- Wednesday, May 22, 2:17 PM Up as high as $1,413 following Bernanke's (at the time) perceived dovish testimony this morning, gold (GLD -0.9%) reverses along with stocks. Markets make opinions, and now the focus on Bernanke is he's prepping the markets for tapering. The just-released FOMC minutes push down gold even further, now at $1,357/oz. 9 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 22, 10:09 AM Stocks pop higher (SPY +0.6%) as Bernanke's prepared remarks for Congress suggest an increase in QE is as likely as a "tapering." Gold (GLD +2.6%) and Silver (SLV +3.8%) get a charge, and bonds (TLT +0.5%) move higher. It's green across the board, but not participating is crude oil (USO -0.4%). Watch live here. 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Monday, May 20, 12:40 PM This just in. Precious metals (GLD +2.2%), (SLV +2.6%) are sharply higher on the session after a panicky Sunday evening plunge brought both to multi-year lows. Other than dollar weakness (UUP -0.5%) across the board, there's no news in particular - perhaps some satiated bears decided to cover and a trend took hold. 39 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, May 20, 7:07 AM Silver (SLV) plunged to its lowest level in nearly 3 years overnight before a bounce brought it to its current price of $21.60, -3.3%. As with gold, silver ETP holdings have dropped to the lowest levels this year, and speculative short positions are on the rise, according to CFTC data. Gold (GLD) took out its April lows earlier - dropping as low as $1,338. A bounce has brought the metal back to $1,351, -1%. 17 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 16, 7:18 AM Precious metals continue to tumble, with gold at $1,374 nearing the panicky lows (about $1,350) seen during April's liquidation. Any excuse will do in a bear market, and filings released yesterday containing data anywhere from 6 weeks to 5 months old showed continuing sales of gold ETPs by names such as Soros and BlackRock. GLD -1.3%, SLV -1.3% premarket. 9 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:16 AM Gold (GLD -2.1%), (IAU -2.2%) sinks back below $1,400 as the bounce since mid-April is officially over. At work here, suggests RBC Capital, is the strong stock market. To participate, foreign investors sell gold, buy dollars (UUP is up big in May), and call their stockbrokers. Commerzbank notes gold ETF outflows were another 6 tons yesterday, bringing the total since early April to 230 tons. Silver (SLV -3.1%) tags along. 34 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, May 10, 7:33 AM The stronger dollar has precious metals resuming their decline in force (or is the decline in precious metals strengthening the dollar), with gold (GLD) off 2.3% and silver (SLV) off 2.2%. Crude oil (USO) pulls back a bit from its recent big rally, -0.9% to $95.53. 106 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 9, 3:06 PM The dollar (UUP +1%) is soaring across the board (not just against the yen, where it's now spiked through ¥100 to ¥100.56). The greenback is threatening parity vs. the aussie (FXA -1.1%) for the first time since last summer, and the euro (FXE -1.1%), swissie (FXF -1.4%), loonie (FXC -0.5%), and pound (FXB -0.6%) are seeing sizable declines as well. Commodities? Red. Gold (GLD -1.1%), Silver (SLV -1.2%), Oil (USO -0.6%), Copper (JJC -0.8%). 5 Comments [Global & FX, Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 8, 3:06 PM With gold bears running rampant, J.P. Morgan’s new forecast for gold (GLD) to finish strong and trade near $1,700 by year-end is noteworthy. Among miners likely to benefit, the firm's favorites include Gold Fields (GFI +1.6%), which is least exposed to South Africa, and Sibanye Gold (SBGL +9.8%), which has lots of South Africa exposure but warrants an upgrade to Outperform from Neutral after plunging 38% YTD. 6 Comments [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 2, 3:09 PM Nearly everyone's a winner today as it's not just stocks lit up bright green. Oil (USO +3.3%), gold (GLD +0.5%), silver (SLV +0.7%), and corn (CORN +1.8%), are all flying. Even bonds (TLT), which tumbled on the big dip in jobless claims, have returned back to flat. Notably lower is natural gas (UNG -6.3%), tumbling on an unexpected add to inventories and as spring finally seems to arrive in the States. 3 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 1, 10:41 AM Commodities are lit up bright red as weak economic data (here and in China) is a good excuse to end the bounce of the last few sessions. Gold (GLD -1.8%), Silver (SLV -3.6%), WTI Crude (USO -2.6%). Copper (JJC -3.3%) moves to its lowest level in about 18 months at $3.08/lb. The metal hasn't had a 2-handle since the start of 2011. Broad commodity gauge (DBC -1.8%). 5 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 7:31 AM Precious metals continue their comeback tour, with the dollar (UUP) being lower across the board as good an excuse as any for buying this morning. GLD +1.1%, SLV +1.5% premarket. The greenback is particularly weak vs. the aussie (FXA), +0.6%. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, April 26, 12:06 PM A sharp reversal in commodities over the last hour has brought the entire sector into the red. Gold (GLD -0.6%) - looking like it was set to challenge $1,500/oz. an hour ago - is back to $1,452/oz. Silver (SLV -2.3%). WTI crude (USO -1.2%) falls to $92.46. Copper (JJC -1.9%) dives back to $3.18/lb. 13 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:03 AM The bounce in precious metals continues, gold (GLD) +1.6% and silver (SLV) +2.1% as buyers of the physical apparently used the rout to load up and - if anything - global central banks are leaning towards even easier monetary policy. A survey shows low bond yields are no longer doing it for central bankers and they're now looking at loading their balance sheets with equities. 18 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, April 22, 9:13 AM A massive wave of Asian buying of precious metals is emptying dealer shelves across the region. "I haven't seen this (kind of) gold rush for over 20 years," says the head of the HK Gold & Silver Exchange, adding that old-timers haven't seen anything like this for 50 years. GLD +2%, SLV +1.4%. 34 Comments [Commodities, On the Move, Top Stories]
- Monday, April 22, 8:27 AM Precious metals claw back another chunk of recent panicky losses, gold +2.5% to $1,430/oz., and silver +2.2% to $23.47. GLD +2.4%, SLV +1.9% premarket. 5 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
