- Friday, May 17, 4:23 PM Gilead Sciences (GILD +2.4%) finishes higher today after UBS raised its price target to $67 from $63 and reiterated its Buy rating. Analyst Matthew Roden sees ongoing strength for its HIV franchise, saying the firm conducted a survey of top-volume prescribers to gauge initial receptiveness and expected utilization once available, and results were highly supportive of TAF, its HIV treatment, as a next-gen replacement for Viread. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 16, 1:39 PM Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI -20.5%) gets slammed by cautious comments out of JPMorgan today, saying that investors are "growing increasingly skittish" ahead of INFI's pending presentation at June's ASCO cancer conference. The company is expected to release Phase 1 clinical safety and tolerability data for IPI-145, its experimental leukemia drug, and while the investment bank predicts "a good showing," it may not be enough to outshine Gilead (GILD -2.3%), Pharmacyclics (PCYC -2.5%) or Roche (RHHBY.OB -0.6%). 3 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 4:49 PM More on Gilead Sciences (GILD): Q1 misses on all counts, but investors appear to be focused more on the potential of its new HIV drug lines. Net earnings rose 63% Y/Y on increased sales for the newer additions to its HIV drug franchise, including Stribild, an HIV cocktail that was launched in late August. The drug contributed $92.1M to product sales in the latest quarter, while sales for Complera, which was approved last August, rose more than three-fold to $148.2M. Shares +0.5% AH. Comment! - Thursday, May 2, 4:16 PM Gilead Sciences (GILD): Q1 EPS of $0.48 misses by $0.02. Revenue of $2.53B (11% Y/Y) misses by $50M. (PR). Comment! [Healthcare, Breaking News, Earnings]
- Thursday, May 2, 2:24 PM The results of Gilead Sciences' (GILD +4.9%) Lonestar study are a significant positive data point for its hepatitis C program, says Leerink Swann's Howard Liang. He notes that the availability 8-week data, especially in more difficult to treat patients, could influence choice of agents. It's main competition at this point is AbbVie (ABBV), which currently doesn't have an 8-week treatment arm, so the shortened duration could be a significant advantage. More details should be available on its earnings call later today at 4:30 EST: (Webcast). Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 9:59 AM Gilead Sciences (GILD +5.3%) pops after saying it plans to initiate a Phase III trial to evaluate a combination of sofosbuvir and ledipasvir in patients with hepatitis C. Phase II results suggest "once-daily oral therapy with [the combo] may have the potential to cure most genotype 1 HCV infected patients with a remarkably short treatment duration," says Dr. Eric Lawitz, the study's principal investigator. Some have suggested a combination of sofosbuvir and BMY's daclatasvir is preferable, as both are active in genotype 3 HCV whereas ledipasvir may only be effective against genotype 1. - Saturday, April 27, 10:53 PM Combining Gilead's (GILD) sofosbuvir and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) daclatasvir cures 100% of hepatitis C patients in 12 weeks (including those who failed treatment with Vertex's (VRTX) Incivek and Merck's (MRK) Victrelis) and looks to be a better treatment option for those with genotype 3 than a combo of sofosbuvir and another GILD drug ledipasvir. The problem: "GILD very clearly wants to develop in-house," one clinician tells Bloomberg. (See also: ABBV's HCV treatment successful; VRTX teams with BMY on HCV trial) 5 Comments [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 23, 12:43 PM Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY +1.3%) oral three-drug combo for hepatitis C cured 94% of patients with 12 or 24 weeks of treatment in a Phase II trial. The company now hopes to start Phase III trials by late 2013. Bristol's positive results add to those of AbbVie (ABBV +2.9%), although Gilead (GILD -0.7%) appears to be ahead in the race to market with an oral hepatitis C drug, having already filed an FDA NDA for its sofosbuvir treatment. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 23, 7:41 AM AbbVie's (ABBV) five-drug, all oral treatment for hepatitis C wipes the virus out in 88% of patients after eight weeks the company says. Previous results showed the combination treatment rendered the virus undetectable in 99% of those receiving the treatment after 12 weeks. It's a race to market between Abbvie and Gilead Sciences (GILD) for an all oral treatment option capable of supplanting intravenous interferon without affecting cure rates or times. 3 Comments [Healthcare]
- Monday, April 22, 3:33 PM Maxim gives a bullish call on Gilead Sciences (GILD +1.8%) today, doubling is price target to $97 from $48. The firm says that recent estimates from private surveys put the Hepatitis C market in Japan much higher than previously thought, perhaps as high as 2M infections. Separately, Morgan Stanley also upped its target on higher HCV estimates as well, but to a much more modest $65 from $46. 5 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 16, 12:51 PM Gilead Sciences (GILD +2%) gets a lift today after Deutsche Bank reiterates a Buy on the shares and ups its price target from $48 to $69. Deutsche says its built out a monthly HCV market model that includes its new HIV drug TAF as well as Sofosbuvir. The firm projects that Sofosbuvir alone can bring in up to $3.7B in 2014, $8.4B in 2015, and $12.4B at its peak, respectively. Just last week GILD submitted a New Drug Application for Sofsbuvir, saying the drug will shorten treatment time for HCV infection and "reduce or eliminate" the need for injectable treatments. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, April 8, 5:00 PM Gilead Sciences (GILD) submits FDA New Drug Application for oral sofosbuvir, a hepatitis C treatment. The drug would shorten treatment time for chronic HCV infection to 12-16 weeks from 24-48 weeks and would also "reduce or eliminate" the need for injectable treatments. GILD says data from four Phase 3 studies supports its application. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, March 28, 4:24 PM Biotech ETFs close at or near all-time highs as heavyweights Amgen (AMGN +2.4%), Biogen (BIIB +5.2%), Celgene (CELG +2.4%) and Gilead Sciences (GILD +2.5%) make new 52-week highs going into the holiday weekend. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
