +8.4%. YGE +4%. SOL +4.7%. SPWR +2.4%. SCTY +1.9%. DQ +6.3%. CSIQ +2.6%. JASO +2.3%. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 10:40 AM First Solar (FSLR -0.6%) acquires a 150MW solar project in Imperial County, California from a consortium featuring Goldman Sachs. Construction of the project is set to begin this year, with the goal of completing it in 2014. (PR) (other purchases: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 25, 12:36 PM Solar stocks slump after JA Solar misses Q4 EPS estimates (while beating revenue estimates) thanks to a -4.6% gross margin, and forecasts a major Q/Q shipment drop. TSL -13.3%. YGE -11.1%. SOL -5.7%. LDK -4.1%. CSIQ -4.4%. JKS -3.1%. FSLR -2.6%. SPWR -2.8%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 12:54 PM On a day when Suntech's creditors have filed for bankruptcy proceedings to commence, U.S. solar plays First Solar (FSLR +6%), SunPower (SPWR +5.1%), and MEMC (WFR +4.3%) are up strongly. The fact the Chinese government now appears willing to let local manufacturers go under (previous) could be fueling hopes of a more stable/rational pricing environment. On the flip side, the government's plans to cut solar subsidies stand to hurt local demand. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 10:36 AM Suntech’s (STP -35.8%) troubles come even as the NYT reports U.S. solar installations surged to a record in 2012, in part because of the same oversupply of cheap Chinese solar panels that have crushed prices and solar stocks. Perhaps that’s why even as Suntech shares collapse, the solar sector (TAN +0.5%) is holding up well so far; YGE flat, FSLR -0.6%, TSL -1.7%. Comment! [Energy, Tech, U.S. Economy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 4:02 PM MEMC's (WFR -13.4%) soft guidance and a report the Wuxi, China government will take control of Suntech (STP -23.6%) ignited a solar selloff (TAN -5%). LDK (LDK -12.7%), whose financial position is arguably only a little better than Suntech's, was especially hard-hit, but ReneSola (SOL -5.3%), Yingli (YGE -3.4%), Trina (TSL -3.5%), SunPower (SPWR -2.7%), and First Solar (FSLR -2%) also saw losses. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 12, 11:11 AM An upgrade to Hold from DNB Markets helps First Solar (FSLR +1.5%) trek higher. "We had been negative on First Solar, believing consensus had looked too high. This has now come down to fall closer in line with our forecasts." The firm is maintaining a PT of $27. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:03 AM Raymond James is getting less negative on solar. SunPower (SPWR), First Solar (FSLR), Trina (TSL), and Suntech (STP) have all been upgraded to Market Perform. It might've been wiser to make this call in November. SPWR +3.3%. FSLR +2.8%. TSL +1%. STP +1.7% in spite of its boardroom drama. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 7:05 AM Northland Capital starts coverage on two solar names, with First Solar initiated a Sell and SunPower a Buy. FSLR -0.9%, SPWR +1.9% premarket. 1 Comment [Energy]

[On the Move] - Wednesday, February 27, 11:40 AM Unsurprisingly, solar stocks are giving back some of their big 2013 gains (TAN -3.7%) in response to First Solar's (FSLR -16.1%) Q4 results and guidance. LDK -9.6%. SCTY -7.7%. SPWR -6.2%. YGE -6%. TSL -4.5%. JASO -4.4%. GTAT -2.9%. Piper and Baird have joined BofA in downgrading FSLR. On the earnings call, management said it's targeting a 2013 book-to-bill of at least 1 (it was 0.8 in 2012), but cautioned it expects 2H results to be weaker than 1H results due to upcoming project completions and a greater mix of module sales. 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 27, 7:34 AM First Solar (FSLR) is now off 14% premarket following last night's earnings. "It appears that the company is more willing to be aggressive on pricing than we thought ... there's a possibility that H2 financial performance is weaker than the first," says BAML, downgrading the stock to Sell. 1 Comment [On the Move, Energy]
