Dividend No Saving Grace for Graco [view article]
you ask the right question, exactly, renn22233. High dividends only make sense when the company cannot invest all of the cash flow at satisfactory rates of return - a distinct feature of well established companies who more or less have captured their key markets and have only limited expansion potential.
so graco might surprise at some point with a quite steep increase in dividends - or a huige special dividend. or they may just continue to buy back their shares, which, given their great ROICs would certainly be the most efficient use of suplus cash flow

Graco is a good company - dominates it's market niche, well run, financially healthy, sells replacement products (a repeat business). They also have a good international exposure for growth. Ranked highly on the Magic Formula screen. More analysis:

Why would you expect a company to pay a large dividend if it has ROIC of 30%-40% and could therefore reinvest its earnings at that rate. I question your financial aptitude. Reply

You're right that Graco isn't a stock for dividend investors. It is, I believe, a growth stock, with significant prospects in Europe. The depreciation of the US dollar may make Graco products cheaper in Europe. I believe that valuing Graco as a dividend stock is an incorrect approach. Reply

Not many stocks rising last week... Yesterday's end of day rally was a wild one, but the volume came in selling at the close. Reply

Out of many voices comes one helluva story and no voice is insignificant. Remember that little butterfly in the Amazon helping cause the storms in Kansas? We're all part of the grand scheme of things to one extent or another.

Unfortunately the earnings were up but the stock went down...go figure.

Yep. Hopefully the one extra voice added to the discussion. If not, I guess worst case is my incremental hot air was insignificant in the scheme of things. Reply

In part the stocks I am watching are based on whether they are on my watch list or have discussed them in the past. As you say, Apple is discussed to death and the incremental value of my own contribution would probably be minimal. While some will surely disagree, I feel I can add more value to the discussion of the others listed. Reply

Although I am sick to death of hearing about AAPLs iPhone, it has had a huge impact on the NASDAQ in recent weeks, helping it keep its head above the subprime waters. Suppliers to iPhone production have also benefited from its successful launch. I am curious as to why you would not monitor Apple's earnings report Wednesday after hours? A bad report (although very unlikely) would have a profound effect on the stock and possibly others in the NASDAQ. XRX, WDC. and some of the others you mentioned are mere sideshows in comparison.
