August gold futures peaked at $1,254.50 overnight, a record high. While recent volatility is hardly a sign of health for financial markets, Michael Snyder notes, it's great for gold investors. Aug. gold recently +0.3% to $1,244.60.

Gold (ETF: GLD) has not played the role of safe haven during the recent downturn, with gold futures recently -1.2% to $1,174 after striking $1,166 overnight. Measured by gold prices, the Dow peaked in the late '90s and has been in a well-defined down channel ever since.

Investor Intelligence's ETF Review says it's exiting its long position in SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD). "Momentum is now nearing a similar overbought level as per late November last year," firm writes. "On that occasion the market topped out and collapsed spectacularly." June gold futures recently +1.3% to $1,245.20.

Gold regains its luster, as George Soros emerges as a born-again gold bug and even pension funds begin to view the metal as a safe long-term investment. Soros owned 6.2M shares of SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) at the end of 4Q09, up from 2.5M in 3Q09. Soros, John Paulson and others also place big bets on Citigroup (C).

Market timer Charles Nenner says retail investors fleeing to the saftey of Treasurys (ETFs: TLT, TBT) are setting themselves up for big trouble, and predicts the recent bond rally will soon reverse drastically. Nenner believes rates will only rise "for the next 30 years," and suggests investors put their cash into Gold (GLD), U.S. dollars (UUP) and Goldman Sachs (GS).

Gold's pulling back again (futures currently -0.7%), and one reason isn't getting too much play: Maybe gold bugs got way too bullish to start the year - with a sample of recommended gold exposure jumping to 60.9% as of early this week, from 10.9% at the year's start. (ETF: GLD)

afr6262 $GLD I don't know how anyone can look at that chart and think it's going higher. Bugs need to see the writing on the wall.
