Premarket gainers: NWBO +9%. GFI +7%. BCRX +7%. HK +7%. AU +7%. NG +6%. AUQ +6%. SAND +6%. GOLD +5%. KGC +5%.
Losers: LDK -16%. SRPT -11%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 16, 8:24 AM Most of this morning's biggest premarket gappers come from yesterday's downtrodden mining losers: GFI +7.8%, AU +6.6%, GOLD +6.1%, KGC +4.8%, ABX +4.1%, AG +4%, HMY +3.2%, HL +3.1%, AUY +2.8%, EGO +2.6%, SLW +2.5%, RIO +2.3%, NEM +2%, MT +1.9%. ETFs: GDX +2.8%, SLV +2.8%, GLD +2.3%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, April 15, 7:00 PM The list of 52-week lows reached today is littered with miners and resource names: ABX, ACI, AG, AKS, ANV, AU, AUQ, AUY, CDE, CLF, CVE, EGO, EXK, EXXI, FCX, FNV, FST, GFI, GG, GOLD, HL, HMY, IAG, IPI, KGC, MHR, MT, MTL, NEM, NFX, NG, NGD, NOG, PAAS, PWE, RGLD, RIC, SA, SAND, SGY, SSRI, SVM, TCK, TGB, TRQ, WLT, WTI, X. 5 Comments [Commodities, Energy]
- Monday, April 15, 10:37 AM It was difficult enough to maintain a profitable mine when the price of gold was relatively stable; with gold plummeting, there’s likely even more pain ahead. Citi’s Johann Steyn, who covers South African gold miners, downgrades his target price and earnings outlook for the entire sector, and cuts Harmony Gold (HMY -8.2%) to Sell. For what it's worth, he calls Gold Fields (GFI -3.2%) his favorite. 3 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, April 15, 5:03 AM Mining stocks are taking a bit of a hiding following China's slowing GDP growth and the sell-off in precious metals. Rio Tinto (RIO) -4.5% premarket, BHP Billiton (BHP) -3.6%, Barrick Gold (ABX) -3.6%, AngloGold (AU) -5.2%, IAMGold (IAG) -1.2%, Gold Fields (GFI) -5%, Goldcorp (GG) -3.9%, Kinross (KGC) -5.1%, Seabridge Gold (SA) -2.8%, Newmont Mining (NEM) -3.4%, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) -2.85% and Anglo American (AAUKF.PK) -3.9% in London. NovaGold (NG) fell 13% on Friday. 3 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 4:42 PM Investors had been hoping AngloGold (AU) would split itself in two, but South Africa’s government has problems with it despite allowing Gold Fields (GFI) to spin off Sibanye earlier this year. J.P. Morgan suspects AU wanted to house the South African assets in an SA-listed entity with the international assets listed separately in New York/London, not popular with local politicians and very different from GFI's move. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Friday, April 12, 2:27 PM Goldman's short call on gold looks prescient, as comex gold sinks $63.50 to settle at $1,501.40/oz. for its lowest close since July 2011. Traders and analysts see no obvious trigger for the selloff, which seems to reflect the malaise that has gripped the market. Silver slips $1.37 to $26.33/oz. Miners are huge losers: HMY -7.5%, ABX -7.3%, AEM -6.9%, AUY -6.2%, SLW -5.6%, NEM -5.2%, EGO -4.9%, GFI -4.8%, GG -4.5%. 38 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 9, 8:44 AM Gold Fields (GFI) +1.9% premarket after reporting employees at its Tarkwa and Damang mines in Ghana returned to work from last week's strike after management and the country's mineworkers union reached settlement on the issues that gave rise to the dispute. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]

Wednesday, April 3, 5:35 PM
After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: CCG +8%. ANV +5%. AVEO +4%. GFI +3%. VALE +2%.
After-hours top losers: SFUN -6%. IMUC -3%. CPWR -3%. LSE -3%. ROC -2%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, April 3, 10:25 AM Gold Fields (GFI -1.9%) says employees at its Tarkwa and Damang mines in Ghana have embarked on illegal strikes that have halted production at both mines. GFI says it is analyzing and investigating the miners' demands but appeals to employees to maintain law and order. Most big miners are up in early trading: AEM +0.9%, AUY +0.8%, NEM +0.5%, GG +0.2%. (also) Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 3, 8:55 AM Gold Fields (GFI) expects Q1 production, excluding any contribution from Sibanye Gold, at 476K gold-equivalent oz., in-line with full-year guidance of 1.825M-1.9M oz. Final reported Q1 results must include two months of production from Sibanye; on that basis, production is seen at ~662K gold-equivalent oz. Separately, GFI is downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse. GFI -2% premarket. 1 Comment [Commodities, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 21, 7:19 AM "The next fad is going to be the unbundling of the majors," says Randgold Resources (GOLD) CEO Mark Bristow, as the spend-happy gold miners now look to shed assets. Some hope for an unbundling of value similar to that of the oil majors spinning off their refinery and other assets. Keep an eye on John Paulson's efforts to break-up AngloGold (AU). GDX -19.3% YTD. 4 Comments [Commodities, Quick Ideas]

Thursday, February 21, 9:10 AM
Premarket gainers: PRKR +38%. RPRX +31%. NVGN +28%. BRY +22%. PEGA +17%. LOCK +7%. LNCO +5%. ALXA +5%.
Losers: GENT -37%. PAY -34%. GFI -17%. ALU -7%. WLT -6%. TSLA -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, February 20, 12:52 PM AngloGold Ashanti (AU -4.2%) shares are weak after reporting earnings and interesting comments from outgoing CEO Mark Cutifani, who calls negative views on South Africa "significantly overblown" but says the country’s mining sector "may be finished" if heavy labor violence returns. Tumbling gold prices aren't helping. Other South African miners also are lower: GFI -2.4%, HMY -2.2%. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, February 15, 2:59 PM It's rough sledding today for gold miners (GDX -3.4%), and especially so for Gold Fields (GFI -7.4%), which suffered a BofA downgrade to Neutral from Buy. Discontinued KDC and Beatrix operations were making material contributions to both earnings and cash flow, the firm says; their exclusion lowers GFI's valuation to the lower end of global peers. 1 Comment [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 8:29 AM Gold Fields (GFI): Q4 net earnings of ZAR546M. Total cash cost of $946/oz.; NCE of $1,476/oz. Total operating margin 44%; NCE margin 13%. Attributable gold production for FY 2013 expected at 1.825M-1.9M equivalent oz. excluding discontinued KDC and Beatrix operations; estimated total cash cost $860/oz., NCE at $1,360/oz. Shares +1.3% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Commodities, Breaking News]
