GOOG vs. ETF Alternatives

- Tuesday, April 23, 3:51 PM Google (GOOG +1.1%) has bought startup Wavii for a price above $30M, a "legitimate source" tells TechCrunch, while adding Apple was also bidding for the company. BI reported about a sub-$30M deal last week. If true, look for Google to integrate Wavii's natural language processing/summarization algorithms in mobile apps and sites that have use for content summaries that can be read on a smartphone without scrolling. The report comes a day after Yahoo revamped its flagship iOS app to leverage language-processing tech acquired via Summly. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 23, 5:45 AM Apple (AAPL) has won the latest round in the global IP wars, with the International Trade Commission ruling that the company did not breach a Motorola (GOOG) patent for a sensor to prevent a user's head from activating the touch screen. The patent was the last one left in a case that originally involved six patents. Two were terminated and three were found not to have been violated. Had Apple lost the case, the ITC could have banned the import of iPhone 4 devices into the U.S. 17 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, April 22, 5:02 PM A consumer launch for Google Glass (GOOG) is "probably a year-ish away," Eric Schmidt tells BBC Radio. For now, Glass is only available (at $1,500/unit) to select developers and winners of a recent contest. Regarding the growing privacy concerns caused by Glass' built-in camera (whose usage, unlike a smartphone's camera, isn't easy for third parties to detect), Schmidt admits Glass will require "some new social etiquette." "It's obviously not appropriate to wear these glasses in situations where recording is not correct." 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 22, 1:11 PM Google (GOOG -0.3%) roundup: 1) Code from a test page suggests Google Now will soon be added to the company's minimalist home page. Now, which relies on a user's location, personal data, and preferences to push useful/time-sensitive info, has been well-received on Android. An iOS version is said to be awaiting Apple's approval. 2) Eric Schmidt defends Google's U.K. tax payments in the face of growing public/government scrutiny, insisting Google fully complies with British law. 3) Germany's data protection agency has fined Google a whopping €145K for illegally recording data via its Street View cars. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, April 19, 5:24 PM More on Google: BI reports Google is close to buying Wavii, developer of a news summarization app that bears some resemblance to Yahoo-acquired Summly, for a price below $30M. Between Yahoo/Summly and LinkedIn's purchase of Pulse, M&A activity in the mobile reader app space has heated up lately. Google reportedly once tried to acquire Flipboard, the top dog in this market; it ended up launching Flipboard alternative Currents, which has seen modest success. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, April 19, 5:16 PM Google (GOOG +4.4%) refused to stop rallying today, closing within a hair's breadth of $800. In addition to favorable sell-side notes, investors may have taken heart in earnings call remarks about growth being "fairly stable" across regions in the face of macro challenges. Asia is said to be Google's fastest-growing region, and recession-hit Southern Europe "remains stable." Google also noted "Other" revenue rose 27% Q/Q and 150% Y/Y to $1B thanks to Google Play, and that YouTube viewing has risen by 50% over the last year. (Q1: I, II) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, April 19, 11:34 AM Google (GOOG +2.7%) rallies yet again following a mixed Q1 report, as the Street focuses on healthy paid click growth (boosted by mobile) and better-than-expected margins more than (moderate) ad price weakness (hurt by mobile) and Motorola's woes. "Google can grow its core search business in the low teens over the next few years at high incremental margins," and thereby keep margins stable even as it makes big investments, Morgan Stanley declares. Though still bullish, Needham notes EPS would've been roughly in-line if not for a tax credit. (CC transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 6:38 PM More than 1.5M ad campaigns have been upgraded to support Google's (GOOG) "enhanced" AdWords campaigns, sales chief Nikesh Arora states on the Q1 CC. By tying together PC and mobile purchases, enhanced campaigns are critical to boosting mobile ad rates. Larry Page reaffirms Google's commitment (previous) to "big bets" on moonshot projects such as Glass and Fiber, confirms Glass runs on Android, and suggests its price (currently $1.5K) will drop in time. Meanwhile, a U.S. district court has handed YouTube another victory over Viacom (VIA) in their long-running infringement dispute. GOOG +1.5% AH. (Q1: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, April 18, 4:29 PM More on Google: Q1 Revenue ex-TAC was $11.01B. TAC 25% of ad revenue, even with Q4. Google revenue (exc. Motorola) +22% Y/Y, even with Q4. Paid clicks +3% Q/Q and +20% Y/Y (+24% Y/Y in Q4). Cost-per-click (ad prices) -4% Q/Q and Y/Y after rising 2% Q/Q in Q4 (mobile a likely culprit). International 55% of sales (54% prior). Motorola Mobile revenue of $1.02B (-54% Y/Y), unit had a $179M operating loss. Capex of $1.2B. Free cash flow of $2.43B, below net income of $3.9B. Google headcount rose by 1.2K, Motorola Mobile headcount fell by almost as much. Opex 33% of revenue, same as Q4 and a year ago. GOOG now +0.2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 18, 4:14 PM Google (GOOG): Q1 EPS of $11.58 beats by $0.89. Revenue of $13.97B (+31% Y/Y) misses by $70M. Shares +3.2% AH. CC at 4:30PM ET (webcast). (PR) 10 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News, Top Stories]
- Thursday, April 18, 7:49 AM It's set to be a heavyweight late afternoon for the tech sector, with Google (GOOG), IBM (IBM) and Microsoft (MSFT) due to release quarterly results. Google's Q1 EPS is expected to have risen to $10.69 from $10.08 while revenue is seen surging 72.5% to $14.04B. IBM's Q1 EPS is estimated to have increased to $3.05 from $2.78 as revenue edged up 0.1% to $24.69B. Microsoft's FQ3 EPS is seen growing to $0.68 from $0.60 and its revenue 18.1% to $20.56B. Comment! - Wednesday, April 17, 3:56 PM Provo, UT (pop. 113K) is set to be the third location to get Google Fiber, Google (GOOG) and Provo's mayor announce. To enable the deployment, Google has agreed to buy local fiber network iProvo from the city (pending a council vote), and (as part of the deal) is promising to give Provo residents 5Mbps access for free for 7 years (save for a $30 activation charge), as well as free 1Gbps access to 25 public institutions. The news comes 8 days after Google's Austin Fiber announcement. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 17, 2:48 PM Equinix (EQIX) scores a deal with top independent video ad network BrightRoll to provide the data center infrastructure for BrightRoll's new VideoRTB+ real-time bidding platform (delivers targeted ads based on user activity). Equinix and BrightRoll will also jointly promote Equinix's Ad-IX platform for providing connections between ad exchanges and other online ad service providers. Bloomberg recently made note of the challenge presented by BrightRoll and its network of 6K+ sites/apps in the online video ad space to Google (GOOG), which still leads the market thanks to YouTube. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 17, 12:10 PM Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu slightly raises his Q1 estimates for Google (GOOG -1.7%) ahead of tomorrow's report; he cites comScore/RKG data that indicates improving ad prices, and positive supplier checks for Motorola and Nexus hardware sales. However, Wu, who reiterates a Neutral, still expects below-consensus Q1 EPS on account of "a mix shift towards lower margin areas" such as mobile ads, hardware sales, and Google Shopping ads. Stifel issued a cautious note about Google, whose shares remain up 10% YTD, on March 27. 1 Comment [Tech]
