Friday, May 24, 1:25 PM Japanese automakers (TM, HMC, NSANY.OB, MZDAY.PK, SZKMY.PK) could see the tide turning in China as consumer demand continues to pick up. Even with rhetoric and military exercises over the islands in the East China Sea continuing, new data shows 16K cars were shipped from Japan to China in April - 3X what was exported last Oct. when the flareup started - and Japanese brands now account for 16% of the market after dipping to as low as 7%. The big picture: Though the overall pie keeps getting larger, General Motors (GM -0.1%) and Ford (F +0.1%) would just as soon that the Japanese automakers keep their slice of the China auto market small. 2 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
Friday, May 24, 1:02 PM General Motors (GM -0.2%) has a nice little insurance policy to help it create shareholder value just in case the forecasts for strong U.S. auto sales don't pan out. The connectivity value of the Onstar service from the automaker makes the asset worth close to a whopping $8B to $10B, according to a bullish take from Citigroup. Though speculation on an Onstar spinoff has been going on for more than a decade, the high penetration rate of communication/security services also makes the stand-alone concept more enticing than ever. 2 Comments [Consumer]
Friday, May 24, 7:06 AM May is an important month for the automobile industry after the last three years saw a post-Q1 dip in sales. Industry forecasts are for May volume to top 1.4M units, which would mark a 9% Y/Y improvement. If May comes in strong, annual forecasts are likely to be raised as the threat of another late spring swoon is lifted. What to watch: A pickup in housing could help lift sales of full-sized pickups, while the average selling price for automakers (GM, F, FIATY.PK, NSANY.OB, TM, HMC, VLKAY.PK) should look strong as they take their foot off the promotional pedal. Thursday, May 23, 10:52 AM Electric vehicle roundup: 1) The tiny plug-in car market segment will have two entrants with lease options at $199 per month - the Chevrolet Spark (GM -1.3%) and the Nissan Leaf (NSANY.OB) - as the automakers appear willing to take some losses to keep the segment alive and kicking. 2) In China, an EV rental project in Beijing draws solid interest. Electric vehicles in the city are already popular for short commutes with over 2.7K electric taxis slated for service by the end of the year. 3) An Elon Musk interview on Bloomberg TV dissects the Tesal Motors (TSLA +1.8%) DOE loan payoff in great detail. Thursday, May 23, 6:56 AM General Motors (GM) says the Chevrolet Spark EV will have a starting price of $27,495 when it goes on sale in California and Oregon next month which will make it one of the budget leaders in the category. Wednesday, May 22, 5:46 PM On the repayment of its government loan, Tesla (TSLA) takes the opportunity in its press release to lob a few jibes at its competitors stating: "Following this payment, Tesla will be the only American car company to have fully repaid the government." Wednesday, May 22, 11:07 AM AIG remains at the top Goldman's list of hedge fund hotels (the 50 stocks appearing most frequently among hedge fund top 10 holdings). Google (GOOG) retains its #2 position. Apple (APPL) - in the top spot for 3 years until February - remains at #3. Goldman notes the basket has outperformed the S&P a bit this year and the top 20 has done better by more than 1000 basis points. We smell an ETF offering. Wednesday, May 22, 6:48 AM The Big Three (F, GM, FIATY.PK) automakers will cut back on summer shutdowns at factories with production goals being setting higher. GM won't shut down its factories at all while Ford and Chrysler will trim their shutdown schedule. Tuesday, May 21, 11:28 AM General Motors (GM -1.6%) says it will invest $44.5M in a Michigan factory which builds Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans as well as being slated to produce the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro. Monday, May 20, 1:06 PM LMC Automotive thinks demand for automobiles in China will return to a double-digit pace next year and stay stable for the four to five years. It's a common enough forecast in the industry with IHS Automotive going so far as to say there is "no chance" for a negative growth environment in China due to the less than 7% of the population that owns a car. Friday, May 17, 7:18 PM Shares of General Motors (GM +3.1%) eclipsed their $33 IPO price as investors speculate that the U.S. government may soon exit its ownership stake in the auto maker. The auto maker rose to $33.42 to close above its November 2010 IPO price for the first time since February 2011.
