ETFs are likely to displace mutual funds within the next 15 years, says financial advisor Ric Edelman, preaching to the choir at IU's Inside ETFs conference. Mutual funds are a "pencil and paper" business model in a high-tech world, he says, reminding ETFs are still a very young investment vehicle, with just a 3% rate of U.S. ownership.

P-E firms are facing a fight for survival as they look to to raise $177.4B of new capital, up 81% from this time last year and against a background of risk aversion, a lending freeze and global economic problems. In 2011, funds attracted $263B, well below the $600B they raised at the peak of the buyout boom.

The SEC has reportedly begun an informal investigation of P-E firms, including whether they inflate the valuations of their assets when raising new funds. The agency has sent letters requesting information about investments and how they're valued, as well as about PE firms' investors and their communications.

Mario Gabelli’s firm, GAMCO Investors (GBL), updates its “Focus Five” list of favorite stocks, with special emphasis on how companies would be valued in mergers and other leveraged situations: Airgas (ARG), CF Industries (CF), Snyder's-Lance (LNCE), Teco Energy (TE), Yahoo (YHOO). A huge exodus from U.S. actively managed mutual funds in June: Investors pulled $19B more out of the funds than they put in, the most since the March 2009 market bottom, while index stock funds saw $1.1B in net inflows. "Investors are realizing that for a third of the cost they can buy passive funds and pretty much outperform everyone," Josh Brown says. Will this trend pressure the asset management stocks like ACAS, BEN, GBL, JNS, LM, TROW and WDR despite their high dividend yields?
