- Monday, August 13, 2012, 12:48 PM Goldman Sachs increases EPS estimates on GameStop (GME -0.5%) in front of this week's earnings report. In making the call, analysts are reading through Activision Blizzard's (ATVI -1.5%) strong retail sales in Q2 to see a boost in GameStop. Despite the potential for an earnings beat on slowing sales, the spotlight on the company looking forward is on if it can boost revenue with digital distribution, streaming, and smartphone/tablet sales. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 1:59 PM GameStop (GME +2.6%) trades higher with a Janney analyst out touting the possibility of a leveraged buyout of the retailer. The story with the name remains pretty much the same: How to cope a video game market going from physical to digital? Next week's earnings report will tip off how well initiatives into digital distribution, streaming, and smartphone/tablet sales are progressing. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 7:00 AM GameStop's (GME) Game Informer is now the nation's third most widely circulated magazine after cruising past Better Homes & Gardens. Circulation rose 37% over the last year to reach 8.2M. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 9:13 AM Shares of hhgregg (HGG) continue their freefall, now down 29.1%, following the retailer's sharp cut in guidance. While RadioShack (RSH) and Best Buy (BBY) are the obvious sympathy selloff plays - Aaron's (AAN), Conn's (CONN), and even GameStop (GME) could also get swept into the fray on concerns about the electronics market. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 9:14 AM Shares of Gamestop (GME) fall 2.9% premarket after data from NPD reveals U.S. retail sales of physical video games fell a steep 28% in May to $517M. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 7:03 PM U.S. retail video game industry sales fell 28% Y/Y in May to $516.5M, per NPD. That's just a little better than April's 32% drop. Software sales fell a "mere" 16% thanks to the strong reception for Activision's (ATVI) Diablo III (previous), but hardware sales fell 39% as the big-3 consoles continue to show their age. NPD notes there have been 27% fewer game releases YTD than there were at the same point last year, and thinks sales could pick up in 2H as new titles arrive. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 11:33 AM Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) starts a pilot program to offer Xbox subscriptions at Best Buy (BBY +3.8%) stores and select GameStop (GME +0.2%) outlets at the same $99 pricing plan found from its own stores. The move appears to be a bigger commitment from Microsoft to adapt the subscription-based model where it will make up subsidized up-front hardware costs over the long haul. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 12:05 PM GameStop (GME +5.1%) runs up an impressive gain after Sony (SNE -3.2%) rejects an online-only game console for its next model. Sony say it plans on a 2013 release for the next-generation PlayStation. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 11:24 AM GameStop (GME +2.2%) says it will carry Android tablets at over 1.6K stores in the U.S. as part of a sweeping plan to become relevant outside the video gaming market with a large slate of tablet offerings including refurbished iPads. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 9:03 AM GameStop (GME) catches some flak over its plan to have customers who sign up for a subscription to Game Insider default to the digital format of the publication. The magazine has grown to claim one of the largest print circulations in the industry. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 8:31 AM GameStop (GME) CEO Paul Raines adds another 6,570 shares to his position in the company to take his stake up to 546,012 shares, according to a SEC filing. GME +1.0% premarket. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 12:02 PM Caris takes the hatchet to GameStop (GME +2.5%) with a downgrade to Neutral from Buy as analyst Scott Tilghman questions the company's ability to forecast its own earnings and frowns at the lack of pre-E3 announcements that should be generating excitement right about now. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 10:05 AM GameStop (GME) -8.1% following its miserable Q1 report and guidance. For Q2, the company predicts EPS of $0.10-$0.18, well below consensus of $0.26, and same-store sales contraction of 5%-11% due to a weak game release slate. Comment!
