GOOG vs. ETF Alternatives

- Sunday, April 14, 3:46 AM Google (GOOG) looks like it will avoid heavy penalties after it offered a package of proposals to settle an EU antitrust investigation into the company's search business. Google's offer reportedly includes making "users clearly aware" when it promotes its own specialized sites in search results, and allowing Internet publishers to opt out of "vertical" sites such as Google News and Google+. The company's proposals will be legally binding for five years. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Saturday, April 13, 10:25 AM Priceline (PCLN) gets the Barron's treatment with a cover story arguing a profit squeeze is set to hit the highflier and its online travel site competitors, Expedia (EXPE) and Orbitz (OWW). One new source of competition is Google (GOOG), where search results now showcase prices, destination details, and even a "booking button." 5 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, April 12, 6:13 PM Intuit chairman/Apple board member Bill Campbell praises Google Glass (GOOG) ... and perhaps hints at a future iWatch (AAPL). Campbell calls Glass a "phenomenal breakthrough," and tells his audience to expect "a lot of things going on with the application of technology to really intimate things ... When you start to think about glasses or watches, they become as intimate as the cell phone." But while the tech world is embracing Glass, a privacy/security backlash is brewing. Vegas casinos have joined a growing list of businesses suggesting Glass will be banned on their premises, due to its built-in camera. 6 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 10:11 AM The DOJ signs off on Arris' (ARRS) $2.35B purchase of Motorola Home from Google (GOOG), paving the way for the acquisition to close around April 17. The deal stands to create a giant in the set-top/cable infrastructure space, and a major rival to Cisco's Scientific-Atlanta unit. (previous) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, April 11, 11:38 AM Google (GOOG) provides a formal settlement offer to the EU to end an antitrust probe that's proving harder to put to rest than the one launched by the FTC. E.C. antitrust chief Joaquin Almunia, who in February suggested an agreement might not happen until after summer vacations are over, states the EU wants "secure legally binding commitments" from Google, whose integration of Google-run services into search results has come under scrutiny. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 6:51 PM Google (GOOG) partners with top Silicon Valley VC firms Andreessen Horowitz and Kleiner Perkins to launch the Glass Collective, a program providing seed funding to startups developing hardware/software meant to work with Google Glass. "The thesis of Glass is profoundly transformational — to integrate connectivity and information directly into your field of vision and into your normal daily life," writes VC/Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, who compares Glass' potential impact to the web browser. The effort comes a month after Google showed off its first Glass apps. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 10, 2:23 PM A roadmap for Microsoft's (MSFT +2.2%) "Gemini" Office updates indicates iOS and Android apps won't arrive until fall 2014, ZDNet reports. While Microsoft takes its time in supporting rival platforms, Google (GOOG) has made the popular Quickoffice free on iOS/Android to Google Apps business customers. Separately, The Verge reports the next Xbox will be able to "take over a TV and set-top box" - Microsoft's pay-TV partnerships will allow for more functionality than Google TV - and that the next Kinect will be able to "detect multiple people simultaneously." - Tuesday, April 9, 7:11 PM Yahoo (YHOO) +1% AH after the WSJ reports the company has been talking with Apple (AAPL) about an expanded iOS relationship. The integration of content from News, Sports, and other Yahoo properties is said to be among the discussed ideas. Yahoo, whose data powers pre-installed iPhone finance and weather apps that don't feature ads, has been hungry to increase mobile engagement. Apple, meanwhile, wants to strengthen its Web offerings, which have taken a lot of heat (I, II). Also: Apple is reportedly reluctant to abandon its search deal with Google (GOOG) because it considers the quality of Google's results unmatched. