Deutsche Bank says the run in GNC Holdings (GNC -4.4%) is over, and the recent selling by insiders - including massive selling by its CEO - confirms it. The firm calls it a "broken stock," and downgrades the health-supplement retailer to Hold. It also cuts its price target by 16% to $42.

GNC Holdings (GNC -2.3%) says it's closed its underwritten offering of 10M shares of its Class A common stock it announced last Thursday. In tandem, the company also notes it's completed the repurchase of 6M shares of its Class A common stock directly from Ares in a private, non-underwritten transaction.

GNC Holdings (GNC) announces a 10M share secondary offering of its Class A common stock. The shares to be sold are by Ares Corporate Opportunities Fund II and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board. The Company is neither issuing nor selling any shares in the offering. In addition, GNC says it's agreed to repurchase 6M shares of its Class A common stock directly from Ares immediately following the closing of the offering. Goldman is the sole underwriter. Shares +1.4% AH.

Deutsche Bank says it's time to take some profits off the table in Vitamin Shoppe (VSI -3.9%), cutting the shares from Buy to Hold off the recent spike as they see limited near-term catalysts. The firm notes that VSI is trading at a premium multiple to competitor GNC Holdings (GNC -2.9%) and the growing disparity between the two is not justified.

The confidence in controversial supplement DMAA expressed by execs at Vitamin Shoppe is helping to lift up shares of seller GNC Holdings (GNC +3.4%). GNC still has products with the supplement on store shelves, citing an independent toxicology lab report showing it's safe.

JPMorgan calls today's weakness in GNC Holdings (GNC -4.4%) a "buying opportunity" after the FDA warns about the dangers of stimulant DMAA. Analysts with the firm note that DMAA only makes up only a mid-single-digit percentage of GNC sales and the company plans to continue selling products with it despite the brouhaha.

The agency claims the ingredient increases the risk of higher blood pressure and could lead to possible cardiovascular events if overused.

GNC (GNC) says January and February same store sales increased by a percentage point to the mid-teens. This compares to an increase of approximately 6% for the first two months of fiscal 2011, and a 7.5% increase reported for the first quarter of fiscal 2011. The company also reafirms guidance in line with Street estimates. Shares +2% AH.
