- Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 11:11 AM Groupon's board is said to meet today to discuss Google's (GOOG +2.7%) takeover offer, but in the meantime it "cannot comment on speculation or rumors." Oppenheimer's Jason Helfstein believes Google is "uniquely positioned” to to leverage the 3,000-strong team at Groupon. But therein lies the problem, another analyst says: "Google is a technology company and Groupon is a people company." Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 10:43 AM The iPhone (AAPL) and BlackBerry (RIMM) are in a dead heat, with each owning about 27% of the U.S. smartphone market, says Nielsen, citing October data. About 22% of U.S. customers use Android (GOOG) handsets. Overall, 30% of all U.S. mobile subscribers own a smartphone. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 9:11 AM The much-whispered about Yahoo (YHOO) layoffs haven't started yet, as rumored, but will happen in 2 weeks, say sources. Yahoo employs 14K and has seen many restructurings in its history. Premarket, Yahoo is +1.3% to $16.03. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 8:51 AM Google's (GOOG) long-delayed eBook venture, Google Editions, launches this month, claim sources. Google will allow readers to purchase books from it or stores and access them via a browser. No need to buy a Kindle (AMZN) and be locked into Amazon content. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 8:20 AM Today, Groupon's board will discuss Google's (GOOG) reported $6B takeover bid, say sources. The board is considering other options too, including an IPO. Premarket: Google is +1% to $561.50. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 5:26 PM Motorola (MOT) finalizes its split into two units on Jan. 4. One company will focus on cell phones and cable gear for consumers, while the other will cater to the government and corporate markets. Motorola is -0.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 3:46 PM Nokia's (NOK -0.5%) N8 flagship smartphone is proving a modest hit, says Morgan Stanley. Despite some early stumbles, with growing app development, N8 will see Q4 sales of 2.5M, followed by 9M more units in 2011. This will mean 35% market share. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 2:34 PM Google's (GOOG) top-secret social networking project faces a major delay caused by internal disagreements, sources said. The launch has moved from 2010 to spring 2011, giving Facebook even more time to entrench. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 2:25 PM A Google (GOOG -3.6%) deal for Groupon “makes sense on several levels," Needham's Mark May says, helping it bridge opportunities in social networking, local search and mobile services. He pegs Groupon’s revenue at near $1B on a “run-rate” basis, much higher than some estimates. But at a reported $6B purchase price, “it could take a couple years to grow into the valuation.” Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 2:04 PM Google (GOOG) doesn't "substantially set prices" in its AdWords auctioning process, says Yahoo's (YHOO) chief economist. "Could they?" he asks. "Maybe. But they don't. Transparency would obviously help. They could be cheating in some sense and we would have a hard time knowing it because they're so opaque." Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 12:35 PM Neither potential fines nor loss of exclusive partnerships stemming from the European Union's antitrust probe of Google (GOOG -3.5%) prevented Susquehanna from giving it a Positive rating. Google's size invites official scrutiny, and “today’s announcement is not news to most investors.” Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 10:31 AM Google (GOOG) is -2.6% to $566.98 on the rumor that it may pay up to $6B for Groupon. The deal probably made more sense when the price was $2.5B. It may make no sense at any price, however, given Google is good at engineering, but doesn't get direct sales. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 9:54 AM The WikiLeaks disclosures that China may have been involved in hacking Google's (GOOG) and other U.S. computer systems and the lack of support from China on Iran may help the prospects of a bill coming to a vote in the Senate that would make it easier for the government to impose sanctions on Chinese exporters, Keefe Bruyette analyst Brian Gardner says. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 9:09 AM Ailing MySpace (NWS) could be on the auction block as News Corp ponders its options, says COO Chase Carey. Facebook has driven MySpace into a 'social entertainment' niche and its performance is an unacceptable drag on News Corp. However, just who'd buy so unpromising a business is an open question. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 7:47 AM Google (GOOG) is apparently nearing a deal to buy Groupon and could pay up to $6B, more than twice the whisper number, making this Google's largest acquisition ever and possibly a foolish one. Google is undoubtedly betting the fast-growing market of locally-tailored discounts will ultimately prove lucrative. (previously) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 7:29 AM The European Commission opens a formal antitrust probe into whether Google (GOOG -0.9%) has abused its position as the dominant player in online search, following complaints from other online search providers. 1 Comment [Tech]