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 12:40 PM Now it's completely official: Google (GOOG) announces Fiber is coming to Austin. The search giant says it hopes to begin connecting homes by mid-2014, and that pricing will be "roughly similar" to what's offered in Kansas City. Many "public institutions" will get 1Gbps service free of charge. Google Fiber chief Milo Medin: "At Google we’re obsessed with speed ... speed matters because it’s the source of innovation on the web." (live blog) (previous) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 11:56 AM Oppenheimer's Jason Helfstein cuts his 2013/2014 estimates for Facebook (FB -0.5%), citing concerns about seasonality and mobile ads. Helfstein estimates mobile made up 60% of Facebook use in February, up from 34% in March '12. His cuts come as IDC strikes a more positive tone on the subject. "Facebook’s meteoric rise in mobile display threatens Google’s (GOOG) dominance in that segment, on top of the fact that mobile search growth is slowing considerably ... Where in past years, ad networks ... received most of the spending on mobile display ads, now publishers control the segment." 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 9, 9:41 AM Google (GOOG) roundup: 1) WhatsApp denies being in buyout talks with Google. Much as it shot down a December report about Facebook. 2) Microsoft, Nokia, and Oracle have filed another antitrust complaint against Google (previous) with the E.C.: this time, they declare Google's insistence on having its apps/services pre-installed and given "prominent default placement" on its version of Android (the key to Google's Android monetization strategy) anti-competitive. 3) In a very Apple-like move, Google has removed 60K low-quality/spam-like apps from the Play store. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, April 8, 4:02 PM In case you needed further confirmation Google Fiber (GOOG) is heading to Austin, university coalition Gig.U has issued a PR congratulating Google for the move a day earlier than it was supposed to. The PR leak comes as Bernstein's Carlos Kirjner estimates Google's capex cost for passing 149K homes in Kansas City is ~$84M, and that it could cost $11B/year over 5 years to cover 15% of U.S. homes. However, he also estimates Google generates cash flow of $47/month and $64/month for its 1Gbps broadband and TV/broadband services, gradually making up for acquisition costs of $464 and $794. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Sunday, April 7, 6:11 PM Google (GOOG) is in talks to buy WhatsApp, which is looking for a ~$1B price tag, a source tells Digital Trends. Acquiring WhatsApp would give Google control of a mobile messaging giant claiming hundreds of millions of users, the top paid App Store app in over 100 countries, and deals with top international carriers, as well as a platform that has become a thorn in Facebook's (and perhaps Microsoft/Skype's) side. But it should be noted a December Facebook/WhatsApp rumor proved unfounded. Last month, Geek.com reported Google is looking to unify its messaging platforms. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Saturday, April 6, 1:10 PM "Google Fiber's Next Stop: Austin, Texas." Thus temporarily read a page on the Google Fiber site, before getting removed. Meanwhile, "multiple City of Austin sources" tell local ABC affiliate KVUE Google's (GOOG) Tuesday event will indeed be about a Fiber launch. It's safe to assume local ISPs Verizon and Time Warner Cable aren't pleased. 14 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 5:17 PM Is Google Fiber (GOOG) coming to Austin? Google and the City of Austin have sent out invites for a 12PM ET Tuesday event regarding "a very important announcement that will have a positive impact on Austinites." Sources tell VentureBeat the event could be about Fiber, but the site hedges by saying it could also be about a a Google campus or some other kind of partnership. Eric Schmidt has stated Google is looking to expand Fiber beyond its initial market of Kansas City; if one counts the city of Olathe, KS (25 miles from K.C.), Google has already begun. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 12:59 PM Google (GOOG -1.9%) roundup: 1) Google is selling back Frommer's travel guide business to its founder 8 months after acquiring Frommer's from John Wiley & Sons. Frommer's content has already been integrated with Google services. 2) Google is expanding the availability of its Compute Engine cloud infrastructure service, though it technically is still in preview, as well as cutting Compute Engine prices by 4% in an effort to keep up with Amazon Web Services. Mary Hunt: Google drops things it can't adequately monetize and its adsense for feeds never seemed to really take off. -
David Jackson: Mary, not sure the reason was monetization - GOOG has invested in some projects for years without revs. Seems it was more about usage.
