The Long Case for GE [view article]
Currently long 5000 shares at $28.34. I get in at around $28 and exit at $29 with call writing providing additional income. Good stock and as mentioned the dividend is a big plus. Not mentioned that GE has invested in oil service related companies via their Vetco Gray and Sondex acquisitions. Vetco Gray is very tied into subsea drilling although there are more focused ways to play that segment. Reply
The Long Case for GE [view article]
I got thru the first sentence and decided there was no reason to read the rest. I figured it would be the same song and dance that every bull on GE writes about.I have written about (and been dead right about) why if you are looking to create wealth, you cannot and should not own any of the mega cap stocks in existence. If you are 55 and over, and want a stock that should not move much and give you an OK yield, and preserve your wealth, then GE and the mega cap stocks are for you.
GE, the stock, has gone nowhere in 10 years- 0% return. Inflation is greater than the dividend so the dividend argument does not hold water either.
GE, as with other mega cap stocks, cannot exponentially expand it's market cap, thanks to the laws of large numbers, amount of outstanding shares, etc.
It took GE 25 years to add 240 Billion in market cap from when it was a 10 billion dollar market cap company- a return of 1000's of percent.
If the stock was able to add that same amount in market cap today, you would get a return of 100%. If it took GE another 25 years (from today) to add another 250 Billion in market cap, you would have a 100% return over the next 25 years.
The simple (and it is simple) fact is that in order to create wealth over time, if you are anywhere between 20 and 55 yrs old, you need to be invested in companies that are small to mid cap companies, that have market caps any where from 800 million to 2 billion, with fewer than 200 million shares outstanding.
What would you rather own: A 1 billion dollar market cap company, that if it expanded its market cap to 11 billion over 25 years, thus resulting in a 1000% return (and the possibility for another 1000% return over the next 25 years)
OR
A 250 billion dollar market cap company that maybe has the potential to rise about 100% over the next 25 years. Not because the company is a poor company, no, simply because mathematically, the odds are against you.
XOM was the exception because of oil prices, however if oil settles into a huge trading range between $90 and $150 over the next decade, I expect XOM to return very little over that time frame.
Full disclosure- I have no GE position, in any market. Reply

Pch101, the point is, conservation is not the answer. Any significant amount would be the death of our economy. Extreme conservation would cause far more harm than good. It's last on my list of things to put into an energy plan. It's great for short term relief, but is a real drag for a long term energy strategy. And certainly energy independence is possible, just not for 30 years or more. It would take a plan and some advances in technology. If you think those are not likely to happen, then you haven't studied history and noticed what people do when pressed. Now, for the first time this country is starting to see some real pressure on our wallets in regards to energy purchases. If this keeps up, we'll find the workable replacements.
I am anything but a Pickens supporter. Like I said, I've seen the wind farms up close and personal - they suck. But there is a place for some of the different energy technologies.Competiti... between them and among them will help eventually produce the energy independence we need. I don't expect it to happens anytime soon and any plan shouldn't be based on a short term goal either. Reply

It's interesting to not see Citigroup and Bank of America listed among the top firms by market capitalization - when they are listed in the top 10 of the 2007 Forbes Global 2000 -- goes to show the effects of the current financial crisis. Interesting to see HSBC and the Chinese Banks not affected to nearly the degree as BofA and Citi. Also interesting to see that almost all the firms are down year to date except Wal-Mart and J&J. (would expect to see a higher percentage of larger firms, which are expected to be more "safe" than smaller firms, holding their own in a down market). Reply

NBC screwed us by skewing the Olympic coverage towards prime-time volleyball. We are told that they even negotiated with the IOC and Beijing in order to re-schedule the volleyball games for prime-time broadcast.
Why did we need to stay up until midnight to see traditional events like gymnastics? Because NBC bought exclusive rights to broadcast volleyball for the next 5 years and they needed to create an audience for America's 'New Sport'. Even the legendary Decathlon was ignored.
So if you want to know why the Internet coverage was so robust you need look no further than NBC's narrow, biased and self centered TV programming.

Personally, I am really suprise Networks haven't done more in general to get content online. It is so easy to skip advertisments when veiwing content OTA, but most netbase broadcasts can ensure the viewers are forced to watch ads with click to continues etc. They could even require the viewer to create a profile with basic information that could target the ads to the right segements even further increasing the value of the slot to advertisers. Seems advertisers would get much more bang for they buck just skipping OTA advertising altogther. ReplyHow You Can Invest in the Pickens Plan [view article]

I had no issue with the cable modem provider as you just select another one and another zip code (after clearing your cookies). I hated that part but it worked. Also, silverlight worked great for me on xp pro. No issues. ReplyHow You Can Invest in the Pickens Plan [view article]
Plug in hybrids for cars, ok, but there are 200 mil cars in this country, how long do you think it would take to make a significant change using plug in hybrids. Ordinary hybrids are a fraud, must be plug in. With NG we can do conversions; sitting here on my street is a pickup truck that runs on NG or Propane.. As far as hydrogen, it appears to be only useful for things like a city bus or similar, not even likely economical for taxi cabs.On Aug 26 03:09 PM jtsymbo wrote:

You're right on target Pch101. Once again, we need to go nuclear for electrical power, and pursue plug in hybrids for our cars. This will help us get us through the transition period until possibly hydrogen becomes feasible. ReplyTuesday Options Update: UNG, WYE, XLF, GE, AAPL, MRVL, FNM, MCRS, CLNE, CAKE, [view article]

My biggest complaint was that the website had extremely poor usability. It wasn't just the lack of video. It often took me multiple searches down blind alleys and nearly random clicking just to figure out a clip wasn't there in the first place. Not to mention how noisy the page impressions were. Yecch.I will say that Silverlight worked very well for me (once I gave up on trying to bypass it and just gave in). The picture was crystal clear with no stuttering. Reply
